- Sufyān

- Ziyād b. Abū Maryam
- Mā Kān Saʿīd b. Jubayr
✧ He is ashamed to narrate a hadith while I am sitting. Ziyad says it from Abdullah b. Mughaffal, who said: I entered with my father upon Abdullah, and my father said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Remorse is repentance.' He said: 'Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Remorse is repentance.'
Notes
machine translationThis ḥadīth has a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), but the two (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) did not narrate it with this wording. They only agreed upon the ḥadīth of the slander (ḥadīth al-ifk) and the saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ʿĀʾishah: "If you are innocent, Allah will soon declare your innocence; and if you have committed a sin, seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him, for when a servant confesses his sin and then repents, Allah accepts his repentance."

machine translationThis is an error, and Ibn ʿUyaynah made the error in it. It is only Ziyād b. al-Jarrāḥ, and he is not Ziyād b. Abī Maryam. I heard Muṣʿab b. Saʿīd al-Ḥarrānī say, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAmr, that he said to Ibn ʿUyaynah: I saw Ziyād b. al-Jarrāḥ, and he is not Ziyād b. Abī Maryam.

machine translationThe sound (ṣaḥīḥ) version is what al-Thawrī narrated, and his brother ʿUmar b. Saʿīd, and those who followed them, from ʿAbd al-Karīm, from Ziyād, from Ibn Maʿqil, that he was with his father at Ibn Masʿūd's, and heard him say, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a raised report (marfūʿ).
