36. Sacrificial Animals

    النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «أَتُرِيدُ أَنْ تُمِيتَهَا مَوْتَاتٍ؟ هَلْ حَدَدْتَ شَفْرَتَكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُضْجِعَهَا»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do you want to kill it twice? Did you sharpen your blade before laying it down?”

  2. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7571Sahih

    يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى {اذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا صَوَافَّ} قَالَ «قِيَامًا عَلَى ثَلَاثِ قَوَائِمَ مَعْقُولَةً بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُمَّ مِنْكَ وَإِلَيْكَ»

    ✧ Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: “Mention the name of Allah over them standing in ranks.” He said: “Standing on three legs, with the fourth tied, saying: In the name of Allah, and Allah is Most Great. O Allah, from You and to You.”

  3. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7572Sahih

    فِي رَجُلٍ ذَبَحَ وَنَسِيَ أَنْ يُسَمِّيَ قَالَ «يَأْكُلُ» وَفِي الْمَجُوسِيِّ يَذْبَحُ وَيُسَمِّي قَالَ «لَا تَأْكُلْ»

    ✧ Regarding a man who slaughtered and forgot to mention the name of Allah, he said: “He may eat.” And regarding a Magian who slaughters and mentions the name of Allah, he said: “Do not eat.”

  4. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7573Sahih

    خَاصَمَهُمُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ فَقَالُوا مَا قَتَلُوا أَكَلُوا وَمَا قَتَلَ اللَّهُ لَمْ يَأْكُلُوا

    ✧ The polytheists disputed with them, saying: “What they kill they eat, and what Allah kills they do not eat.”

  5. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7574Sahih

    أَخْبَرَهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَا مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ يَقْتُلُ عُصْفُورًا فَمَا فَوْقَهَا بِغَيْرِ حَقِّهَا إِلَّا سَأَلَهُ اللَّهُ ﷻ عَنْهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ» قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا حَقُّهَا؟ قَالَ «حَقُّهَا أَنْ يَذْبَحَهَا فَيَأْكُلَهَا وَلَا يَقْطَعَ رَأْسَهَا فَيَرْمِيَ بِهِ»

    ✧ He reported from the Prophet ﷺ who said: “No person kills a sparrow or anything larger without its due right except that Allah ﷻ will ask him about it on the Day of Resurrection.” It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is its due right?” He said: “Its due right is that he slaughters it and eats it, and does not cut off its head and throw it away.”

    مَرَرْتُ مَعَ ابْنِ عُمَرَ فِي طَرِيقٍ مِنْ طُرُقِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَإِذَا فِتْيَةٌ قَدْ نَصَبُوا دَجَاجَةً يَرْمُونَهَا قَالَ فَغَضِبَ وَقَالَ «مَنْ فَعَلَ هَذَا؟» فَتَفَرَّقُوا فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ «لَعَنَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَنْ يُمَثِّلُ بِالْحَيَوَانِ»

    ✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed whoever imitates or represents with animals."

  7. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7576Sahih

    قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِأَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ بْنِ التَّيِّهَانِ «إِيَّاكَ وَاللَّبُونَ اذْبَحْ لَنَا عَنَاقًا» فَأَمَرَ أَبُو الْهَيْثَمِ امْرَأَتَهُ فَعَجَنَتْ لَهُمْ عَجِينًا وَقَطَعَ أَبُو الْهَيْثَمِ اللَّحْمَ وَطَبَخَ وَشَوَى

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihan: “Beware of the milch camel; slaughter for us a young she-goat.” So Abu al-Haytham ordered his wife, and she kneaded dough for them, and Abu al-Haytham cut the meat, cooked and grilled.

  8. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7577Abu Dawud silent

    نَهَى عَنْ ذَبْحِ ذَوَاتِ الدَّرِّ وَعَنِ السَّوْمِ بِالسِّلْعَةِ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ»

    ✧ He forbade slaughtering milk-producing animals and trading goods before sunrise.

