✧ That he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of God, we have neighbors from Sabaʾ—people of might, dominion, and arrogance. Give me permission to call them to Islam; if they refuse, then give me permission to fight them with my people and those who obey me." So he gave him permission. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ had a change of mind and said, "You mentioned the matter of Sabaʾ as you did. Call them to Islam; if they respond, accept from them and refrain from them; and if they refuse, do not confront them until my command comes to you." He said, "O Messenger of God, do you think Sabaʾ is a land or a woman?" He said, "It is neither a land nor a woman; rather, it is a man who fathered ten tribes. Six of them went south and four went north. The Yemenis are Madhḥij, al-Azd, Kinda, Ḥimyar, al-Ashʿariyyūn, and Anmār." A man said, "O Messenger of God, what is Anmār?" He said, "The father of Bajīla and Khathʿam. And four of them went north: Lakhm, Judhām, Ghassān, and ʿĀmila."
