al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2928

✧ Expiation for illness, reward of the sick, and that the believer is afflicted so his reward may increase

وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبَّادُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ:

« مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يُصَابُ بِمُصِيبَةٍ، فَيَذْكُرُ مُصِيبَتَهُ بَعْدَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً، فَيُحْدِثُ لَهَا اسْتِرْجَاعًا، إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ اللهُ مِنَ الْأَجْرِ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ مِثْلَمَا أُعْطِيَ يَوْمَ أُصِيبَ

Translation

✧ "There is no Muslim who is afflicted with a calamity, and then remembers his calamity after forty years and renews his istirja' (saying 'Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return'), except that Allah gives him at that moment the like of the reward he was given on the day he was afflicted."