  9. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7578Sahih

    «أَرْبَعُونَ خَصْلَةً أَعْلَاهُنَّ مِنْحَةُ الْعَنْزِ لَا يَعْمَلُ عَبْدٌ بِخَصْلَةٍ مِنْهَا رَجَاءَ ثَوَابِهَا وَتَصْدِيقَ مَوْعُودِهَا إِلَّا أَدْخَلَهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ»

    ✧ “Forty traits, the highest of which is giving a she-goat as a gift (minhat al-‘anz). No servant performs any one of them hoping for its reward and believing in its promise except that Allah will admit him to Paradise because of it.”

    أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابَهُ مَرُّوا بِامْرَأَةٍ فَذَبَحَتْ لَهُمْ شَاةً وَاتَّخَذَتْ لَهُمْ طَعَامًا فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا اتَّخَذْنَا لَكُمْ طَعَامًا فَادْخُلُوا فَكُلُوا فَدَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابُهُ وَكَانُوا لَا يَبْدَءُونَ حَتَّى يَبْدَأَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ لُقْمَةً فَلَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ يُسِيغَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «هَذِهِ شَاةٌ ذُبِحَتْ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِ أَهْلِهَا» فَقَالَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنَّا لَا نَحْتَشِمُ مِنْ آلِ مُعَاذٍ وَلَا يَحْتَشِمُونَ مِنَّا إِنَّا نَأْخُذُ مِنْهُمْ وَيَأْخُذُونَ مِنَّا

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions passed by a woman, and she slaughtered a sheep for them and prepared food for them. When he returned, she said, “O Messenger of Allah, we prepared food for you, so enter and eat.” The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions entered, and they would not begin until the Prophet ﷺ began. He took a morsel but could not swallow it, so the Prophet ﷺ said, “This is a sheep slaughtered without the permission of its owners.” The woman said, “O Prophet of Allah, we do not feel shy before the family of Mu‘adh, nor do they feel shy before us. We take from them and they take from us.”

    عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ «أَنَّهُمْ ذَبَحُوا يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ الْحُمُرَ وَالْبِغَالَ وَالْخَيْلَ فَنَهَاهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ عَنِ الْحُمُرِ وَالْبِغَالِ وَلَمْ يَنْهَهُمْ عَنِ الْخَيْلِ»

    ✧ Jabir b. ‘Abd Allah reported that they slaughtered on the day of Khaybar domestic donkeys, mules, and horses. The Prophet ﷺ forbade them the donkeys and mules, but did not forbid them the horses.

  12. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7581Sahih

    أَنَّهُ أَصَابَ أَرْنَبَيْنِ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ حَدِيدَةً يُذَكِّيهِمَا فَذَبَحَهُمَا بِمَرْوَةٍ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي اصْطَدْتُ أَرْنَبَيْنِ فَلَمْ أَجِدْ حَدِيدَةً أُذَكِّيهِمَا فَذَكَّيْتُهُمَا بِمَرْوَةٍ أَفَآكُلُ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ كُلْ»

    ✧ He caught two hares and did not find a blade to slaughter them properly, so he slaughtered them with a sharp stone. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I hunted two hares and did not find a blade to slaughter them properly, so I slaughtered them with a sharp stone. May I eat?” He said, “Yes, eat.”

  13. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7582Sahih

    سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَعْتِرُ عَتِيرَةً فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَمِنْ رَجَبٍ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اذْبَحُوا لِلَّهِ فِي أَيِّ شَهْرٍ مَا كَانَ وَبَرُّوا لِلَّهِ وَأَطْعِمُوا»

    ✧ From Nubayshah, he said: A man asked the Prophet ﷺ saying, "O Messenger of Allah, we used to offer sacrifices during the pre-Islamic period of Ignorance in the month of Rajab. What do you command us to do?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Offer sacrifices to Allah in any month you want and do good deeds for Allah, and feed the needy."

  14. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7583Sahih

    «أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَمَرَ فِي الْفَرَعِ فِي كُلِّ خَمْسَةٍ وَاحِدَةٌ»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ commanded regarding the fara‘: one in every five.

  15. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7584Sahih

    سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْفَرَعِ فَقَالَ «الْفَرَعُ حَقٌّ وَإِنْ تَرَكْتَهُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ ابْنَ مَخَاضٍ أَوِ ابْنَ لَبُونٍ فَتَحْمِلَ عَلَيْهِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَوْ تُعْطِيَهُ أَرْمَلَةً خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَذْبَحَهُ يَلْصَقَ لَحْمُهُ بِوَبَرِهِ وَتُولِهُ نَاقَتَكَ» صحيح

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the fara‘. He said, “The fara‘ is a duty. If you leave it until it becomes a bint makhad or a bint labun, and you carry things on it in the way of Allah or give it to a widow, that is better than slaughtering it while its meat sticks to its wool and you leave your she-camel bereft.” Sahih.

