أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِنُعْمَى بِنْتِ جَعْفَرٍ مَا لِي أَرَى أَجْسَامَ بَنِي جَعْفَرٍ أَنْضَاءَ أَبِهِمْ حَاجَةٌ؟ قَالَتْ لَا وَلَكِنَّهُمْ تُسْرِعُ إِلَيْهِمُ الْعَيْنُ أَفَأَرْقِيهِمْ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَعَرَضَتْ عَلَيْهِ كَلَامًا لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ فَقَالَ ارْقِيهِمْ
✧ that the Prophet ﷺ said to Nuʿma bt. Jaʿfar, "Why do I see the bodies of the sons of Jaʿfar emaciated? Do they have a need?" She said, "No, but the evil eye is quick to affect them. Should I perform ruqyah on them?" He said, "Yes." She presented some words to him that were acceptable, and he said, "Perform ruqyah on them with it."

صَلَّيْنَا الظُّهْرَ أَوِ الْعَصْرَ فِي مَسْجِدِ بَنِي حَارِثَةَ فَاسْتَقْبَلَنَا مَسْجِدَ إِيلِيَاءَ فَصَلَّيْنَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ جَاءَنَا مَنْ يُحَدِّثُنَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَدِ اسْتَقْبَلَ الْبَيْتَ الْحَرَامَ فَتَحَوَّلَ الرِّجَالُ مَكَانَ النِّسَاءِ وَالنِّسَاءُ مَكَانَ الرِّجَالِ فَصَلَّيْنَا السَّجْدَتَيْنِ الْبَاقِيَتَيْنِ وَنَحْنُ مُسْتَقْبِلُونَ الْبَيْتَ الْحَرَامَ فَحَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي حَارِثَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «أُولَئِكَ رِجَالٌ آمَنُوا بِالْغَيْبِ»
✧ We prayed Zuhr or ʿAsr in the mosque of Banu Harithah, and we faced the mosque of Jerusalem (Iliya), and we prayed two rakʿahs. Then someone came to inform us that the Messenger of God ﷺ had turned to face the Sacred House. So the men moved to the place of the women, and the women moved to the place of the men, and we prayed the remaining two prostrations while facing the Sacred House. A man from Banu Harithah told me that the Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Those are men who believed in the unseen.'

إِنِّي لَعِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ وَقَدْ ذَبَحَتْ شَاةً لَهَا فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي يَدَهِ عُصَيَّةٌ فَأَلْقَاهَا ثُمَّ هَوَى إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَصَلَّى فِيهِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ هَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَانْبَطَحَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَلْ مِنْ غَدَاءٍ؟ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ بِصَحْفَةٍ فِيهَا خُبْزُ شَعِيرٍ وَفِيهَا كِسْرَةٌ وَقَطْعِهٌ مِنَ الْكَرِشِ وَفِيهَا الذِّرَاعُ قَالَ فَأَخَذْتُ قِطْعَةً مِنَ الْكَرِشِ وَإِنَّهَا لَتَنْهَشُهَا إِذْ قَالَتْ ذَبَحْنَا شَاةً الْيَوْمَ فَمَا أَمْسَكْنَا غَيْرَ هَذَا قَالَتْ يَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا بَلْ كُلُّهَا أُمْسِكَتْ إِلَّا هَذَا»
✧ I was with ʿAʾishah, and she had slaughtered a sheep of hers. The Messenger of God ﷺ entered with a small staff in his hand, which he threw down, then he went to the mosque and prayed two rakʿahs in it, then he went to his bed and lay down on it. Then he said, "Is there any breakfast?" We brought him a large bowl containing barley bread, and in it was a piece, and a piece of the stomach, and in it was the foreleg. She said, "He took a piece of the stomach, and while he was chewing it, she said, 'We slaughtered a sheep today, and we did not keep anything except this.' She said, 'The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "No, rather all of it was kept except this."'"

«غَسَّلْنَا ابْنَةَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَغُسِّلَهَا بِالسِّدْرِ ثَلَاثًا وَإِلَّا فَخَمْسًا وَإِلَّا فَأَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ فَرَأَيْنَا أَنَّ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ سَبْعًا»
✧ "We washed the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ. He ordered us to wash her with lote-tree leaves three times, or if not, five times, or if not, more than that. We considered that more than that would be seven times."

«نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ وَتَفْضِيضِ الْأَقْدَاحِ فَكَلَّمَهُ النِّسَاءُ فِي لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ فَأَبَى عَلَيْنَا وَرَخَّصَ لَنَا فِي تَفْضِيضِ الْأَقْدَاحِ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from wearing gold and from silver-plating vessels. The women spoke to him about wearing gold, but he refused us, and he permitted us to silver-plate vessels.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ʿAlī on a military expedition. I saw him raising his hands and saying: "O Allah, do not cause me to die until You show me ʿAlī."

لَمَّا دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ جَمَعَ النِّسَاءَ فِي بَيْتٍ ثُمَّ بَعَثَ إِلَيْنَا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ فَقَامَ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنِّي رَسُولُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيْكُنَّ لِأُبَايِعَكُنَّ عَلَى أَنْ لَا تَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا تَزْنِينَ وَلَا تَقْتُلْنَ أَوْلَادَكُنَّ وَلَا تَأْتِينَ بِبُهْتَانٍ تَفْتَرِينَهُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيَكُنَّ وَأَرْجُلِكُنَّ وَلَا تَعْصِينَهُ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ قَالَتْ فَأَخْرَجْنَا أَيْدِينَا مِنْ خَارِجِ الْبَابِ وَأَخْرَجَ يَدَهُ فَبَايَعْنَاهُ قَالَتْ وَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَخْرُجَ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ الْعَوَاتِقَ وَالْحُيَّضَ وَنَهَانَا أَنَّ نَخْرُجَ فِي جَنَازَةٍ أَوْ نَأْتِيَ جُمُعَةً فَقُلْتُ لَهَا مَا لَا تَعْصِينَهُ قَالَتْ النَّوْحُ
✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ entered Madinah, he gathered the women in a house, then he sent ʿUmar b. al-Khattab to us. He stood at the door and greeted, then said, "I am the messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ to you, to take your pledge that you will not steal, commit adultery, kill your children, bring a slander you fabricate between your hands and feet, or disobey him in what is right." She said, "We brought out our hands from outside the door, and he brought out his hand, and we pledged to him." She said, "He ordered us to go out on the two ʿĪds, the unmarried women and the menstruating women, and he forbade us from going out for a funeral or attending Friday prayer." I said to her, "What is 'not disobey him'?" She said, "Wailing."

تُوُفِّيَتْ زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ اغْسِلُوهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ وَاغْسِلْنَهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ قَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ قَالَتْ جَعَلْنَا رَأْسَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ وَأَرْسَلْنَاهُنَّ مِنْ خَلْفِهَا قَالَتْ وَالْحَقْوُ إِزَارٌ صَغِيرٌ
✧ Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, died. He said, "Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that if you see fit, and wash her with water and lote-tree leaves, and put in the last washing some camphor. When you finish, inform me." When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said, "Wrap her in it as a shroud." She said, "We made her hair into three braids and placed them behind her." She said, "The waist-wrapper is a small lower garment."

بَايَعْنَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَدِمَتِ الْبَصْرَةَ تُبَادِرُ ابْنًا لَهَا فَلَمْ تُدْرِكُهُ» فَحَدَّثَتْنَا وَذَكَرَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ مَعْمَرٍ
✧ "We pledged to the Messenger of God ﷺ. She came to Basra seeking a son of hers, but she did not find him." She narrated to us, and he mentioned something like the hadith of Maʿmar.

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ قَالَا أنا مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةِ قَالَتْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَتُ ابْنَتُهُ فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَعْطَانَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ يَعْنِي إِزَارَهُ
✧ Al-Qaʿnabi narrated to us from Malik. And Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi narrated to us: ʿAbdullah b. ʿAbd al-Hakam narrated to us. And Bakr b. Sahl narrated to us: ʿAbdullah b. Yusuf narrated to us. They said: Malik b. Anas informed us, from Ayyub b. Abi Tamimah, from Muhammad b. Sirin, from Umm ʿAtiyyah al-Ansariyyah, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon us when his daughter died and said, "Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that if you see fit, with water and lote-tree leaves, and put in the last washing camphor or some camphor. When you finish, inform me." She said, "When we finished, we informed him, and he gave us his waist-wrapper and said, 'Wrap her in it as a shroud,' meaning his lower garment."

