كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «يَا عُقْبَةُ قُلْ» فَقُلْتُ مَاذَا أَقُولُ؟ فَسَكَتَ عَنِّي ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا عُقْبَةُ قُلْ» قُلْتُ مَاذَا أَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ فَسَكَتَ عَنِّي فَقُلْتُ اللهُمَّ ارْدُدْهُ عَلَيَّ فَقَالَ «يَا عُقْبَةُ قُلْ» فَقُلْتَ مَاذَا أَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ «قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ» فَقَرَأْتُهَا حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ عَلَى آخِرِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «قُلْ» فَقُلْتُ مَاذَا أَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ فَقَالَ «قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الفَلَقِ» فَقَرَأْتُهَا حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ عَلَى آخِرِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ «مَا سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِمِثْلِهَا وَلَا اسْتَعَاذَ مُسْتَعِيذٌ بِمِثْلِهَا»
✧ I was walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said: "O 'Uqbah, say." I said: "What should I say?" He was silent. Then he said: "O 'Uqbah, say." I said: "What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?" He was silent. I said: "O Allah, make him answer me." Then he said: "O 'Uqbah, say." I said: "What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Say: 'I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak.'" So I recited it until I reached its end. Then he said: "Say." I said: "What should I say, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Say: 'I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak.'" So I recited it until I reached its end. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No one has ever asked with the like of it, and no one has ever sought refuge with the like of it."

أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ رَاكِبٌ فَوَضَعْتُ يَدَيَّ عَلَى قَدَمِهِ فَقُلْتُ أَقْرِئْنِي سُورَةَ هُودٍ أَوْ سُورَةَ يُوسُفَ فَقَالَ «لَنْ تَقْرَأَ شَيْئًا أَبْلَغَ عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ»
✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was riding, and I placed my hands on his foot and said: "Teach me Surah Hud or Surah Yusuf." He said: "You will never recite anything more effective with Allah than 'Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak.'"

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَقْرِئْنِي مِنْ سُورَةِ يُوسُفَ أَوْ سُورَةِ هُودٍ قَالَ «يَا عُقْبَةُ اقْرَأْ بِقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ فَإِنَّكَ لَنْ تَقْرَأَ سُورَةً أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللهِ ﷻ وَأَبْلَغَ عِنْدَهُ مِنْهَا فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ لَا تَفُوتَكَ فَافْعَلْ»
✧ I said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me from Surah Yusuf or Surah Hud." He said: "O 'Uqbah, recite 'Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak,' for you will never recite a surah more beloved to Allah ﷻ and more effective with Him than it. If you can ensure it never misses you, then do so."

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لَهُ «يَا ابْنَ عَابِسٍ أَلَا أَدُلُّكُ» أَوْ قَالَ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِأَفْضَلِ مَا يَتَعَوَّذُ بِهِ الْمُتَعَوِّذُونَ؟» قَالَ بَلَى يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ «قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ هَاتَانِ السُّورَتَانِ»
✧ He informed him that the Prophet ﷺ said to him: "O Ibn 'Abis, shall I not guide you—or shall I not inform you—of the best with which those who seek refuge seek refuge?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Say: 'I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak,' and say: 'I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind.' These two surahs."

أَهْدَيْتُ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ بَغْلَةً شَهْبَاءَ فَرَكِبَهَا فَأَخَذَ عُقْبَةُ يَقُودُهَا بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِعُقْبَةَ «اقْرَأْ» قَالَ وَمَا أَقْرَأُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «اقْرَأْ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقْ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ» فَأَعَادَهَا عَلَيَّ حَتَّى قَرَأْتُهَا فَعَرَفَ أَنِّي لَمْ أَفْرَحْ بِهَا جِدًّا فَقَالَ «لَعَلَّكَ تَهَاوَنْتَ بِهَا فَمَا قُمْتُ تُصَلِّي بِمِثْلِهَا»
✧ I gave the Prophet ﷺ a gray mule as a gift, and he rode it. 'Uqbah took hold of it, leading him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to 'Uqbah: "Recite." He said: "What should I recite, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Recite: 'Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak from the evil of what He created.'" He repeated it to me until I recited it, and he perceived that I was not very pleased with it. He said: "Perhaps you have taken it lightly. You have never stood in prayer with the like of it."

