   أَنَّ رِجَالًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حِينَ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَزِعُوا عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَخَذَ بَعْضَهُمُ الْوَسْوَسَةُ، قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: وَكُنْتُ مِنْهُمْ فَبَيْنَا أَنَا جَالِسٌ فِي أُطُمٍ مِنَ الْآطَامِ مَرَّ عَلَيَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ، فَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ أَشْعُرْ بِهِ، فَانْطَلَقَ عُمَرُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ - رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِمَا - فَقَالَ: أَلَا أُعَجِّبُكَ، مَرَرْتُ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ، فَأَقْبَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ حَتَّى أَتَيَا فَسَلَّمَا جَمِيعًا، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: جَاءَنِي أَخُوكَ عُمَرُ فَزَعَمَ أَنَّهُ مَرَّ عَلَيْكَ فَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ تَرُدَّ السَّلَامَ، قَالَ: عُثْمَانُ: فَقُلْتُ: وَاللهِ مَا شَعَرْتُ بِكَ حَيْثُ مَرَرْتَ، وَلَا سَلَّمْتَ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: صَدَقَ عُثْمَانُ، وَلَقَدْ شَغَلَكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ أَمْرٌ، فَقَالَ: أَجَلْ، قَالَ: مَا هُوَ ؟ قُلْتُ: قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ نَجَاةِ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِ: قَدْ سَأَلْتُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: فَقُلْتُ: بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي

   ✧ Some men among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, when the Messenger of God ﷺ died, grieved over him so intensely that some of them became afflicted with whispering (waswasa). 'Uthman said: 'I was among them. While I was sitting in one of the forts, 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ passed by me and greeted me, but I did not notice him. 'Umar went on until he entered upon Abu Bakr—may God have mercy on them both—and said: 'Shall I tell you something astonishing? I passed by 'Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting.' So Abu Bakr and 'Umar came together until they arrived and both greeted me. Abu Bakr said: 'Your brother 'Umar came to me and claimed that he passed by you and greeted you, but you did not return the greeting.' 'Uthman said: 'I said: By God, I did not notice you when you passed or greeted.' Abu Bakr said: ''Uthman has spoken the truth; some matter must have preoccupied you from that.' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'What is it?' I said: 'The Messenger of God ﷺ was taken before I could ask him about the salvation of this matter.' Abu Bakr, may God have mercy on him, said: 'I asked the Messenger of God ﷺ about that.' 'Uthman said: 'I said: May my father and mother be your ransom.'

   ✧ 'Abd al-Salam b. Harb narrated to us, from 'Abdullah b. Bishr, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id b. al-Musayyib, from 'Uthman b. 'Affan, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ, a narration similar to this hadith. Abu Bakr said: 'I do not think except that 'Abdullah b. Bishr is the one who erred, and the hadith is the hadith of Ma'mar and Salih b. Kaysan along with those who concurred with them. Muhammad b. 'Umar al-Waqidi narrated it from Ibn Akhi al-Zuhri, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id b. al-Musayyib, from 'Abdullah b. 'Amr, from 'Uthman, from Abu Bakr. And Abu Bakr said: This hadith is among those in which Muhammad b. 'Umar was not followed in his narration.    ✧ The Messenger ﷺ said, then he mentioned something similar. Abu Bakr said: 'Sa'd b. Sa'id and 'Abdullah b. Sa'id—their hadiths in this have some weakness. Yet a group has narrated from both of them and from each of them individually, and we only write from their hadiths what has also been narrated from the Messenger of God—may peace and blessings be upon him—albeit through a different chain. This statement has also been narrated by Asma' b. al-Hakam from 'Ali from Abu Bakr.'

    ✧ Sharik narrated to us, from 'Uthman b. al-Mughirah, from 'Ali b. Rabi'ah, from Asma' b. al-Hakam, from 'Ali, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ, with a similar hadith to that of Shu'bah. Abu Bakr said: 'This statement—we do not know that it is narrated from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ, except through these two routes. And the saying of 'Ali: "I was a man who, when I heard a hadith from the Messenger of God ﷺ..."—this is only narrated by Asma' b. al-Hakam, and Asma' is unknown; he did not narrate anything other than this hadith, and no one narrated from him except 'Ali b. Rabi'ah. And the statement itself is not narrated from 'Ali except through this route.'

    لَمَّا قُبِضَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ خَاصَمَ الْعَبَّاسُ عَلِيًّا فِي أَشْيَاءَ تَرَكَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَاخْتَصَمَا إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ فَسَأَلَهُ أَنْ يَقْسِمَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَأَبَى وَقَالَ: شَيْئًا تَرَكَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا كُنْتُ لِأُحْدِثَ فِيهِ

    ✧ When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, al-'Abbas disputed with 'Ali concerning things that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had left behind. They brought their dispute to Abu Bakr ؓ and asked him to divide it between them, but he refused and said: 'Something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left behind — I would not introduce anything new regarding it.'

    لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةُ أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ جَالِسٌ وَمَعَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: لَوْ تَنَحَّيْتَ لَا تُؤْذِيكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّهُ سَيُحَالُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهَا، فَأَقْبَلَتْ حَتَّى وَقَفَتْ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَقَالَتْ: يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ: هَجَانَا صَاحِبُكَ ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: لَا وَرَبِّ هَذِهِ الْبَنِيَّةِ مَا يَنْطِقُ بِالشِّعْرِ وَلَا يَتَفَوَّهُ بِهِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّكَ لَمُصَدَّقٌ فَلَمَّا وَلَّتْ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِ: مَا رَأَتْكَ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا، مَا زَالَ مَلَكٌ يَسْتُرُنِي حَتَّى وَلَّتْ

    ✧ When "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab" was revealed, the wife of Abu Lahab came while the Messenger of Allah was sitting, and with him was Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr said to him, 'If only you would move aside so she does not harm you, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'A barrier will be placed between me and her.' She came forward until she stood before Abu Bakr and said, 'O Abu Bakr, has your companion satirized us?' Abu Bakr said, 'No, by the Lord of this building, he does not utter poetry or speak it.' She said, 'You are indeed truthful.' When she turned away, Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, said, 'Did she see you?' He said, 'No, an angel kept shielding me until she left.'

    لَمَّا أَخْرَجَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَنْ مَكَّةَ، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ: أَخْرَجُوا نَبِيَّهُمْ، سَيَهْلِكُونَ، فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا

    ✧ When the polytheists expelled the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah, Abu Bakr ؓ said, 'They have expelled their Prophet; they will surely perish.' Then this verse was revealed: 'Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged.'

    كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ وَلا يَجِدْ لَهُ مِنْ دُونِ اللهِ وَلِيًّا وَلا نَصِيرًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ أَلَا أُقْرِئُكَ آيَةً أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ " ؟ قُلْتُ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: فَأَقْرَأَنِيهَا، فَلَا أَعْلَمُ إِلَّا أَنِّي وَجَدْتُ انْقِصَامًا فِي ظَهْرِي فَتَمَطَّأْتُ لَهَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " مَا لَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ " ؟ قُلْتُ: بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَأَيُّنَا لَمْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا وَإِنَّا لَمُجَازَوْنَ بِمَا عَمِلْنَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَأَصْحَابُكَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَتُجْزَوْنَ بِذَلِكَ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى تَلْقَوْنَ اللهَ وَلَيْسَ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبٌ، وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُونَ فَيُجْمَعُ ذَلِكَ لَهُمْ حَتَّى يُجْزَوْنَ بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

    ✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when this verse was revealed: 'Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it, and he will not find for himself besides Allah any protector or helper.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O Abu Bakr, shall I not recite to you a verse that has been revealed to me?' I said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'So he recited it to me.' I do not know except that I felt a break in my back, so I stretched for it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What is the matter with you, O Abu Bakr?' I said, 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah. Which of us has not done evil? Indeed we will be recompensed for what we have done.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'As for you, O Abu Bakr, and your companions, the believers, you will be recompensed for that in this world until you meet Allah, and you will have no sins. As for the others, that will be accumulated for them until they are recompensed for it on the Day of Resurrection.'

    ✧ I heard Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ؓ on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say — and he wept when he mentioned the Messenger of Allah, then it passed from him, then he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say in this heat, or in heat like this: "Ask Allah for pardon, well-being, and certainty in this world and the Hereafter."

    ✧ That Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, when he was appointed caliph, sent him to Bahrain and wrote for him this document: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is the obligatory charity that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ imposed on the Muslims, which Allah commanded His Messenger. Whoever among the believers is asked for it in its proper manner, let him give it. Whoever is asked above it, let him not give it. For twenty-four camels or less: for every five, a sheep. When they reach twenty-five up to thirty-five, there is a yearling female camel (bint makhad). If there is no yearling female camel, then a two-year-old male camel (ibn labun). When they reach thirty-six up to forty-five, there is a two-year-old female camel (bint labun). When they reach forty-six up to sixty, there is a three-year-old female camel (hiqqah) up to sixty. When they reach sixty-one, there is a four-year-old female camel (jadha'ah) up to seventy-five. When they reach seventy-six, there are two two-year-old female camels (bint labun) up to ninety. When they reach ninety-one up to one hundred and twenty, there are two three-year-old female camels (hiqqah), able to be mounted by a male camel. When they exceed one hundred and twenty, in every forty there is a two-year-old female camel, and in every fifty there is a three-year-old female camel. If someone's charity reaches a jadha'ah and he does not have a jadha'ah, but he has a hiqqah, it is accepted from him and he gives along with it two sheep if it is easy for him, or twenty dirhams. If someone's charity reaches a hiqqah and he does not have a hiqqah, but he has a jadha'ah, it is accepted from him as a jadha'ah, and the collector gives him twenty dirhams or two sheep. If someone's charity reaches a hiqqah and he has nothing but a bint labun, it is accepted from him, and he gives the collector two sheep or twenty dirhams. If someone's charity reaches a bint labun and he has a hiqqah, the hiqqah is accepted from him, and the collector gives him two sheep or twenty dirhams. He said: There is no charity on grazing sheep until they reach forty, nor on their increase until they reach one hundred and twenty. When they increase by one over one hundred and twenty, there are two sheep up to two hundred. When they exceed two hundred, there are three sheep up to three hundred. When they exceed three hundred, in every hundred sheep there is one sheep.

    كُنَّا مَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ إِذِ اسْتَسْقَى فَأَتَى بِمَاءٍ وَعَسَلٍ، فَلَمَّا وَضَعَهُ عَلَى يَدِهِ بَكَى وَانْتَحَبَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا نَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قُلْنَا: يَا خَلِيفَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى هَذَا الْبُكَاءِ ؟ قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا أَنَا مَعُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَدْفَعُ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ، شَيْئًا وَلَا أَرَى شَيْئًا فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا الَّذِي أَرَاكَ تَدْفَعُ عَنْ نَفْسِكِ وَلَا أَرَى شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ: الدُّنْيَا تَطَوَّلَتْ لِي، فَقُلْتُ: إِلَيْكِ عَنِّي، فَقَالَتْ لِي: أَمَا إِنَّكَ لَسْتَ بِمُدْرِكِي، قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: فَشَقَّ عَلَيَّ وَخَشِيتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ قَدْ خَالَفْتُ أَمْرَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَحِقَتْنِي الدُّنْيَا

    ✧ We were with Abu Bakr ؓ when he asked for water. He was brought water and honey. When he put it to his hand, he wept and sobbed until we thought something was wrong with him, but we did not ask him about anything. When he finished, we said: O successor of the Messenger of Allah, what made you weep? He said: While I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I saw him pushing something away from himself, but I saw nothing. I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is it that I see you pushing away from yourself, but I see nothing? He said: The world was extended to me. I said: Away from me! It said to me: Indeed, you will not catch me. Abu Bakr said: It distressed me and I feared that I had contradicted the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the world had caught up with me.

Abi 'Arubah did not hear from Abu al-Tayyah. They think he only heard it from Ibn Shawdhab, or it reached him from him and he narrated it from Abu al-Tayyah.     لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا حَتَّى إِذَا دَنَا مِنَّا وَكَانَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُ قِيدُ رُمْحَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٍ، قُلْتُ هَذَا الطَّلَبُ قَدْ لَحِقَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: وَبَكَيْتُ، فَقَالَ: لِمَ تَبْكِي ؟ قُلْتُ: أَمَا وَاللهِ مَا عَلَى نَفْسِي أَبْكِي، وَلَكِنْ أَبْكِي عَلَيْكَ فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اكْفِنَاهُ فَسَاخَتْ فَرَسُهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَى بَطْنِهَا وَوَثَبَ عَنْهَا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ، وَنَادَى يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ هَذَا أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ مِنْكَ أَوْ عَمَلُكَ، فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يُنَجِّيَنِي مِمَّا أَنَا فِيهُ فَوَاللهِ لَأُعَمِّيَنَّ عَلَى مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنَ الطَّلَبِ، وَخُذْ سَهْمًا مِنِّي فَإِنَّكَ سَتَمُرُّ عَلَى إِبِلٍ لِي بِمَكَانِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَخُذْ مِنْهَا مَا شِئْتَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَا حَاجَةَ لَنَا فِيهَا فَدَعَا لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَانْطَلَقَ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَأَنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَتَلَقَّاهُ النَّاسُ عَلَى الطُّرُقِ: النِّسَاءُ وَالْخَدَمُ فِي الطُّرُقِ يَقُولُونَ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، جَاءَ مُحَمَّدٌ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ، وَتَنَازَعَهُ الْقَوْمُ أَيُّهُمْ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ: نَنْزِلُ اللَّيْلَةَ عَلَى بَنِي النَّجَّارِ أَخْوَالِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ لِنُكْرِمَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَ فَغَدَا حَيْثُ أُمِرَ، قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ: وَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ فِي عِشْرِينَ رَاكِبًا فَقُلْنَا: مَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَ: هُوَ عَلَى أَثَرِي، ثُمَّ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَمَا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى قَرَأْتُ سُوَرًا مِنَ الْمُفَصَّلِ.