✧ A daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ died, so we gathered at her place and we entered upon her. The Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon us and said, “Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that if you see fit, with water and sidr, and add in the last washing camphor or some camphor. When you have finished, inform me.” When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said, “Use it as her innermost shroud.”

When you have finished, inform me.” When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said, “Use it as her innermost shroud.”

✧ One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ died. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Wash her with water and sidr, and wash her an odd number of times: three or five, and if you see fit to add more, then add more, and let that be an odd number. Put camphor or some camphor in the last washing.” Then he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said, “Use it as her innermost shroud.”

✧ A daughter of the Prophet ﷺ died. He said, “Wash her with water and sidr three times, or five times, or more than that if you see fit, and put some camphor in the last of them. When you have finished, inform me.” She said: We informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said, “Use it as her innermost shroud.” Ayyub said: And she said, “Wash her three, or five, or seven times, and make three plaits for her.”

تُوُفِّيَتِ ابْنَةُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ نُغَسِّلُهَا فَقَالَ اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَائْذَنَّنِي فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ فَقَالَ أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ «
✧ A daughter of the Prophet ﷺ died. He entered upon us while we were washing her and said, “Wash her three times or five times. When you have finished, inform me.” When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said, “Use it as her innermost shroud.”

✧ I went on several military expeditions with the Prophet ﷺ. We used to attend to the wounded and treat the injured. I said, “O Messenger of God, one of us goes out with the people on the day of Fitr and the day of Sacrifice.” She said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say, “Bring out the young women, the secluded maidens, and the menstruating women, so that they may witness the good and the supplication of the Muslims.” I said, “O Messenger of God, what if one of us does not have a garment?” He said, “Let her sister clothe her from her garment.”

✧ I heard this from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, regarding women who do not have a jilbab (outer garment): Do they witness the celebration? She said: Yes, by my father. Whenever she spoke about the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, she would say: By my father, I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ, saying, "Allow the unmarried women and those who menstruate to attend the Eid prayer and the supplication of the Muslims, but let them stay away from the prayer area."

✧ We gave allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He recited to us that we should not associate anything with God, and he forbade us from wailing. A woman among us withdrew her hand and said, 'O Messenger of God, so-and-so helped me (in mourning), and I want to repay her.' He said nothing to her. She went away, then came back and said, 'No woman among us fulfilled it except Umm Sulaym, Umm al-'Ala', the daughter of Abu Sabrah, and the wife of Mu'adh.'

بَايَعْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَكَانَ فِيمَا أَمَرَنَا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ أَنْ لَا نَنُوحَ فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ آلَ فُلَانٍ أَسْعَدَتْنِي فَلَنْ أُبَايِعَكَ حَتَّى أَسْعِدَهُنَّ قَالَتْ فَأَسْعَدْتُهُنَّ ثُمَّ بَايَعَتْهُ قَالَتْ فَلَمْ تَفِ مِنَّا امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرِي وَأُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ
✧ We gave allegiance to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and among what he commanded us of good was that we should not wail. A woman said, 'O Messenger of God, the family of so-and-so helped me (in mourning), so I will not give you allegiance until I help them.' She said, 'So I helped them, then I gave him allegiance.' She said, 'No woman among us fulfilled it except me and Umm Sulaym.'

✧ One of the daughters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ came to us and said: “Wash her with lote leaves, and wash her an odd number of times — three, or five, or more than that if you see fit — and put camphor in the last washing. When you finish, inform me.” She said: “When we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper to us and said: ‘Shroud her in it.’” She said: “We braided her hair into three braids, her forelock and two side braids, then we placed them behind her.”