بَيْنَمَا أَنَا أَقُودُ بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي نَقَبٍ مِنْ تِيكَ النِّقَابِ إِذْ قَالَ «أَلَا تَرْكَبُ يَا عُقْبُ؟» فَأَجْلَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ أَرْكَبَ مَرْكَبَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَلَا تَرْكَبُ يَا عُقْبُ؟» فَأَشْفَقْتُ أَنْ تَكُونَ مَعْصِيَةً فَنَزَلَ وَرَكِبْتُ هُنَيْهَةً ثُمَّ نَزَلَتْ وَرَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ سُورَتَيْنِ مِنْ خَيْرِ سُورَتَيْنِ قَرَأَتْهُمَا النَّاسُ؟» فَأَقْرَأَنِي قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ وَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَتَقَدَّمَ فَقَرَأَ بِهِمَا ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِي فَقَالَ «كَيْفَ رَأَيْتَ يَا عُقْبُ؟ اقْرَأْ بِهِمَا كُلَّمَا نِمْتَ وَقُمْتَ»
✧ While I was leading the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through one of those mountain passes, he said: "Will you not ride, O 'Uqbah?" I felt too much awe for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to ride on the mount of the Messenger of Allah. Then he said: "Will you not ride, O 'Uqbah?" I feared that it might be disobedience, so he dismounted and I rode for a short while. Then I dismounted and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode. Then he said: "Shall I not teach you two surahs from the best two surahs that people recite?" He taught me: "Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak," and "Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind." Then the prayer was called, and he went forward and recited them. Then he passed by me and said: "How did you find it, O 'Uqbah? Recite them whenever you sleep and whenever you rise."

✧ I heard 'Uqbah b. 'Amir say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the two refuge surahs in prayer." And he said to me: "Recite them whenever you sleep and whenever you rise."

✧ That the Messenger of God ﷺ placed his hand on his chest, then said, "Say." He said: I did not know what to say. Then he said to me, "Say." I said: Say: He is God, the One. Then he said to me, "Say." He said: I said: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak from the evil of what He created, until I finished. Then he said to me, "Say." He said: I said: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, until I finished it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Thus seek refuge, for those who seek refuge have never sought refuge with the like of these." Abridged. Abu Abd al-Rahman said: This is an error.

✧ While I was leading the Messenger of God's ﷺ riding camel in a military expedition, he said, "O Uqbah, say." He said: I listened. Then he said, "O Uqbah, say." I listened. He said it a third time, so I said: What should I say? He said, "Say: He is God, the One." He recited the surah until he completed it. Then he recited, "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak," and I recited with him until he completed it. Then he recited, "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind," and I recited with him until he completed it. Then he said, "No one has sought refuge with the like of these."

✧ I was leading the Messenger of God's ﷺ she-camel during travel. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "O Uqbah, shall I not teach you the best two surahs that have been recited?" He taught me: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, and Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. He did not see me very pleased with them. When he dismounted for the morning prayer, he recited them in the morning prayer for the people. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished the prayer, he turned to me and said, "O Uqbah, how did you find it?"

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me, "O Uqbah, say." I said: What should I say? He said: Say: He is God, the One. Then he said: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. The Messenger of God ﷺ recited them, then said, "The people have not sought refuge with the like of these," or "The people do not seek refuge with the like of these."

«كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَتَعَوَّذُ مِنْ عَيْنِ الْإِنْسَانِ وَعَيْنِ الْجَانِّ حَتَّى نَزَلَتِ الْمُعَوِّذَتَانِ فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتَا أَخَذَ بِهِمَا وَتَرَكَ مَا سِوَاهُمَا»
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ used to seek refuge from the evil eye of humans and the evil eye of jinn until the two refuge-seeking surahs were revealed. When they were revealed, he adopted them and abandoned everything else.

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me, "Recite, O Jabir." I said: What should I recite, may my father and mother be your ransom? He said: Recite: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, and Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind. I recited them, and he said, "Recite them, for you will never recite anything like them."

✧ On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said: "Verses were sent down to me the like of which have never been seen: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind to the end of the surah, and Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak to the end of the surah."

كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي طَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ فَأَصَبْتُ خُلْوَةً مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ لِي «قُلْ» فَقُلْتُ مَا أَقُولُ؟ قَالَ «قُلْ» قُلْتُ مَا أَقُولُ؟ قَالَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ حَتَّى خَتَمَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ حَتَّى خَتَمَهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي «مَا تَعَوَّذَ النَّاسُ بِأَفْضَلَ مِنْهُمَا»
✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the road to Makkah, and I found an opportunity to be alone with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I drew near to him. He said to me, "Say." I said, "What should I say?" He said, "Say." I said, "What should I say?" He said, "Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak'" until he completed it. Then he said, "Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind'" until he completed it. Then he said to me, "The people have never sought refuge with anything better than these two."

