The Messenger of Allah ﷺ retired to the mosque. He heard them (the people) reciting the Qur'an in a loud voice. He removed the curtain and said: Lo! every one of you is calling his Lord quietly. One should not trouble the other and one should not raise the voice in recitation or in prayer over the voice of the other. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1332)

This Qur'an has slipped from my chest, and I find that I cannot hold onto it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “O Abu al-Hasan, shall I not teach you words by which Allah will benefit you and benefit those you teach, and which will fix what you have learned in your chest?” He said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, teach me.” He said, “When it is Friday night, if you are able to stand in the last third of the night, for it is a witnessed hour and supplication in it is answered—and it is the saying of my brother Yaʿqub to his sons: ‘I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord’—until Friday night comes. If you cannot, then stand in its middle; if you cannot, then stand in its beginning. Then pray four rak'ahs. In the first, recite the Opening of the Book and Surah Yasin; in the second rak'ah, the Opening of the Book and Alif Lam Mim Tanzil al-Sajdah; in the third rak'ah, the Opening of the Book and Ha Mim al-Dukhan; and in the fourth rak'ah, the Opening of the Book and Tabarak al-Mufassal. When you finish the tashahhud, praise Allah, extol Allah with the best praise, send blessings upon me and upon all the prophets, praise well, seek forgiveness for your brothers who preceded you in faith, and seek forgiveness for the believing men and the believing women. Then say at the end of that: ‘O Allah, have mercy on me by enabling me to abandon sins forever as long as You keep me alive; have mercy on me from burdening myself with what does not concern me; and grant me good insight into what pleases You from me. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of majesty and honor and might that cannot be rivaled, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your majesty and the light of Your face, to make my heart cling to memorizing Your Book as You taught me, and to enable me to recite it in the manner that pleases You from me. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of majesty and honor and might that cannot be rivaled, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your majesty and the light of Your face, to illuminate my sight with Your Book, release my tongue through it, dispel distress from my heart through it, expand my chest through it, and occupy my body with it. For none helps me upon the truth except You, and none grants it except You, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.’ Do this, Abu al-Hasan, for three Fridays, or five, or seven, and you will be answered by Allah's permission. By the One who sent me with the truth, it never fails a believer.” ʿAbdullah b. ʿAbbas said, “By Allah, ʿAli did not tarry except five or seven nights before he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a similar gathering and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, previously I would not learn four verses or so without them slipping away when I recited them to myself. But today I learn forty verses or so, and when I recite them to myself, it is as if the Book of Allah is before my eyes. I used to hear a hadith and it would slip away when I wanted it, but today I hear hadiths and when I narrate them, I do not omit a single letter.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him then, ‘A believer, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah, O Abu al-Hasan.’”
