✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with 'Ali b. Abi Talib, and I noticed some roughness from him. When I returned, I complained about him to the Prophet ﷺ. He raised his head and said: 'O Buraydah, whoever I am his mawla, then 'Ali is his mawla.'

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on a military expedition and appointed ʿAlī ؓ as our commander. When we returned, he said: "How did you find your companion?" He said: Either I complained about him or someone else complained about him. He said: I raised my head, for I was a man who kept his head lowered, and behold, the Prophet ﷺ's face had reddened and he was saying: "Whoever I am the guardian of, ʿAlī is his guardian." So I said: "I will never upset you regarding him again."

✧ Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a commander or appointed a commander over a military expedition or army, he would instruct him and counsel him personally to fear Allah and to treat well those Muslims with him. Then he would say: "Raid in the name of Allah and in the path of Allah. Fight those who disbelieve in Allah. Raid, but do not embezzle spoils, do not act treacherously, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child. When you meet your enemy from the polytheists, call them to one of three traits or qualities. Whichever of them they respond to, accept from them and refrain from them. Call them to Islam; if they respond, accept from them and refrain from them. Then call them to emigrate from their land to the land of the emigrants, and inform them that if they do so, they will have what the emigrants have and bear what the emigrants bear. If they refuse to leave their land, inform them that they will be like the Bedouin Muslims, subject to the judgment of Allah that applies to the Muslims, and they will have no share in the fayʾ or the spoils. If they refuse, then ask them for the jizyah; if they accept, accept from them and leave them alone. If they refuse, then fight them. When you besiege the people of a fortress and they ask you to grant them the protection of Allah and His Messenger, do not grant them the protection of Allah and His Messenger, but grant them your protection, the protection of your father, and the protections of your companions. For if you violate your protections and those of your companions, it is lighter than violating the protection of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. When you besiege the people of a fortress and they ask you to bring them down according to the judgment of Allah, do not bring them down according to the judgment of Allah, but bring them down according to your judgment; for you do not know whether you will hit the judgment of Allah regarding them or not."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I will surely give the banner tomorrow to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love." When the next day came, he called Ali ؓ and handed it to him while he was suffering from eye inflammation. He spat into his eye, gave him the banner, and the people set out with him. He came to the people of Khaybar, and there was Marhab reciting war poetry before them, saying: "Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, armed with weapons, a tested hero; sometimes I thrust and sometimes I strike when swords advance blazing." He and Ali ؓ exchanged two blows, and Ali ؓ struck him on the crown of his head so that the sword bit into his molars. The people of the army heard the sound of his blow, and the last of the people had not yet joined when the first of them was already victorious.

✧ A group of people said to ʿAli ؓ, “If only you would propose to Fatimah ؓ.” He went to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “What is ʿAli’s need?” He said, “I have mentioned Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said, “Welcome and greetings.” He did not add anything to those two words. So ʿAli ؓ went out to those people who were waiting for him. They said, “What do you have?” He said, “I do not know, except that he said to me, ‘Welcome and greetings.’” They said, “That is enough for you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: he granted you the family and he granted you the welcome.” Later, when some time had passed, he married him to her. He said, “O ʿAli, a wedding must have a feast.” Saʿd said, “I have a ram,” and he gathered a group from the Ansar. On the wedding night, he said, “O ʿAli, do not do anything until you meet me.” The Prophet ﷺ called for water, performed ablution with it, then poured the remaining water over ʿAli ؓ and said, “O Allah, bless them both and bless for them their two cubs (children).”