وَقَالَ لَهَا مَنْ هَذَا الَّذِي كَانَ عِنْدَكِ؟ قَالَتْ مَا كَانَ عِنْدِي أَحَدٌ وَمَا انْتَبَهْتُ حَتَّى أَنْبَهْتَنِي قَالَ الْحَقِي بِأَهْلِكِ وَتَكَلَّمَ فِيهَا النَّاسُ فَقَالَ لَهَا أَبُوهَا يَا بُنَيَّةُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ أَكْثَرُوا فِيكِ؛ فَنَبِّئِينِي نَبَأَكِ فَإِنْ يَكُنِ الرَّجُلُ عَلَيْكِ صَادِقًا دَسَسْتَ إِلَيْهِ مَنْ يَقْتُلُهُ فتنقطعَ عَنْكِ الْقَالَةُ وَإِنْ كَانَ كَاذِبًا حَاكَمْتَهُ إِلَى بَعْضِ كُهَّانِ الْيَمَنِ فَحَلَفْتُ لَهُ بِمَا كَانُوا يَحْلِفُونَ بِهِ إِنَّهُ لَكَاذِبٌ عَلَيْهَا فَقَالَ لِلْفَاكِهِ يَا هَذَا إِنَّكَ قَدْ رَمَيْتَ ابْنَتِي بِأَمْرٍ عَظِيمٍ فَحَاكَمَنِي إِلَى بَعْضِ كُهَّانِ الْيَمَنِ فَخَرَجَ عُتْبَةُ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ وَخَرَجَ الْفَاكِهُ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ مِنْ بَنِي مَخْزُومٍ وَخَرَجَتْ مَعَهُمْ هِنْدٌ وَنِسْوَةٌ مَعَهَا فَلَمَّا شَارَفُوا الْبِلَادَ وَقَالُوا نَرُدُّ عَلَى الْكَاهِنِ تَنَكَّرَ حَالُ هِنْدَ وَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهَا فَقَالَ لَهَا أَبُوهَا إِنِّي قَدْ أَرَى مَا بِكِ مِنْ تَنَكُّرِ الْحَالِ وَمَا ذَاكَ إِلَّا لِمَكْرُوهٍ عِنْدَكِ أَفَلَا كَانَ هَذَا مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ النَّاسُ مَسِيرَنَا؟ فَقَالَتْ لَا وَاللهِ يَا أَبَتَاهُ مَا ذَاكَ لِمَكْرُوهٍ وَلَكِنِّي أَعْرِفُ أَنَّكُمْ تَأْتُونَ بَشَرًا يُخْطِئُ وَيُصِيبُ وَلَا آمَنُ أَنْ يُسْمِيَنِي بِسِمَةٍ تَكُونُ عَلَيَّ سُبَّةً فِي الْعَرَبِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَخْتَبِرُهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ فِي أَمْرَكِ فَصَفَّرَ بِفَرَسِهِ حَتَّى أَدْلَى ثُمَّ أَخَذَ حَبَّةً مِنْ بُرٍّ فَأَدْخَلَهَا فِي إِحْلِيلِهِ وَأَوْكَأَ عَلَيْهَا بِسَيْرٍ فَلَمَّا صَبَحُوا أَكْرَمُهُمْ وَنَحَرَ لَهُمْ فَلَمَّا قَعَدُوا قَالَ لَهُ عُتْبَةُ إِنَّا قَدْ جِئْنَاكَ فِي أَمْرٍ وَإِنِّي قَدِ اخْتَبَأْتُ لَكَ خَبَّأً اخْتَبِرُكَ بِهِ فَانْظُرْ مَا هُوَ؟ قَالَ نَمِرَةٌ فِي كمرةٍ قَالَ أُرِيدُ أَبْيَنَ مِنْ هَذَا قَالَ حَبَّةٌ مِنْ بُرٍّ فِي إِحْلِيلِ مَهْرٍ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ انْظُرْ فِي أَمْرِ هَؤُلَاءِ النِّسْوَةِ فَجَعَلَ يَدْنُو مِنْ إِحْدَاهُنَّ فَيَضْرِبُ كَتِفَهَا وَيَقُولُ انْهَضِي حَتَّى دَنَا مِنْ هِنْدَ فَضَرَبَ كَتِفَهَا وَقَالَ قَوْمِي غَيْرَ وَحْشَاءَ وَلَا زَانِيَةً وَلْتَلِدْنَ غُلَامًا يُقَالُ لَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ فَنَهَضَ لَهَا الْفَاكِهُ فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِهَا فَنَتَرَتْ يَدَهَا مِنْ يَدِهِ وَقَالَتْ إِلَيْكَ فَوَاللهِ لَأَحْرُصَنَّ عَلَى أَنْ يَكُونَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ غَيْرِكَ فَتَزَوَّجَهَا أَبُو سُفْيَانَ فَجَاءَتْ بِمُعَاوِيَةَ
✧ He said to her: "Who was this person with you?" She said: "There was no one with me, and I did not wake up until you woke me." He said: "Join your family." People talked about her. Her father said to her: "My little daughter, people have spoken a lot about you. So tell me your story. If the man has spoken truthfully against you, you sent someone to kill him, so the slander would be cut off from you. But if he was lying, you would have taken him to one of the soothsayers of Yemen for judgment." She swore to him by what they used to swear by that he was indeed lying against her. Then he said to al-Fākih: "O man, you have accused my daughter of a grave matter. So take me to one of the soothsayers of Yemen for judgment." So ʿUtbah went out with a group from Banū ʿAbd Manāf, and al-Fākih went out with a group from Banū Makhzūm, and Hind went out with them along with some women. When they approached the land, and they said: "We will go to the soothsayer," Hind's condition changed and her face changed. Her father said to her: "I see what is upon you of changed condition, and that is only because of something hateful to you. Would that this had been before people witnessed our journey!" She said: "No, by Allah, my father, it is not because of something hateful. But I know that you are coming to a human being who errs and is right, and I do not feel safe that he will name me with a mark that will be a disgrace upon me among the Arabs." He said: "I will test him before he looks into your affair." He whistled to his horse until it lowered [its head], then he took a grain of wheat and inserted it into its urethra and tied a strap over it. When they arrived in the morning, [the soothsayer] honored them and slaughtered for them. When they sat down, ʿUtbah said to him: "We have come to you about a matter, and I have hidden something for you to test you with. So look at what it is." He said: "A she-camel in a...?" He said: "I want something clearer than this." He said: "A grain of wheat in the urethra of a horse." He said: "You are right. Look into the affair of these women." He began to approach one of them, strike her shoulder, and say: "Rise," until he approached Hind, struck her shoulder, and said: "Rise, you are neither unchaste nor an adulteress, and you will give birth to a boy who will be called Muʿāwiyah." Then al-Fākih rose to her and took her hand, but she pulled her hand away from his and said: "Away with you! By Allah, I will be keen for that [child] to be from other than you." Then Abū Sufyān married her, and she gave birth to Muʿāwiyah.