  16. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7585Sahih

    قَالَ فِي الْفَرَعَةِ «هِيَ حَقٌّ وَلَا يَذْبَحُهَا وَهِيَ غُرَّةٌ مِنَ الْغُرَّاةِ يَلْصَقُ فِي يَدِكَ وَلَكِنْ أَمْكِنْهَا مِنَ اللَّبَنِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ مِنْ خِيَارِ الْمَالِ فَاذْبَحْهَا»

    ✧ He said concerning the fara‘ah: “It is a duty, and do not slaughter it while it is a young weanling that clings to your hand, but let it have milk until, when it is among the best of the wealth, then slaughter it.”

  17. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7586Sahih

    رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِي قَالَ «غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ» قُلْتُ لَهُ ذَلِكَ مَرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا تَرَى فِي الْعَتَائِرِ وَالْفَرَائِعِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ شَاءَ عَتَرَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ لَمْ يَعْتِرْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَرَّعَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ لَمْ يُفَرِّعُ وَفِي الشَّاةِ أُضْحِيَّتُهَا»

    ✧ I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Seek forgiveness for me.” He said, “May Allah forgive you.” I said that to him once or twice, then a man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you think about the ‘ata’ir and the fara’i’?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever wishes may offer the ‘atirah, and whoever wishes may not offer it; and whoever wishes may offer the fara‘ah, and whoever wishes may not offer it, and in the sheep is its sacrificial offering.”

  18. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7587Sahih

    «الْغُلَامُ مُرْتَهَنٌ بِعَقِيقَتِهِ تُذْبَحُ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ سَابِعِهِ وَيُحْلَقُ رَأْسُهُ وَيُسَمَّى يَوْمَ السَّابِعِ»

    ✧ “The boy is held in pledge by his ‘aqiqah, which is slaughtered on his behalf on his seventh day, and his head is shaved and he is named on the seventh day.”

  19. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7588Sahih

    «عَقَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ يَوْمَ السَّابِعِ وَسَمَّاهُمَا وَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُمَاطَ عَنْ رُءُوسِهِمَا الْأَذَى»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the ‘aqiqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn on the seventh day, named them, and ordered that the harm be removed from their heads.

  20. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7589Abu Dawud silent

    عَقَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بِشَاةٍ وَقَالَ «يَا فَاطِمَةُ احْلِقِي رَأْسَهُ وَتَصَدَّقِي بِزِنَةِ شَعْرِهِ» فَوَزَنَّاهُ فَكَانَ وَزْنُهُ دِرْهَمًاسكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the ‘aqiqah for al-Husayn with a sheep and said, “O Fatimah, shave his head and give charity equal to the weight of his hair.” So we weighed it, and its weight was a dirham. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.

  21. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7590Weak

    «أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ عَقَّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ كُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا كَبْشَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ مِثْلَيْنِ مُتَكَافِئَيْنِ» سوار أبو حمزة ضعيف

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ performed the ‘aqiqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, two similar, equal rams for each of them. Suwar Abu Hamzah is weak.

    «أَقِرُّوا الطَّيْرَ عَلَى مَكِنَاتِهَا»

    ✧ “Let the birds stay in their nests.”

  23. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7592Sahih

    سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْعَقِيقَةِ فَقَالَ «لَا أُحِبُّ الْعُقُوقَ مَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُ مِنْكُمْ مَوْلُودٌ فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ يُنْسِكَ عَنْهُ فَلْيَفْعَلْ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the ‘aqiqah. He said, “I do not like disobedience. Whoever among you has a child born, and I would like him to offer a sacrifice on his behalf, let him do so: for a boy, two sheep; and for a girl, one sheep.”

  24. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7593Sahih

    «إِنَّ مَعَ الْغُلَامِ عَقِيقَةً فَأَهْرِيقُوا عَنْهُ دَمًا وَأَمِيطُوا عَنْهُ الْأَذَى»

    ✧ “With a boy there is an ‘aqiqah, so shed blood on his behalf and remove the harm from him.”

