✧ I spent a night with the Prophet ﷺ to observe how he prayed. He stood at a water skin hung on a peg in the wall, performed ablution, then prayed two rak‘ahs, his standing being like his bowing and his bowing like his prostration. Then he slept, then woke up, performed ablution and sniffed water into his nose, then recited about fifty verses from Al ‘Imran: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day…” He continued doing this until he had prayed ten rak‘ahs. Then he stood praying a single rak‘ah and made it witr. At that point the muezzin called, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood after the muezzin fell silent and prayed two light rak‘ahs, then sat until he performed the Fajr prayer.
