When the dust of the animal reached the gathering, Ibn Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said: “Do not raise dust upon us.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ greeted them, then invited them and recited the Qur'an to them. Ibn Ubayy said to him: “Nothing is better than what you say, but do not come to us in our gatherings. Return to your lodging, and whoever comes to you, tell him.” Ibn Rawāḥah said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, come to us in our gatherings, for we love that.” The Muslims and the polytheists began to insult one another until they almost fought. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ calmed them until they fell silent. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded until he entered upon Saʿd b. ʿUbādah and said: “O Saʿd, did you not hear what Abū al-Ḥubāb said?” Then he told him what had happened. Saʿd said: “O Messenger of Allah, pardon him and overlook it. By the One who sent down the Book upon you, Allah has brought you the truth that He sent down upon you. The people of this town had agreed to crown him and tie the headband around his head, but Allah rejected that through the truth He sent down upon you.”

They came to us and asked if any of us could perform Ruqyah (healing recitation). We said yes, so they told us to proceed, but we asked them to give us sheep as compensation for hosting us. Some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet ﷺ ), "Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?" The Prophet's companions said, "You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it." So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. One of them (the Prophet's companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, "We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful)." When they asked him, he smiled and said, "How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5736)

✧ Amir said to him, “I have never seen anything like today, nor a veiled maiden.” Sahl was immediately stricken with a severe fever. He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that Sahl had fallen ill and could not raise his head. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him, and Sahl told him what had happened with Amir. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? Should you not have invoked blessing? The evil eye is real. Perform ablution.” Sahl then went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no harm.

✧ He was struck down, so the Prophet ﷺ was brought and it was said, “Attend to Sahl.” He said, “Whom do you suspect?” They said, “Amir b. Rabi'ah.” He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? Whoever sees something that pleases him should supplicate for blessing.” Then he ordered him to perform ablution, washing his face and hands up to the elbows, and his knees and the inside of his lower garment. Then he ordered him to pour it over him.

✧ By Allah, I have never seen anything like today, nor the skin of a hidden maiden. Sahl was immediately struck down, so they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Will you attend to Sahl b. Hunayf? By Allah, he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you suspect anyone?” They said, “We suspect Amir b. Rabi'ah.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Amir and was angry with him, saying, “Why would one of you kill his brother? Should you not have invoked blessing? Wash for him.” So Amir washed his face, hands, elbows, knees, the ends of his feet, and the inside of his lower garment in a bowl, then poured it over him. Sahl then went with the people with no harm.