كَانَ فِي مَسِيرٍ وَفِي الظُّهْرِ قِلَّةٌ وَالنَّاسُ يَعْتَقِبُونَ فَحَانَتْ نَزْلَةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَزْلَتِي فَلَحِقَنِي مِنْ بَعْدِي فَضَرَبَ مَنْكِبَيَّ وَقَالَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ فَقُلْتُ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ فَقَرَأَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَرَأْتُهَا مَعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الناس فَقَرَأَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَرَأْتُهَا معه فقال «إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ فَاقْرَأْ بِهِمَا؛ فَإِنَّكَ لَنْ تَقْرَأَ بِمِثْلِهِمَا»
✧ He was on a journey, and at noon there was a lull, and the people were taking turns riding. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ's turn to dismount and my turn to dismount came. He caught up with me from behind and tapped my shoulder, saying, "Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.'" So I said, "Say: 'I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.'" ✧ A light rain and darkness overtook us, so we waited for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to lead us in prayer. Then he mentioned words whose meaning was: He came out and said, "Say." I said, "What should I say?" He said, "{Say: He is Allah, the One} [al-Ikhlas 1] and the two refuge-seeking surahs, in the evening and the morning, three times; they will suffice you against everything."

I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of every lion, black serpent, snake, scorpion, and from the inhabitant of the land, and from the evil of a parent and what he begot."

O Allah, grant my soul its piety; You are the best to purify it; You are its guardian and its master. Maymun al-Awdi: Sa'd used to teach his children these words just as a teacher teaches boys to write, and he would say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge from them after the prayer: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from being returned to the worst age, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave." So I narrated it to Mus'ab and he confirmed it.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Talhah: “Find for us a boy from among your boys to serve me.” Abu Talhah went out, riding me behind him, and I used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whenever he stopped. I used to hear him frequently say: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry, sorrow, incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, the burden of debt, and the domination of men.”

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, he said: “The master of seeking forgiveness is for a servant to say: 'O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I uphold Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.' If he says it in the morning with certainty and then dies, he will enter Paradise. And if he says it in the evening with certainty and then dies, he will enter Paradise.” Al-Walid b. Tha'labah differed from him.

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ» وَذَكَرَ الدُّعَاءَ وَقَالَ فِي آخِرِهِ «وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي» يَعْنِي بِذَلِكَ الْخَسْفَ قَالَ النَّسَائِيُّ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ لَا أَعْرِفُهُ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ نَسَبُهُ إِلَى جَدِّهِ خَالَفَهُ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "O Allah," and he mentioned the supplication and said at the end, "And I seek refuge in You from being assassinated from beneath me." This means he sought protection from earthquakes. An-Nasai said: 'Ali ibn 'Abdul-'Aziz disagreed, saying that he did not know who this narration ties back to, but it is more likely to be traced back to his grandfather. Abu Nu'aim disagreed with him.

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Your greatness from being swallowed up from beneath me." It was abridged. Jubayr said, "It means being swallowed by the earth." ʿUbādah said, "I do not know whether it is the statement of the Prophet ﷺ or of Jubayr."

طَلَبْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فِي فِرَاشِي فَلَمْ أُصِبْهُ فَضَرَبْتُ بِيَدِي عَلَى رَأْسِ الْفِرَاشِ فَوَقَعَتْ يَدِي عَلَى أُخْمُصِ قَدَمَيْهِ فَإِذَا هُوَ سَاجِدٌ يَقُولُ «أَعُوذُ بِعَفْوِكَ مِنْ عِقَابِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ»
✧ One night I looked for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in my bed and did not find him. I felt with my hand on the top of the bed and my hand fell on the soles of his feet. He was prostrating, saying: "I seek refuge in Your pardon from Your punishment. I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath. I seek refuge in You from You."

✧ I asked ʿĀʾishah about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to open the night prayer with. She said, "You have asked me about something no one has asked me about. He used to say 'Allahu akbar' ten times, praise Allah ten times, glorify Allah ten times, and seek forgiveness ten times. Then he would say: 'O Allah, forgive me, guide me, provide for me, and grant me well-being.' And he would seek refuge from the constraints of the standing on the Day of Resurrection."