  25. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7594Sahih

    «كُنَّا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ إِذَا وُلِدَ لَنَا غُلَامٌ ذَبَحْنَا عَنْهُ شَاةً وَحَلَقْنَا رَأْسَهُ وَلَطَّخْنَا رَأْسَهُ بِدَمِهَا فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْإِسْلَامُ كُنَّا إِذَا وُلِدَ لَنَا غُلَامٌ ذَبَحْنَا عَنْهُ شَاةً وَحَلَقْنَا رَأْسَهُ وَلَطَّخْنَا رَأْسَهُ بِزَعْفَرَانٍ»

    ✧ “In the pre-Islamic era, when a boy was born to us, we would slaughter a sheep for him, shave his head, and smear his head with its blood. When Islam came, when a boy was born to us, we would slaughter a sheep for him, shave his head, and smear his head with saffron.”

  26. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7595Sahih

    وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ تُقْطَعُ جُدُولًا وَلَا يُكْسَرَ لَهَا عَظْمٌ فَيَأْكُلُ وَيُطْعِمُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ وَلْيَكُنْ ذَاكَ يَوْمَ السَّابِعِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَفِي أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَفِي إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ»

    ✧ “And for a girl, one sheep. It is cut into joints, and no bone of it is broken. He eats, feeds others, and gives charity. Let that be on the seventh day; if not, then on the fourteenth; if not, then on the twenty-first.”

  27. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7596Sahih

    وُلِدَ لِي غُلَامٌ فَبُشِّرْتُ بِهِ وَأَنَا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ وَدِدْتُ لَكُمْ مَكَانَهُ قَصْعَةً مِنْ خُبْزٍ وَلَحْمٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنْ قُلْتَ ذَاكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَمَبْخَلَةٌ مَجْبَنَةٌ مَحْزَنَةٌ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَثَمَرَةُ الْقُلُوبِ وَقُرَّةُ الْعَيْنِ»

    ✧ A boy was born to me, and I was given the good news while I was with the Prophet ﷺ. I said, “I wish that in his place you had a bowl of bread and meat.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If you say that, indeed they are a cause of miserliness, cowardice, and grief, and indeed they are the fruit of the hearts and the coolness of the eyes.”

  28. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7597Sahih

    «مَا قُطِعَ مِنَ الْبَهِيمَةِ وَهِيَ حَيَّةٌ فَهُوَ مَيِّتٌ»

    ✧ “Whatever is cut from an animal while it is alive is dead meat.”

  29. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7598Sahih

    أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سُئِلَ عَنْ جِبَابِ أَسْنِمَةِ الْإِبِلِ وأَلْيَاتِ الْغَنَمِ وَقَالَ «مَا قُطِعَ مِنْ حَيٍّ فَهُوَ مَيِّتٌ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about cutting off the humps of camels and the fat tails of sheep. He said, “Whatever is cut from a living animal is dead meat.”

  30. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 7599Sahih

    كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ وَمَرَرْنَا بِشَجَرَةٍ فِيهَا فَرْخَا حُمَّرَةٍ فَأَخَذْنَاهُمَا قَالَ فَجَاءَتِ الْحُمَّرَةُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَهِيَ تَصِيحُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «مَنْ فَجَعَ هَذِهِ بِفَرْخَيْهَا؟» قَالَ فَقُلْنَا نَحْنُ قَالَ «فَرُدُّوهُمَا»

    ✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey and passed by a tree containing two chicks of a small red bird. We took them. He said: The small red bird came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ crying out. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Who has distressed this one by taking her chicks?” He said: We said, “We did.” He said, “Return them.”

    قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا نَصِيدُ الصَّيْدَ فَلَا نَجِدُ سِكِّينًا إِلَّا الظِّرَارَ وَشِقَّةَ الْعَصَا فَقَالَ «أَمِرَّ الدَّمَ بِمَا شِئْتَ وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ﷻ»

    ✧ I said, “O Messenger of Allah, we hunt game but find no knife except flint and a split stick.” He said, “Let the blood flow with whatever you wish, and mention the name of Allah ﷻ.”
