✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no prophet among the prophets but was given signs the like of which caused people to believe in him. What I have been given is a revelation that Allah revealed to me, so I hope to have the most followers on the Day of Resurrection."

✧ Al-Harith b. Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'How does the revelation come to you?' He said, 'Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell, then it leaves me after I have memorized it, and that is the hardest on me. And sometimes the angel comes to me in the form of a young man and delivers it to me.'

✧ The Prophet of Allah ﷺ, when revelation was sent down upon him, would be distressed by that, and his face would change color. One day it was sent down upon him and he experienced that. When it was relieved from him, he said, 'Take it from me: Allah has made a way for them. The previously married for the previously married, and the virgin for the virgin. The previously married is to be given one hundred lashes then stoned with stones, and the virgin is to be given one hundred lashes then exiled for a year.'

✧ I wished to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while revelation was descending upon him. While we were at al-Ji'ranah and the Prophet ﷺ was in a tent, revelation came to him. Umar gestured to me to come, so I put my head into the tent. A man came to him who had entered ihram for Umrah wearing a jubbah and smeared with perfume, and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a man who entered ihram wearing a jubbah?' Then revelation was sent down upon him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to snore because of that. When it was relieved from him, he said, 'Where is the man who asked me just now?' The man was brought to him, and he said, 'As for the jubbah, take it off, and as for the perfume, wash it off.'

✧ I heard Hisham b. Hakim reciting Surah al-Furqan in a way different from how I recited it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taught it to me. I almost rushed at him, but I gave him respite until he finished, then I grabbed him by his cloak and brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Surah al-Furqan in a way different from what you taught me.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Recite.' He recited in the way I had heard him recite. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Thus it was revealed.' Then he said to me, 'Recite.' I recited, and he said, 'Thus it was revealed. ✧ Woe to you! What harm is it to you whichever you recite first? The first thing that was revealed was a surah from the Mufassal containing mention of Paradise and Hell, until when people became steadfast in Islam, the halal and haram were revealed. If the first thing revealed had been 'Do not drink wine,' they would have said, 'We will never give up drinking wine.' If the first thing revealed had been 'Do not commit adultery,' they would have said, 'We will never give up adultery.' It was revealed in Makkah, 'And the Hour is more grievous and more bitter' [al-Qamar 46], while I was a young girl playing around Muhammad ﷺ. Surah al-Baqarah and an-Nisa were not revealed except while I was with him. She said, 'She brought out the mushaf to him and dictated to him the verses of the surahs.'

✧ Hudhayfah came to Uthman while he was fighting the people of Syria together with the people of Iraq in the conquest of Armenia and Azerbaijan. Their differences in the Quran alarmed Hudhayfah, so he said to Uthman, 'O Commander of the Faithful, catch this ummah before they differ about the Book as the Jews and Christians differed.' Uthman sent to Hafsah, saying, 'Send us the suhuf so we may copy them into the masahif, then we will return them to you.' She sent them to him. He commanded Zayd b. Thabit, Abdullah b. al-Zubayr, Sa'id b. al-As, and Abd al-Rahman b. al-Harith b. Hisham to copy the suhuf into the masahif. If they differed with Zayd b. Thabit about something of the Quran, they were to write it in the language of Quraysh, for the Quran was revealed in their language. They did that until they had copied the suhuf into the masahif. Uthman returned the suhuf to Hafsah and sent a mushaf from what they copied to every region.

✧ Abu Bakr sent for me after the killing of the people of Yamamah. I went to him and Umar was with him. He said: Umar came to me and said: "The killing was intense on the day of Yamamah among the reciters of the Qur'an, and I think you should command that the Qur'an be collected." I said: "How can I do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?" Umar said: "By Allah, it is good." He kept urging me until Allah opened my chest to that to which He opened Umar's chest. Then he said: "You are a young, intelligent man and we do not suspect you. You used to write the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so seek out the Qur'an and collect it." I said: How can you two do something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do? Abu Bakr said: "By Allah, it is good." He kept urging me until Allah opened my chest to that to which He opened the chests of Abu Bakr and Umar. By Allah, if they had tasked me with moving a mountain, it would not have been heavier upon me than what they tasked me with. Then I sought out the Qur'an, collecting it from palm stalks, parchments, sheets, and the hearts of men.

✧ Why did you take al-Anfal, which is one of the mathani, and Bara'ah, which is one of the mi'in, and join them together without writing the line 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' between them, and you placed them among the seven long surahs? What led you to do that? 'Uthman said: When something was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would call one of those who wrote for him and say: 'Put this in the surah in which such and such is mentioned.' And when verses were revealed to him, he would say: 'Put these verses in the surah in which such and such is mentioned.' Al-Anfal was among the first of what was revealed in Madinah, and Bara'ah was among the last of the Qur'an, and its story was similar to its story, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away without making clear to us that it was part of it. So I thought it was part of it, and for that reason I joined them together and did not write the line 'Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim' between them.

✧ While I was in Syria, in Homs, I was told: "Recite Surah Yusuf." So I recited it. A man said: "It was not revealed like that." I said: "By Allah, I recited it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: 'You have done well.'" While I was talking to him, I noticed the smell of wine. I said: "You deny the Book of Allah and you drink wine? By Allah, you will not leave until I flog you with the prescribed punishment."

Muhammad, do justice. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Woe be upon thee, who would do justice if I do not do justice, and you would be very unfortunate and a loser if I do not do justice. Upon this Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) said: Permit me to kill this hypocrite. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: May there be protection of Allah!