    ✧ Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us. Until when he drew near to us, and between us and him was the distance of two or three spears, I said, "This is the pursuer who has caught up with us, O Messenger of Allah." He said: And I wept, so he said, "Why do you weep?" I said, "By Allah, I do not weep for myself, but I weep for you." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated against him: "Suffice us against him." Then his horse sank into the ground up to its belly, and he leapt from it to the ground and called out, "O Muhammad, I think this is from you or your doing, so supplicate to Allah to save me from what I am in. By Allah, I will blind those behind me of the pursuers, and take an arrow from me, for you will pass by camels of mine at such-and-such a place, so take from them whatever you wish." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "We have no need of them." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated for him, and he departed and returned to his companions. And I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we reached Madinah, and the people met him on the roads: women and servants in the roads saying, "Allah is greatest! Muhammad has come, the Messenger of Allah has come." And the people disputed as to which of them he would stay with, so the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "We will stay tonight with Banu al-Najjar, the maternal uncles of 'Abd al-Muttalib, to honor them by that." Then morning came and he went where he was commanded. Al-Bara' said: And the first to come to us was 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ with twenty riders, so we said, "What has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ done?" He said, "He is on my track." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come until I had recited some surahs from the Mufassal.

    ✧ Fatimah, may Allah have mercy on her, sent to Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him: "O successor of the Messenger of Allah, did you inherit the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or his family?" He said, "Rather his family." She said, "Then what about the share of the Prophet ﷺ?" He said, "I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'When Allah feeds a prophet a grant, then takes his soul, it belongs to the one who stands after him.' So I saw fit to return it to the Muslims." She said, "You and the Messenger of Allah know best."

If you had a debt like Mount Uhud, then you recited it, Allah would settle it for you.' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, reliever of distress, remover of grief, answerer of the call of the distressed, Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, You are my Merciful, so have mercy on me with a mercy that suffices me from all besides You.'

    لَمَّا انْصَرَفَ النَّاسُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ كُنْتُ أَوَّلَ مَنْ فَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ يُقَاتِلُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَقُلْتُ: كُنْ طَلْحَةَ قَالَ: ثُمَّ نَظَرْتُ فَإِذَا إِنْسَانٌ خَلْفِي كَأَنَّهُ طَائِرٌ فَلَمْ أَشْعُرْ أَنْ أَدْرَكَنِي فَإِذَا هُوَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاحِ، وَإِذَا طَلْحَةُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ صَرِيعًا، فَقَالَ: دُونَكُمْ أَخُوكُمْ، فَقَدْ أَوْجَبَ فَتَرَكْنَاهُ وَأَقْبَلْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَإِذَا قَدْ أَصَابَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فِي وَجْهِهِ سَهْمَانِ، فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَنْزِعَهُمَا، فَمَا زَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ يَسْأَلُنِي وَيَطْلُبُ إِلَيَّ حَتَّى تَرَكْتُهُ فَنَزَعَ أَحَدَ السَّهْمَيْنِ وَأَزَمَّ عَلَيْهِ بِأَسْنَانِهِ فَقَلَعَهُ، وَابْتَدَرَتْ إِحْدَى ثَنِيَّتَيْهِ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَزَلْ يَسْأَلُنِي وَيَطْلُبِ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أَدَعَهُ يَنْزِعُ الْآخَرَ، فَوَضَعَ ثَنِيَّتَهُ عَلَى السَّهْمِ وَأَزَمَّ عَلَيْهِ كَرَاهَةَ أَنْ يُؤْذِيَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ تَحَوَّلَ فَنَزَعَهُ، وَانْتَدَرَتْ ثَنِيَّتَهُ أَوْ إِحْدَى ثَنِيَّتَيْهِ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ أَهْتَمَ الثَّنَايَا

    ✧ When the people turned away from the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Uhud, I was the first to return to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I began looking at a man fighting in front of him, and I said: 'Be Talhah.' He said: 'Then I looked, and there was a person behind me as if he were a bird, and I did not realize that he had reached me until it was Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah. And there was Talhah lying wounded in front of him. He said: "Here is your brother, for he has fulfilled his duty." So we left him and turned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been struck in his face with two arrows. I wanted to pull them out, but Abu Ubaydah kept asking me and imploring me until I left it to him. He removed one of the two arrows, biting down on it with his teeth, and pulled it out. One of his front teeth fell out. Then he kept asking me and imploring me to let him remove the other. He placed his front tooth on the arrow and bit down hard, hating to cause pain to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ by it moving, and he removed it. His front tooth or one of his front teeth fell out. He said: 'And Abu Ubaydah became broken-toothed.'

    ✧ O people, you recite this verse: "O you who believe, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided."     ✧ Ismail, from Qays, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ, similar to the hadith of al-Mutamir, from Ismail, from Qays, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ. And this hadith has been transmitted as marfu' from Shubah by Muadh b. Muadh, Rawh b. Ubadah, and Uthman b. Umar. Bayan narrated it from Qays, from Abu Bakr, as mawquf. Mujalid narrated it from Qays, from Abu Bakr, and Said b. Zayd, the brother of Hammad, transmitted it from him as marfu'.

    أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ، قَامَ فِي النَّاسِ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَامَ فِينَا عَامَ أَوَّلَ فَاسْتَعْبَرَ فَبَكَى فَقَعَدَ، ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ قَامَ أَيْضًا فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَامَ فِينَا عَامَ أَوَّلَ، فَقَالَ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْبِرِّ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْكَذِبَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْفُجُورِ، وَلَا تَبَاغَضُوا، وَلَا تَدَابَرُوا، وَلَا تَقَاطَعُوا، وَكُونُوا عِبَادَ اللهِ إِخْوَانًا، كَمَا أَمَرَكُمُ اللهُ، وَسَلُوا اللهَ الْعَافِيَةَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُعْطَى عَبْدٌ خَيْرًا مِنْ مُعَافَاةٍ بَعْدَ يَقِينٍ

    ✧ Abu Bakr al-Siddiq stood among the people, praised and extolled Allah, then said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us last year and was moved to tears, and wept, then sat down. Then he stood again and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us last year and said: You must be truthful, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness. Do not hate one another, do not turn your backs on one another, do not sever ties with one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers, as Allah has commanded you. Ask Allah for well-being, for no servant is given anything better than well-being after certainty.

    عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ مَا هُوَ كَائِنٌ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، فَجُمِعَ الْأَوَّلُونَ وَالْآخِرُونَ فِي صَعِيدٍ وَاحِدٍ، فَفَظِعَ النَّاسُ لِذَلِكَ حَتَّى انْطَلَقُوا إِلَى آدَمَ ﷺ وَالْعَرَقُ يَكَادُ يُلْجِمُهُمْ، قَالُوا يَا آدَمُ، أَنْتَ أَبُو الْبَشَرِ، وَأَنْتَ اصْطَفَاكَ اللهُ، اشْفَعْ لَنَا إِلَى رَبِّكَ، قَالَ: قَدْ لَقِيتُ مِثْلَ الَّذِي لَقِيتُمُ انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى أَبِيكُمُ انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى نُوحٍ إِنَّ اللهَ اصْطَفَى آدَمَ وَنُوحًا وَآلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلَ عِمْرَانَ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ قَالَ: فَيَنْطَلِقُونَ إِلَى نُوحٍ فَيَقُولُونَ: اشْفَعْ لَنَا إِلَى رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ قَدِ اصْطَفَاكَ اللهُ وَاسْتَجَابَ لَكَ فِي دُعَائِكَ وَلَمْ يَدَعْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا، فَيَقُولُ: لَيْسَ ذَاكُمْ عِنْدِي، انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ، فَيَنْطَلِقُونَ إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَيَقُولُونَ لَهُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَيَقُولُ: لَيْسَ ذَاكُمْ عِنْدِي، انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى مُوسَى فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى كَلَّمَهُ تَكْلِيمًا، فَيَقُولُ مُوسَى: لَيْسَ ذَاكُمْ عِنْدِي، انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى عِيسَى، فَإِنَّهُ يُبْرِئُ الْأَكْمَهَ وَالْأَبْرَصَ وَيُحِيى الْمَوْتَى بِإِذْنِ اللهِ، فَيَقُولُ عِيسَى: لَيْسَ ذَاكُمْ عِنْدِي، وَلَكِنِ انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى سَيِّدِ وَلَدِ آدَمَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ فَإِنَّهُ أَوَّلُ مَنْ تَنْشَقُّ عَنْهُ الْأَرْضُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى مُحَمَّدٍ فَلْيَشْفَعْ لَكُمْ إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ فَيَأْتِي جِبْرِيلُ ﷺ رَبَّهُ فَيَقُولُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: ائْذَنْ لَهُ وَبَشِّرْهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ، أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: فَيَأْتِي بِهِ جِبْرِيلُ قَالَ: فَيَخِرُّ سَاجِدًا قَدْرَ جُمُعَةٍ قَالَ: فَيَقُولُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ وَقُلْ تُسْمَعْ وَاشْفَعْ تُشَفَّعْ قَالَ: فَيَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ، فَإِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَى رَبِّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى خَرَّ سَاجِدًا قَدْرَ جُمُعَةٍ أُخْرَى فَيَقُولُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: يَا مُحَمَّدُ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ وَاشْفَعْ تُشَفَّعْ وَسَلْ تُعْطَ، فَيَذْهَبُ فَيَقَعُ سَاجِدًا فَيَأْخُذُ جِبْرِيلُ بِضَبْعَيْهِ فَيَفْتَحُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ مَا لَمْ يَفْتَحْهُ عَلَى أَحَدٍ قَطُّ، فَيَقُولُ: يَا رَبِّ جَعَلْتَنِي سَيِّدَ وَلَدِ آدَمَ وَأَوَّلَ مَنْ تَنْشَقُّ عَنْهُ الْأَرْضُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَلَا فَخْرَ وَذَكَرَ الْحَوْضَ فَقَالَ: عَرْضُهُ أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: مَا بَيْنَ صَنْعَاءَ وَأَيْلَةَ، ثُمَّ يُقَالُ ادْعُوا الصِّدِّيقِينَ، قَالَ: فَيَشْفَعُونَ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ يُقَالُ ادْعُوا الْأَنْبِيَاءَ، قَالَ: فَيَجِيءُ النَّبِيُّ وَمَعَهُ الْعِصَابَةُ وَالنَّبِيُّ مَعَهُ الْخَمْسَةُ وَالسِّتَّةُ وَالنَّبِيُّ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُ أَحَدٌ، ثُمَّ يُقَالُ: ادْعُوا الشُّهَدَاءَ، قَالَ: فَيَشْفَعُونَ لِمَنْ أَرَادَ فَإِذَا فَعَلَتِ الشُّهَدَاءُ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: يَقُولُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: أَنَا أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ أَدْخِلُوا يَعْنِي: الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا قَالَ: فَيَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَيَقُولُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: انْظُرُوا مَنْ فِي النَّارِ هَلْ بَقِيَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ عَمِلَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ ؟ فَيَقُولُونَ: لَا أَحْسَبُهُ، قَالَ: فَيُؤْتَى بِرَجُلٍ، فَيَقُولُ: هَلْ عَمِلْتَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ ؟ فَيَقُولُ: لَا، غَيْرَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أُسَامِحُ النَّاسَ فِي الْبَيْعِ، فَيَقُولُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: اسْمَحُوا لِعَبْدِي كَإِسْمَاحِهِ إِلَى عَبِيدِي ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُونَ مِنَ النَّارِ رَجُلًا آخَرَ، فَيَقُولُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: هَلْ عَمِلْتَ خَيْرًا قَطُّ ؟ فَيَقُولُ: لَا غَيْرَ أَنِّي قَدْ أَمَرْتُ وَلَدِي إِذَا أَنَا مُتُّ فَأَحْرِقُونِي بِالنَّارِ، ثُمَّ اطْحَنُونِي حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُ مِثْلَ الْكُحْلِ اذْهَبُوا بِي إِلَى الْبَحْرِ فَاذْرُونِي فِي الرِّيحِ، قَالَ: يَقُولُ اللهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: لِمَ فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ ؟ قَالَ: مِنْ مَخَافَتِكَ، قَالَ: يَقُولُ: انْظُرْ إِلَى مُلْكِ أَعْظَمِ مَلِكٍ كَانَ لَكَ مِثْلُهُ أَوْ فَإِنَّ لَكَ مِثْلَهُ قَالَ: فَذَاكَ الَّذِي ضَحِكْتُ مِنْهُ مِنَ الضُّحَى. وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ حَدِيثٌ فِيهِ رَجُلَانِ لَا نَعْلَمُهُمَا رَوَيَا إِلَّا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ: أَبُو هُنَيْدَةَ الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ نَوْفَلٍ، فَإِنَّا لَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى حَدِيثًا غَيْرَ هَذَا، وَكَذَلِكَ وَالْآنُ لَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى إِلَّا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَلَى أَنَّ هَذَا الْإِسْنَادَ مَعَ مَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْإِسْنَادِ الَّذِي ذَكَرْنَا فَقَدْ رَوَاهُ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنْ جِلَّةِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ بِالنَّقْلِ وَاحْتَمَلُوهُ.

