al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2919

✧ Expiation for illness, reward of the sick, and that the believer is afflicted so his reward may increase

وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ هُوَ ابْنُ أَرْطَاةَ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ سُحَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ:

« إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَتَكُونُ لَهُ الدَّرَجَةُ عِنْدَ اللهِ تَعَالَى، فَمَا يَبْلُغُهَا بِعَمَلٍ حَتَّى يُبْتَلَى فِي جَسَدِهِ، فَيَبْلُغُهَا بِذَلِكَ الْبَلَاءِ

✧ A man may have a rank with Allah Almighty that he does not attain by deeds until he is afflicted in his body, and thus he attains it through that affliction.
