✧ On the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped in the presence of the people of Khaybar. He gave the banner to Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ, and those who went with him from the people advanced. They met the people of Khaybar, and Umar ؓ and his companions were exposed, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his companions accusing him of cowardice, and he accusing his companions of cowardice. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I will surely give the banner tomorrow to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love." When the next day came, he called Ali ؓ and handed it to him while he was suffering from eye inflammation. He spat into his eye, gave him the banner, and the people set out with him. He came to the people of Khaybar, and there was Marhab reciting war poetry before them, saying: "Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, armed with weapons, a tested hero; sometimes I thrust and sometimes I strike when swords advance blazing." He and Ali ؓ exchanged two blows, and Ali ؓ struck him on the crown of his head so that the sword bit into his molars. The people of the army heard the sound of his blow, and the last of the people had not yet joined when the first of them was already victorious.
