حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ الْمُهَاجِرِ عَنِ ابْنِ مُحَيْرِيزٍ قَالَ

صَحِبْتُ فَضَالَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدٍ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ أَوْصِنِي رَحِمَكَ اللهُ قَالَ احْفَظْ عَنِّي ثَلَاثَ خِلَالٍ يَنْفَعُكَ اللهُ بِهِنَّ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَعْرِفَ وَلَا تُعْرَفَ فَافْعَلْ وَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَسْمَعَ وَلَا تَكَلَّمَ فَافْعَلْ وَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَجْلِسَ وَلَا يُجْلَسَ إِلَيْكَ فَافْعَلْ

✧ I accompanied Fadalah b. Ubayd, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and said, “Counsel me, may God have mercy on you.” He said, “Preserve from me three traits by which God will benefit you: if you are able to know but not be known, then do so; if you are able to listen but not speak, then do so; and if you are able to sit but not have people sit with you, then do so.”