    ✧ It was shown to me what will happen until the Day of Resurrection, of the affairs of this world and the Hereafter. The first and the last were gathered on one plain, and the people were terrified by that, until they went to Adam ﷺ, while sweat nearly bridled them. They said: O Adam, you are the father of mankind, and Allah chose you; intercede for us with your Lord. He said: I have met the like of what you have met. Go to your father; go to Noah. Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran above the worlds. He said: So they go to Noah and say: Intercede for us with your Lord, for Allah chose you and answered your supplication, and you did not leave on the earth any of the disbelievers. He says: That is not with me; go to Abraham. So they go to Abraham and say the like of that to him, and he says: That is not with me; go to Moses, for Allah, Blessed and Exalted, spoke to him directly. Moses says: That is not with me; go to Jesus, for he healed the blind and the leper and revived the dead by Allah's permission. Jesus says: That is not with me, but go to the master of the children of Adam, Muhammad ﷺ, for he is the first from whom the earth will split open on the Day of Resurrection. Go to Muhammad, and let him intercede for you with your Lord. Then Gabriel ﷺ comes to his Lord, and He, Blessed and Exalted, says: Give him permission and give him glad tidings of Paradise. I think he said: Gabriel brings him, and he falls prostrate for the length of a week. Then Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: Raise your head, speak and you will be heard, intercede and your intercession will be accepted. He said: So he raises his head, and when he looks at his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, he falls prostrate for another week. Then He, Blessed and Exalted, says: O Muhammad, raise your head, intercede and your intercession will be accepted, and ask and you will be given. So he goes and falls prostrate, and Gabriel takes hold of his upper arms, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, opens for him from supplication what He has never opened for anyone. He says: O Lord, You made me the master of the children of Adam and the first from whom the earth will split open on the Day of Resurrection, and no boast. And he mentioned the cistern, saying: Its width—I think he said—is between San'a and Aylah. Then it is said: Call the truthful ones. He said: They intercede. He said: Then it is said: Call the prophets. He said: A prophet comes with a group, and a prophet with five or six, and a prophet with no one. Then it is said: Call the martyrs. He said: They intercede for whom they wish. When the martyrs have done that, he said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: I am the Most Merciful of the merciful. Admit—meaning—into Paradise those who did not associate anything with Allah. He said: So they enter Paradise. And Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: Look at those in the Fire; is there anyone left who ever did any good? They say: No, I think. He said: So a man is brought, and He says: Did you ever do any good? He says: No, except that I used to be lenient with people in trade. So Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: Be lenient with My servant as he was lenient with My servants. Then they bring out another man from the Fire, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: Did you ever do any good? He says: No, except that I commanded my children, when I die, to burn me in the fire, then grind me until I am like kohl, then go with me to the sea and scatter me in the wind. He said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: Why did you do that? He says: Out of fear of You. He says: Look at the kingdom of the greatest king; you have the like of it, or you shall have the like of it. He said: That is the one at which I laughed from the forenoon. And this hadith is a hadith in which there are two men whom we do not know to have narrated anything except this hadith: Abu Hunaydah al-Bara' b. Nawfal, for we do not know that he narrated any hadith other than this, and likewise al-An, we do not know that he narrated except this hadith, even though this chain, despite what is in it of the chain we mentioned, has been narrated by a group of eminent scholars by transmission, and they accepted it.

    ✧ I brought Abu Quhafah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: Why did you not leave the old man until I came to him? I said: Rather, he is more deserving to come to you. He said: We preserve him for the favors of his son toward us.

    ✧ My father died owing a debt. I offered his creditors to take the dates for what was owed, but they refused and did not see in it full repayment. So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: When you harvest it and place it in the drying yard, inform me. When I harvested it and placed it in the drying yard, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he came with Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah have mercy on them. He sat and invoked blessing upon it, then said: Call your creditors and pay them. I did not leave anyone who had a debt against my father except that I paid him, and thirteen wasqs remained: seven of 'ajwah and six of lawn, or six of 'ajwah and seven of lawn. I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he laughed and said: Go to Abu Bakr and Umar and inform them.     ✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, Abu Bakr ؓ was in a part of Madinah. He entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, placed his mouth on the forehead of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and began kissing him and saying: May my father and mother be your ransom; you were good alive and dead. When he came out, he passed by Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, while he was saying: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not died, and he will not die until we kill the hypocrites. He said: They had rejoiced at the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and raised their heads. Abu Bakr passed by him and said: O man, calm yourself, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has died. Have you not heard Allah, Blessed and Exalted, say: 'Indeed, you are to die, and indeed they are to die' and 'We did not grant immortality to any human before you; so if you die, will they live forever?' He said: Then he went to the pulpit, ascended it, praised and extolled Allah, then said: O people, if Muhammad was your god whom you worship, then your god has died; but if your god is Allah who is in heaven, then your god is alive and does not die. Then he recited: 'Muhammad is but a messenger; messengers have passed away before him,' until the end of the verse. Then he descended, and the believers rejoiced at that, and their joy increased, while the hypocrites were overcome with gloom. Abdullah b. Umar said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, it was as if there had been coverings on their faces and they were lifted.

    ✧ When the people turned away from the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Uhud, I was the first to come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I began looking at a man fighting in front of him and said, "Be Talhah." Then I looked and there was a person behind me as if he were a bird; I did not realize he had caught up with me, and it was Abu ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrah. There was Talhah lying fallen before him. He said, "Your brother has fulfilled his duty." So we left him and turned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It turned out that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been struck in his face by two arrows. I wanted to pull them out, but Abu ʿUbaydah kept asking and imploring me until I let him. He pulled out one of the two arrows, biting on it with his teeth, and extracted it, and one of his front teeth fell out. Then he kept asking me to let him pull out the other. He placed his front tooth on the arrow and bit down, fearing to hurt the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if he moved, and he pulled it out, and his front tooth or one of his front teeth fell out. Thus Abu ʿUbaydah became gap-toothed.

