✧ Mu'adh b. Jabal ؓ was in a group of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. A man passed by them and asked them, so they answered him. Then he came to Mu'adh ؓ while he had placed his head on his saddle talking to himself. He said: "What did you ask them about?" He said: "I asked them about such-and-such, so they said such-and-such; and I asked them about such-and-such, so they said such-and-such." Mu'adh ؓ said: "Two phrases: if you adopt them, you will have adopted the best of what they said, and if you abandon them, you will have abandoned the best of what they said. If you begin with your share of this world, your share of the Hereafter will elude you, and perhaps you will not attain between them what you want. But if you begin with your share of the Hereafter, it will pass by your share of this world and arrange it for you in an orderly manner, then it will revolve with you wherever you turn."

✧ "Do not forget the two great things." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are the two great things?" He ﷺ said: "Paradise and the Fire." Then he mentioned what he mentioned until he wept, so that tears flowed—or tears moistened—the sides of his beard ﷺ. Then he said: "By Him in whose hand is Muhammad's soul, if you knew of the matter what I know, you would go out to the open ground and pour dust on your heads."

✧ When the emigrants by sea returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: "Will you not tell us of the wonders you saw in the land of Abyssinia?" Some young men among them said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah. While we were sitting, an old woman from their monks passed by carrying a water jar on her head. She passed by a young man from among them, and he placed one of his hands between her shoulders, so she fell on her knees and her jar broke. When she rose, she turned to him and said: 'You will know, O treacherous one, when Allah the Exalted sets up the Footstool and gathers the first and the last, and the hands and feet speak of what they used to earn—you will know how my affair and your affair will be before Him tomorrow.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. How can Allah sanctify a people from whose strong the weak do not receive justice?"

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ was in my house and had a tooth-stick in his hand. He called for a young servant of his or hers until anger became apparent on the face of the Prophet ﷺ. Umm Salamah ؓ went out to the neighbors and found the servant girl playing among them. She said, "Do I not see you playing with this lamb while his Messenger ﷺ is calling you?" She said, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I did not hear you."
