al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2921

✧ Expiation for illness, reward of the sick, and that the believer is afflicted so his reward may increase

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَشْعَثُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ بَعْضِ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؓ، قَالَ:

اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَاشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا أَفَاقَ، قُلْتُ: لَوْ أَنَّ إِحْدَانَا فَعَلَتْ هَذَا خَشِيتُ عَلَيْهَا، فَقَالَ ﷺ: « أَوَلَا تَعْلَمِينَ أَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يُشَدَّدُ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ وَجَعِهِ لِيُحَطَّ عَنْهُ مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill and it became severe for him. When he recovered, I said: “If any one of us did this, I would fear for her.” He ﷺ said: “Do you not know that the believer is afflicted severely in his pain so that his sins may be removed from him?”
