5. the Two ʿĪd Ṣalāhs

    كَانَ عَلِيٌّ «يُكَبِّرُ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ غَدَاةَ عَرَفَةَ ثُمَّ لَا يَقْطَعُ حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَ الْإِمَامُ مِنْ آخِرِ أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ»

    ✧ ʿAlī used to say takbīr after the dawn prayer on the morning of ʿArafah, then he would not stop until the imam prayed on the last of the days of Tashrīq, then he would say takbīr after ʿAṣr.

    ✧ He used to say takbīr from the morning of ʿArafah until the ʿAṣr prayer on the last of the days of Tashrīq.

    ✧ Ibn Masʿūd came to us, and he used to say the takbīr from the dawn prayer on the day of ʿArafah until the afternoon prayer on the last of the days of tashrīq.

    وَسُئِلَ عَنِ التَّكْبِيرِ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ فَقَالَ «يُكَبَّرُ مِنْ غَدَاةِ عَرَفَةَ إِلَى آخِرِ أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ كَمَا كَبَّرَ عَلِيٌّ وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ»

    ✧ He was asked about the takbīr on the day of ʿArafah, and he said: 'The takbīr is said from the morning of ʿArafah until the last of the days of tashrīq, as ʿAlī and ʿAbdullāh said the takbīr.'

    «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَا يَخْرُجُ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ حَتَّى يَطْعَمَ وَلَا يَطْعَمُ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ»

    ✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not go out on the day of fiṭr until he had eaten, and he would not eat on the day of naḥr until he returned."

    «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُفْطِرُ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ عَلَى تَمَرَاتٍ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَغْدُوَ»

    ✧ "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would break his fast on the day of fiṭr with some dates before going out."

    سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا يَقُولُ «مَا خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ فِطْرٍ حَتَّى يَأْكُلَ تَمَرَاتٍ ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ سَبْعًا أَوْ أَقَلَّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وِتْرًا» سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

    ✧ I heard Anas say: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not go out on the day of Fitr until he had eaten three dates, or five, or seven, or fewer than that, or more than that, an odd number.” Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.

  8. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1091Sahih

    قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَلَهُمْ يَوْمَانِ يَلْعَبُونَ فِيهِمَا فَقَالَ «مَا هَذَانِ الْيَوْمَانِ؟» قَالُوا يَوْمَانِ كُنَّا نَلْعَبُ فِيهِمَا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَبْدَلَكُمْ بِهِمَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُمَا يَوْمَ الْأَضْحَى وَيَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah while they had two days on which they played. He said: “What are these two days?” They said: “Two days on which we used to play in the Jahiliyyah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed Allah has replaced them for you with two better than them: the day of Adha and the day of Fitr.”

    خَرَجَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُسْرٍ صَاحِبُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مَعَ النَّاسِ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدِ فِطْرٍ أَوْ أَضْحًى فَأَنْكَرَ إِبْطَاءَ الْإِمَامِ وَقَالَ إِنَّا كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَدْ فَرَغْنَا سَاعَتَنَا هَذِهِ وَذَلِكَ حِينَ التَّسْبِيحُ

    ✧ Abdullah b. Busr, the Companion of the Prophet ﷺ, went out with the people on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Adha and objected to the imam's lateness, saying: “We were with the Prophet ﷺ and had finished by this hour of ours, and that was at the time of glorification.”

    شَهِدْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْعِيدَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ «إِنَّا نَخْطُبُ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ لِلْخُطْبَةِ فَلْيَجْلِسْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ فَلْيَذْهَبْ» هَذَا «حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» وَهُوَ مَعْنَى الْحَدِيثِ الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ عَنْهُ فِي الْأَعْيَادِ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ على شرط الشيخين

    ✧ I attended the Eid prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when he finished the prayer he said: “We shall deliver the sermon, so whoever wishes to sit for the sermon, let him sit, and whoever wishes to leave, let him leave.” This is a sahih hadith according to the conditions of the two shaykhs but they did not include it. It is the meaning of the hadith that is asked about regarding the Eids, except that it is from Ibn Abbas according to the conditions of the two shaykhs.

    أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا يَحْيَى عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ التَّيْمِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّهُمْ أَصَابَهُمْ مَطَرٌ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ «فَصَلَّى بِهِمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْعِيدَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ» هَذَا «حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ» أَبُو يَحْيَى التَّيْمِيُّ صَدُوقٌ إِنَّمَا الْمَجْرُوحُ يَحْيَى بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنُهُ على شرطهما

    ✧ He heard Abu Yahya Ubayd Allah al-Taymi narrate from Abu Hurayrah that rain fell on them on a day of Eid, “so the Prophet ﷺ led them in the Eid prayer in the mosque.” This hadith has a sahih chain but they did not include it. Abu Yahya al-Taymi is truthful; only his son Yahya b. Ubayd Allah is criticized, according to their conditions.

    أَنَّهُ «خَرَجَ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ قَبْلَهَا وَلَا بَعْدَهَا» «وَذَكَرَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَعَلَهُ»

    ✧ He went out on a day of Eid to the prayer place and did not pray before it or after it, and he mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ did that.

  13. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1096Sahih

    «أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ صَلَّى قَبْلَ الْخُطْبَةِ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدٍ» هَذَا لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَةَ وَفِي حَدِيثِ سُلَيْمَانَ تَقْصِيرٌ

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ prayed before the sermon on a day of Eid. This is the wording of the hadith of Ahmad b. Abdah, and in the hadith of Sulayman there is some omission.

    شَهِدْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ بِمَكَّةَ وَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ فَوَافَقَ يَوْمَ فِطْرٍ أَوْ أَضْحًى يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ «فَأَخَّرَ الْخُرُوجَ حَتَّى ارْتَفَعَ النَّهَارُ فَخَرَجَ وَصَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ فَخَطَبَ وَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ الْجُمُعَةَ» فَعَاتَبَهُ عَلَيْهِ نَاسٌ مِنْ بَنِي أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ أَصَابَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ السُّنَّةَ فَبَلَغَ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقَالَ «رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ إِذَا اجْتَمَعَ عِيدَانِ صَنَعَ مِثْلَ هَذَا»

    ✧ I witnessed Ibn al-Zubayr in Mecca while he was the emir, and it happened to be either the day of Fitr or Adha coinciding with a Friday. He delayed going out until the day had risen high, then he went out and ascended the pulpit, delivered a lengthy sermon, and then performed two rak'ahs (units of prayer) and did not perform the Friday prayer. Some people from Banu Umayya ibn Abd Shams reproached him for this. When Ibn Abbas heard about it, he said, "Ibn al-Zubayr has followed the Sunnah." When Ibn al-Zubayr heard about Ibn Abbas's comment, he said, "I saw Umar ibn al-Khattab do the same thing when both Eids coincided."

    «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَخَذَ يَوْمَ عِيدٍ فِي طَرِيقٍ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فِي طَرِيقٍ آخَرَ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took one route on a day of Eid and then returned by another route.

  16. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1099Sahih

    «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ إِلَى الْعِيدَيْنِ رَجَعَ فِي غَيْرِ الطَّرِيقِ الَّذِي خَرَجَ فِيهِ»

    ✧ Whenever the Prophet ﷺ went out to the two Eid prayers, he would return by a route different from the one he took going out.

    «كُنْتُ أَغْدُو مَعَ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ فَنَسْلُكُ بَطْنَ بُطْحَانَ حَتَّى نَأْتِيَ الْمُصَلَّى فَنُصَلِّيَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ثُمَّ نَرْجِعَ إِلَى بُيُوتِنَا»

    ✧ I used to go early with the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the prayer place on the day of Fitr, and we would travel through the middle of Buthan until we came to the prayer place, then we would pray with the Prophet ﷺ, then we would return to our homes.

  18. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1101Sahih

    كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَخْرُجُ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ فَيُصَلِّي تَيْنِكَ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيَسْتَقْبِلُ النَّاسَ وَهُمْ جُلُوسٌ فَيَقُولُ «تَصَدَّقُوا تَصَدَّقُوا» فَكَانَ أَكْثَرَ مَنْ يَتَصَدَّقُ النِّسَاءُ بِالْقُرْطِ وَالْخَاتَمِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would go out on the day of Fitr and pray those two rak’ahs, then say the taslim, then stand and face the people while they were seated, and say: “Give charity, give charity.” The majority of those who gave charity were women, with earrings and rings.

