✧ While I was standing in the market during the governorship of Ziyad, I struck one hand upon the other in amazement. A man from the Ansar, whose father had been a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: 'What amazes you, O Abu Burdah?' I said: 'I am amazed at a people whose religion is one, whose prophet is one, whose call is one, whose pilgrimage is one, and whose military campaigns are one, yet some of them consider it lawful to kill others.' He said: 'Do not be amazed, for I heard my father report that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed, my nation is a nation shown mercy; there is no reckoning or punishment upon it in the Hereafter. Its punishment is only in killing, earthquakes, and tribulations."'