✧ Hind came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, there was no household on the face of the earth more beloved to me to be humiliated by Allah than your household, and today there is no household on the face of the earth more beloved to me to be honored by Allah than your household." The Prophet ﷺ said: "And also, by the One in Whose hand is my soul." Maʿmar said: meaning they will surely increase. Then she said: "O Messenger of Allah, Abū Sufyān is a stingy man. Is there any sin upon me if I take from his wealth to support his dependents without his permission?" The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no harm upon you to spend on them with what is reasonable."

Then she said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a stingy man. Is it permissible for me to spend on his family from his wealth without his permission?" The Prophet said, "There is no harm if you spend on them according to what is reasonable."

ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ جَاءَتْ هِنْدٌ أُمُّ مُعَاوِيَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ أَبَا سُفْيَانَ رَجُلٌ شَحِيحٌ وَلَا يُعْطِينِي مَا يَكْفِينِي وَوَلَدِي إِلَّا مَا أَخَذْتُ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ لَا يَعْلَمُ فَهَلْ عَلَيَّ فِي ذَلِكَ حَرَجٌ؟ فَقَالَ لَهَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «خُذِي مَا يَكْفِيكِ وَبَنِيكِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ»
✧ ʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us: My father narrated to me from Hishām b. ʿUrwah from his father from ʿĀʾishah, who said: Hind, the mother of Muʿāwiyah, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "Abū Sufyān is a miserly man and he does not give me what suffices me and my child except what I take from him without his knowledge. Is there any sin upon me in that?" The Prophet ﷺ said to her: "Take what suffices you and your children, with what is reasonable."
