سَمِعْتُهُ يُحَدِّثُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيِّبِ.

✧ I heard him narrating to Sa'id b. al-Musayyib: He said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, some men grieved over him until some of them were afflicted with whispers of madness. Uthman said: I was one of them. While I was sitting in the shade of a tower among the fortresses, Umar b. al-Khattab passed by me and greeted me, but I did not notice him nor return the greeting. Umar went until he entered upon Abu Bakr and said to him: Shall I not amaze you? I passed by Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return the greeting to me. Abu Bakr and Umar both came forward until they reached me and greeted me together. Abu Bakr said: Your brother Umar came to me and claimed that he passed by you and greeted you, but you did not return the greeting. Uthman said: I said: By Allah, I did not notice you when you passed nor when you greeted. Abu Bakr said: Uthman has spoken the truth; some matter preoccupied you from that. He said: Yes. He said: What is it? I said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died before I could ask him about the salvation of this matter. Abu Bakr said: I already asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that. Uthman said: I said: May my father and mother be your ransom.
