✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me, so I went out to him and found him suffering from a fever, having bandaged his head. He said: "Take my hand, O Faḍl." So I took his hand until he reached the pulpit and sat on it. Then he said: "Call out among the people." So I called out among the people, and a group of people gathered to him. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "O people, indeed rights have drawn near to me from among your midst. Whoever I have lashed his back, here is my back, let him take retribution from it. Indeed, whoever I have insulted his honor, here is my honor, let him take retribution from it. Indeed, let no man say, 'I fear ill will from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Indeed, ill will is not of my nature nor of my concern. Indeed, the most beloved of you to me is the one who takes a right if he has one against me, or who absolves me, so that I meet Allah with a sound soul. Indeed, I do not see that as sufficient for me until I stand among you repeatedly." Then he descended and prayed the noon prayer, then returned to the pulpit and repeated his speech about ill will and other matters. Then he said: "O people, whoever has anything with him, let him return it, and let him not say 'the disgraces of this world.' Indeed, the disgraces of this world are easier than the disgraces of the Hereafter." A man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have three dirhams owed by you." He said: "Indeed, we do not call a claimant a liar, nor do we make him swear. How did they come to be owed by me to you?" He said: "Do you remember the day a poor man passed by you, and you ordered me to give them to him?" He said: "Give them to him, O Faḍl." Then another man stood up to him and said: "I have three dirhams that I pilfered in the cause of Allah." He said: "Why did you pilfer them?" He said: "I was in need of them." He said: "Take them, O Faḍl." Then he said: "O people, whoever fears something within himself, let him stand, and I will pray for him." A man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am indeed a liar, and I am indeed a hypocrite, and I am indeed prone to sleeping." He said: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and remove sleep from him when he desires." Then another man stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am indeed a liar, and I am indeed a hypocrite, and there is nothing of things except that I have committed it." ʿUmar said to him: "O this one, you have exposed yourself." He said: "Enough, O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, the disgraces of this world are easier than the disgraces of the Hereafter." Then he said: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and turn his affair to good." Then ʿUmar spoke a word to them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "ʿUmar is with me, and I am with him, and the truth after me is with ʿUmar wherever he is."