  19. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1102Sahih

    «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا رَجَعَ مِنَ الْمُصَلَّى صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ» هَذِهِ سُنَّةٌ عَزِيزَةٌ بِإِسْنَادٍ صَحِيحٍ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ صحيح

    ✧ Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the prayer place, he would pray two rak’ahs. This is a rare sunnah with a sahih chain, but they did not include it. Sahih.

  20. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1103Sahih

    أَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ صِيَامًا لِتَمَامِ ثَلَاثِينَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلَانِ فَشَهِدَا أَنَّهُمَا رَأَيَا الْهِلَالَ بِالْأَمْسِ «فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ النَّاسَ فَأَفْطِرُوا»

    ✧ The people began the day fasting to complete thirty, then two men came and testified that they had seen the crescent the previous day, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded the people, and they broke their fast.

  21. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1104Sahih

    جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَبْصَرْتُ الْهِلَالَ اللَّيْلَةَ فَقَالَ «أَتَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ؟» فَقَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ «قُمْ يَا بِلَالُ فَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ فَلْيَصُومُوا» قَدِ احْتَجَّ الْبُخَارِيُّ بِعِكْرِمَةَ وَاحْتَجَّ مُسْلِمٌ بِسِمَاكٍ «وَ

    ✧ A bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'I saw the crescent tonight.' He said, 'Do you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Arise, O Bilal, and announce to the people that they should fast.' Al-Bukhari used ʿIkrimah as evidence, and Muslim used Simāk.

    كَانَ يُكَبِّرُ يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ مِنْ حِينِ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ الْمُصَلَّى»

    ✧ He used to say takbīr on the day of Fiṭr from the time he left his house until he reached the prayer place.

    كَانَ «يَخْرُجُ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَيُكَبِّرُ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ الْمُصَلَّى»

    ✧ He used to go out on the two ʿĪds from the mosque saying takbīr until he reached the prayer place.

    «كَانُوا فِي التَّكْبِيرِ فِي الْفِطْرِ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ فِي الْأَضْحَى»

    ✧ They were more emphatic in takbīr on Fiṭr than on Aḍḥā.

    «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُكَبِّرُ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ سِوَى تَكْبِيرِ الِافْتِتَاحِ وَيَقْرَأُ بِ ق وَالْقُرْآنِ الْمَجِيدِ واقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say twelve takbīrs in the two ʿĪds besides the opening takbīr, and he would recite 'Qāf. By the glorious Qurʾān' and 'The Hour has drawn near'.

    أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُكَبِّرُ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ فِي الْأُولَى سَبْعَ تَكْبِيرَاتٍ وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ خَمْسَ تَكْبِيرَاتٍ قَبْلَ الْقِرَاءَةِ»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to say seven takbīrs in the first rakʿah and five takbīrs in the second before the recitation in the two ʿĪds.

    «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ يُصَلُّونَ الْعِيدَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْخُطْبَةِ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar used to pray the two ʿĪds before the sermon.

  28. al-Mustadrak (al-Hakim) 1111Fabricated

    كَانَ يَجْهَرُ فِي الْمَكْتُوبَاتِ بِبِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَكَانَ يَقْنُتُ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَكَانَ يُكَبِّرُ مِنْ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ صَلَاةَ الْغَدَاةِ وَيَقْطَعُهَا صَلَاةَ الْعَصْرِ آخِرَ أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ»

    ✧ He used to recite aloud 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' in the obligatory prayers, and he used to perform qunūt in the dawn prayer, and he used to say takbīr from the day of ʿArafah at the dawn prayer and stop it at the ʿAṣr prayer on the last of the days of Tashrīq.

    كَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ «يُكَبِّرُ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ مِنْ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ إِلَى صَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ مِنْ آخِرِ أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ»

    ✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb used to say takbīr after the dawn prayer from the day of ʿArafah until the Ẓuhr prayer on the last of the days of Tashrīq.