    ✧ I heard ʿAlī b. Abī Tālib ؓ narrating from Abū Bakr al-Siddīq, may Allah have mercy on him, from the Prophet ﷺ, similar to the hadith of ʿAlī that Asmāʾ b. al-Hakam narrated. We do not know this hadith to be reported from the Prophet ﷺ except through this chain we mentioned. Both chains are defective. As for Asmāʾ b. al-Hakam, he is an unknown man who narrated only this hadith, and none narrated from him except ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah. One cannot rely on every hadith like this, especially since Shuʿbah doubted his name. As for ʿAbd Allah b. Saʿīd, he is a man of rejected hadith; scholars of transmission do not differ about the weakness of his hadith. Therefore, it is not obligatory to take him as proof in what he alone narrates. In what trustworthy narrators share with him, we are content with their narration over his.     ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood among us like my standing among you today and said: "People have not been given anything better than forgiveness and well-being, so ask Allah for both."

    دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَنَحْنُ فِي الرَّوْضَةِ فَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْأَعْوَادِ عَامَ أَوَّلَ: مَا أُعْطِيَ عَبْدٌ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْيَقِينِ وَالْعَافِيَةِ فَسَلُوا اللهَ حُسْنَ الْيَقِينِ وَالْعَافِيَةَ

    ✧ Abu Bakr entered upon us while we were in the Rawda. He ascended the minbar, praised and extolled Allah, then said: O people, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say on these planks last year: A servant has not been given anything more excellent than sound certainty and well-being. So ask Allah for sound certainty and well-being.

     كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ وَلا يَجِدْ لَهُ مِنْ دُونِ اللهِ وَلِيًّا وَلا نَصِيرًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ أَلَا أُقْرِئُكَ آيَةً أُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيَّ ؟ " قُلْتُ: بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: فَأَقْرَأَنِيهَا فَلَا أَعْلَمُ إِلَّا أَنِّي وَجَدْتُ انْقِصَامَ ظَهْرِي فَتَمَطَّأْتُ لَهَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " مَا لَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؟ " قُلْتُ: بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، وَأَيُّنَا لَمْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا، وَإِنَّا لَمُجَازَوْنَ بِمَا عَمِلْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَأَصْحَابُكَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ فَتُجْزَوْنَ فِي الدُّنْيَا حَتَّى تَلْقَوْنَ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى وَلَيْسَ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبٌ، وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُونَ فَيُجْمَعُ ذَلِكَ لَهُمْ حَتَّى يُجْزَوْا بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

     ✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when this verse was revealed: 'Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it, and he will not find for himself besides Allah any protector or helper.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Abu Bakr, shall I not recite to you a verse that has been revealed to me?' I said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He recited it to me, and I do not know except that I felt my back break, so I stretched for it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What is the matter with you, O Abu Bakr?' I said: 'May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah. Which of us has not done evil? Indeed we will be recompensed for what we have done.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'As for you, O Abu Bakr, and your believing companions, you will be recompensed in this world until you meet Allah, Blessed and Exalted, and you will have no sins. As for the others, that will be gathered for them until they are recompensed for it on the Day of Resurrection.'

     ✧ When the polytheists expelled the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah, Abu Bakr said: They have expelled their Prophet; they will surely perish. Then this verse was revealed: 'Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged...'

     ✧ Umar said to Abu Bakr: O best of people. He said: Since you have said that, I indeed heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The sun has not risen on a man better than Umar.

     ✧ Guard yourselves against the Fire, even with half a date, for it straightens the crooked, and it wards off from the hungry what it wards off from the full.

     ✧ I said: O Messenger of God, teach me a supplication that I may supplicate with. He said: "Say: O God, indeed I have wronged myself with much wrong, and none forgives sins but You, so forgive me and have mercy on me. Indeed none forgives sins but You."

     كَتَبَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ إِلَى عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ ؓ: أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَقَدْ عَرَفْتَ وَصِيَّةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْأَنْصَارِ عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ: اقْبَلُوا مِنْ مُحْسِنِهِمْ وَتَجَاوَزُوا عَنْ مُسِيئِهِمْ

     ✧ Abu Bakr al-Siddiq wrote to 'Amr b. al-'As ؓ: To proceed: You have known the testament of the Messenger of God ﷺ concerning the Ansar at his death: Accept from their good-doers and overlook their wrongdoers.

     كُنَّا مَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ إِذِ اسْتَسْقَى فَأَتَى بِمَاءٍ وَعَسَلٍ فَلَمَّا وَضَعَهُ عَلَى يَدِهِ بَكَى وَانْتَحَبَ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا نَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قُلْنَا: يَا خَلِيفَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ: مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى هَذَا الْبُكَاءِ ؟ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا أَنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَدْفَعُ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا أَرَى شَيْئًا فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ: مَا الَّذِي رَأَيْتُكَ تَدْفَعُ عَنْ نَفْسِكِ وَلَا أَرَى شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ: الدُّنْيَا تَطَاوَلَتْ لِي فَقُلْتُ: إِلَيْكِ عَنِّي فَقَالَتْ: أَمَا إِنَّكَ لَسْتَ بِمُدْرِكِي. فَشَقَّ عَلَيَّ وَخَشِيتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ قَدْ خَالَفْتُ أَمْرَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَدْرَكَتْنِي الدُّنْيَا

     ✧ We were with Abu Bakr ؓ when he asked for a drink, and water and honey were brought to him. When he placed it in his hand, he wept and sobbed until we thought something had happened to him, and we did not ask him about anything. When he finished, we said: O successor of the Messenger of God ﷺ, what made you weep? He said: While I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ, I saw him pushing something away from himself while I saw nothing. I said: O Messenger of God, what is it that I saw you pushing away from yourself while I saw nothing? He said: The world extended itself to me, and I said: Away from me! And it said: Indeed you will not catch me. That distressed me, and I feared that I had opposed the command of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the world had caught up with me.

     ✧ "The Dajjal will emerge from a land called Khurasan in the east, followed by peoples whose faces are like hammered shields."

     نَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ، عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ سُبَيْعٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ حُرَيْثٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِنَحْوِ حَدِيثِ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْفَزَارِيِّ. وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَا نَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا رَوَاهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِهَذَا اللَّفْظِ إِلَّا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ - ؓ وَلَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ إِلَّا عَمْرُو بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ، وَلَا عَنْ عَمْرٍو إِلَّا الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ سُبَيْعٍ، وَالْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ سُبَيْعٍ لَا نَحْفَظُ أَنَّ أَحَدًا حَدَّثَ عَنْهُ غَيْرُ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ، وَلَا نَعْلَمُهُ رَوَى غَيْرَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، وَابْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ إِنَّمَا يُقَالُ: سَمِعَهُ مِنِ ابْنِ شَوْذَبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي التَّيَّاحِ

     ✧ Sa'id b. Abi 'Aruba narrated to us, from Abu al-Tayyah, from al-Mughira b. Subay', from 'Amr b. Hurayth, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ, similar to the hadith of Abu Ishaq al-Fazari. And this hadith: we do not know anyone who narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ with this wording except Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ؓ, and we do not know anyone who narrated it from Abu Bakr except 'Amr b. Hurayth, nor from 'Amr except al-Mughira b. Subay'. And al-Mughira b. Subay': we do not remember that anyone narrated from him other than Abu al-Tayyah, and we do not know that he narrated other than this hadith. And Ibn Abi 'Aruba did not hear from Abu al-Tayyah; it is only said that he heard it from Ibn Shawdhab, from Abu al-Tayyah.

     ✧ I saw Abu Bakr meet al-Hasan b. 'Ali and he began to say: May my father be ransomed for the one who resembles the Prophet, not resembling 'Ali, whose father is 'Ali, laughing or barely laughing, smiling.

     ✧ "When this verse was revealed: O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, I said: O Messenger of God, by God, I will not speak to you except as a confidential brother."

     أَرْسَلَتْ فَاطِمَةُ ؓ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ: يَا خَلِيفَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْتَ وَرِثْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ أَمْ أَهْلُهُ ؟ قَالَ: بَلْ أَهْلُهُ. قَالَتْ: فَمَا بَالُ سَهْمِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِذَا أَطْعَمَ اللهُ نَبِيًّا طُعْمَةً، ثُمَّ قَبَضَهُ فَهُوَ لِلَّذِي يَقُومُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ فَرَأَيْتُ أَنْ أَرُدَّهُ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ. فَقَالَتْ: أَنْتَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ أَعْلَمُ

     ✧ Fatima ؓ sent to Abu Bakr ؓ: O successor of the Messenger of God ﷺ, did you inherit the Messenger of God or his family? He said: Rather his family. She said: Then what about the share of the Prophet ﷺ? He said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: When God gives a prophet a provision and then takes him, it belongs to the one who stands after him, so I saw fit to return it to the Muslims. She said: You and the Messenger of God know best.

     قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ: أَنَعْمَلُ فِي أَمْرٍ قَدْ فُرِغَ مِنْهُ، أَمْ مُؤْتَنَفٍ ؟ قَالَ: " بَلْ فِي أَمْرٍ قَدْ فُرِغَ مِنْهُ ". قَالَ قُلْتُ: فَفِيمَ الْعَمَلُ ؟ قَالَ: اعْمَلُوا فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ لِمَا خُلِقَ لَهُ

     ✧ I said: O Messenger of God, do we act in a matter already decreed, or in one newly begun? He said: "Rather, in a matter already decreed." He said: I said: Then what is the point of action? He said: "Act, for everyone is facilitated toward that for which he was created."

     أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ ؓ قَامَ فِي النَّاسِ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَلَا إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَامَ فِينَا عَامَ أَوَّلَ - فَاسْتَعْبَرَ وَبَكَى، ثُمَّ قَعَدَ - ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ قَامَ أَيْضًا فَقَالَ: إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَامَ فِينَا عَامَ أَوَّلَ فَقَالَ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْبِرِّ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْكَذِبَ فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْفُجُورِ، وَلَا تَبَاغَضُوا، وَلَا تَدَابَرُوا، وَلَا تَقَاطَعُوا وَكُونُوا إِخْوَانًا كَمَا أَمَرَكُمُ اللهُ، وَسَلُوا اللهَ الْعَافِيَةَ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُعْطَى عَبْدٌ خَيْرًا مِنْ مُعَافَاةٍ بَعْدَ يَقِينٍ

     ✧ Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ؓ stood among the people, praised God and extolled Him, then said: "Indeed, the Messenger of God ﷺ stood before us last year" — he was moved and wept, then sat down — then he stood again and said: "Indeed, the Messenger of God ﷺ stood before us last year and said: 'Adhere to truthfulness, for it is part of righteousness, and beware of lying, for it is part of wickedness. Do not hate one another, do not turn your backs on one another, do not sever ties, and be brothers as God has commanded you. Ask God for well-being, for no servant is given anything better than well-being after certainty.'"

     أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ أُمَّتِي إِذَا رَأَوُا الظَّالِمَ فَلَمْ يَأْخُذُوا عَلَى يَدَيْهِ يُوشِكُوا أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللهُ مِنْهُ بِعِقَابٍ

     ✧ O people, you recite this verse: 'O you who believe, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided.' I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'When my community sees an oppressor and does not restrain his hands, it is likely that God will afflict them all with punishment from Him.'

     ✧ Rawh narrated to us, from Za'idah, from Isma'il, from Qays, from Abu Bakr, from the Prophet ﷺ. A group stopped it [as a Companion statement], and the hadith belongs to the one who added [the chain] if he is trustworthy. Shu'bah, Za'idah, al-Mu'tamir, and others traced it back, so we restricted ourselves to the hadith of those we mentioned rather than others.

     ✧ I brought Abu Quhafa to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "Why did you not leave the old man until we came to him?" I said: "Rather, he is more deserving to come to you." He said: "We preserve him for the kindness of his son to us."

     إِنَّ رِجَالًا حِينَ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَزِعُوا عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى أَخَذَ بَعْضَهُمُ الْوَسْوَسَةُ، قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: فَكُنْتُ مِنْهُمْ فَبَيْنَا أَنَا جَالِسٌ فِي ظِلِّ أُطُمٍ مِنَ الْآطَامِ مَرَّ عَلَيَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ أَشْعُرْ بِهِ، وَلَمْ أُسَلِّمْ فَانْطَلَقَ عُمَرُ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَلَا أُعَجِّبُكَ، مَرَرْتُ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَسَلَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ السَّلَامَ، فَأَقْبَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ حَتَّى أَتَيَا فَسَلَّمَا جَمِيعًا، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: جَاءَنِي أَخُوكَ عُمَرُ فَزَعَمَ أَنَّهُ مَرَّ عَلَيْكَ فَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ تَرُدَّ السَّلَامَ، قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: فَقُلْتُ: وَاللهِ مَا شَعَرْتُ بِكَ حَيْثُ مَرَرْتَ وَلَا سَلَّمْتَ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: صَدَقَ عُثْمَانُ، وَقَدْ شَغَلَكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ أَمْرٌ، فَقَالَ: أَجَلْ، قَالَ: مَا هُوَ ؟ قُلْتُ: قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ نَجَاةِ هَذَا الْأَمْرِ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: قَدْ سَأَلْتُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، قَالَ عُثْمَانُ: فَقُلْتُ: بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي

     ✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, some men grieved over him until some of them were afflicted with whispers of madness. Uthman said: I was one of them. While I was sitting in the shade of a tower among the fortresses, Umar b. al-Khattab passed by me and greeted me, but I did not notice him nor return the greeting. Umar went until he entered upon Abu Bakr and said to him: Shall I not amaze you? I passed by Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return the greeting to me. Abu Bakr and Umar both came forward until they reached me and greeted me together. Abu Bakr said: Your brother Umar came to me and claimed that he passed by you and greeted you, but you did not return the greeting. Uthman said: I said: By Allah, I did not notice you when you passed nor when you greeted. Abu Bakr said: Uthman has spoken the truth; some matter preoccupied you from that. He said: Yes. He said: What is it? I said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died before I could ask him about the salvation of this matter. Abu Bakr said: I already asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that. Uthman said: I said: May my father and mother be your ransom.

     لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا. حَتَّى إِذَا دَنَا مِنَّا وَكَانَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُ قَدْرُ رُمْحَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٍ، قُلْتُ: هَذَا الطَّلَبُ قَدْ لَحِقَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: وَبَكَيْتُ، فَقَالَ: لِمَ تَبْكِي ؟ قُلْتُ: أَمَا وَاللهِ مَا عَلَى نَفْسِي أَبْكِي وَلَكِنْ أَبْكِي عَلَيْكَ، فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنَاهُ قَالَ: فَسَاخَتْ فَرَسُهُ فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَى بَطْنِهَا وَوَثَبَ عَنْهَا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ، وَنَادَى يَا مُحَمَّدُ: إِنَّ هَذَا أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: مِنْكَ أَوْ عَمَلُكَ فَادْعُ اللهَ أَنْ يُنَجِّيَنِي مِمَّا أَنَا فِيهِ، فَوَاللهِ لَأُعَمِّيَنَّ عَلَى مَنْ وَرَائِي مِنَ الطَّلَبِ، وَخُذْ سَهْمًا مِنِّي فَإِنَّكَ سَتَمُرُّ عَلَى إِبِلٍ لِي بِمَكَانِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَخُذْ مِنْهَا مَا شِئْتَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَا حَاجَةَ لِي فِيهَا فَدَعَا لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَانْطَلَقَ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِهِ وَأَنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ فَتَلَقَّاهُ النَّاسُ وَخَرَجَ النَّاسُ عَلَى الطُّرُقِ وَالنِّسَاءُ وَالْخَدَمُ فِي الطُّرُقِ يَقُولُونَ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ جَاءَ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، وَتَنَازَعَهُ الْقَوْمُ أَيُّهُمْ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ: نَنْزِلُ اللَّيْلَةَ عَلَى بَنِي النَّجَّارِ أَخْوَالِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ لِنُكْرِمَهُمْ بِذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ أَصْبَحَ فَغَدَا حَيْثُ أُمِرَ، قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ: وَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فِي عِشْرِينَ رَاكِبًا فَقُلْنَا: مَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: هُوَ عَلَى أَثَرِي، ثُمَّ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَمَا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى قَرَأْتُ سُوَرًا مِنَ الْمُفَصَّلِ. وَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ رَوَى مِنْهُ شُعْبَةُ حَرْفًا وَهُوَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ شَرِبَ حَتَّى رَضِيتُ.

     ✧ "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." Until when he drew near to us and there was between us and him the distance of two or three spears, I said: "This pursuit has caught up with us, O Messenger of Allah." He said: And I wept. He said: "Why do you weep?" I said: "By Allah, I am not weeping for myself, but I weep for you." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated against him: "O Allah, suffice us against him." He said: His horse sank into the ground up to its belly, and he leaped off it to the ground, and he called out: "O Muhammad, I think this is from you or your doing, so supplicate to Allah to save me from what I am in. By Allah, I will mislead those behind me of the pursuit, and take an arrow from me, for you will pass by camels of mine at such and such a place, so take from them whatever you wish." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "I have no need of them." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated for him, and he departed and returned to his companions. I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we reached Madinah, and the people met him, and men, women, and servants came out onto the roads saying: "Allah is greater; Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has come." The people disputed which of them he would stay with, but the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "Tonight we will stay with Banu al-Najjar, the maternal uncles of Abd al-Muttalib, to honor them by that." Then he rose in the morning and went where he was commanded. Al-Bara said: The first to come to us was Umar b. al-Khattab with twenty riders, and we said: "What happened to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said: "He is on my track." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived I had recited some surahs from the Mufassal. This hadith Shu'ba narrated from it a portion, namely that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank until I was satisfied.

     نَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِذَلِكَ. وَحَدِيثُ إِسْرَائِيلَ قَدْ شَارَكَهُ عَلَى مِثْلِ رِوَايَتِهِ جَمَاعَةٌ مِنْهُمْ زُهَيْرٌ وَحُدَيْجُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَغَيْرُهُمَا، وَهُوَ مِنْ أَحْسَنِ الْأَسَانِيدِ الَّتِي رُوِيَتْ عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِ وَرِضْوَانُهُ

     ✧ Muhammad b. Ja'far narrated to us, from Shu'ba, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara, from Abu Bakr likewise. And Israel's hadith was shared by a group in a similar narration, among them Zuhayr and Hudayj b. Mu'awiya and others, and it is one of the best chains of transmission narrated from Abu Bakr, may Allah's mercy and pleasure be upon him.

     لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةُ أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَالِسٌ وَمَعَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: لَوْ تَنَحَّيْتَ لَا تُؤْذِيكَ بِشَيْءٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " إِنَّهُ سَيُحَالُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهَا " فَأَقْبَلَتْ حَتَّى وَقَفَتْ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَقَالَتْ: يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ هَجَانَا صَاحِبُكَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: لَا وَرَبِّ هَذِهِ الْبَنِيَّةِ مَا يَنْطِقُ بِالشِّعْرِ وَلَا يَتَفَوَّهُ بِهِ. فَقَالَتْ: إِنَّكَ لَمُصَدَّقٌ، فَلَمَّا وَلَّتْ قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: مَا رَأَتْكَ، قَالَ: لَا مَا زَالَ مَلَكٌ يَسْتُرُنِي حَتَّى وَلَّتْ

     ✧ When "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab" was revealed, the wife of Abu Lahab came while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr said to him: "If you move aside, she will not harm you with anything." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "A barrier will be placed between me and her." She approached until she stood before Abu Bakr and said: "O Abu Bakr, your companion has satirized us." Abu Bakr said: "No, by the Lord of this structure, he does not utter poetry nor speak it." She said: "You are indeed truthful." When she turned away, Abu Bakr said: "She did not see you." He said: "No, an angel kept covering me until she turned away."
