✧ I was a man of great effort in worship, then I married. My father came to the woman and said to her: "How do you find your husband?" She said: "What a good man he is, from a good man. He does not sleep and he does not break his fast." Then there occurred between me and my father [a dispute]. He said: "I married you to a Muslim woman, and you did to her what you did?" I did not care what he said, because of the strength I found, until that reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "But I sleep and pray, and I fast and break my fast. So fast, pray, sleep, and stand in prayer. Fast three days every month." I said: "I am stronger than that." He said: "Then fast the fasting of Dawud ﷺ: fast one day and break your fast one day, and read the Quran once every month." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am stronger than that." He said: "Read it in fifteen days." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am stronger than that." He kept reducing until he reached seven. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Every deed has a period of enthusiasm, and every enthusiasm has a period of slackness. Whoever's slackness is toward my Sunnah has been guided, and whoever's slackness is toward other than that has perished." Abdullah b. Amr said, when he grew old and weak: "If I had accepted the concession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it would be more beloved to me than my family and my wealth."

✧ My father married me to a woman from Quraysh. When she entered upon me, I think he said: I did not turn to her, or I did not pay attention to her, because of the worship I was engaged in, of fasting and prayer. Amr b. al-As entered upon her and said to her: "How did you find your husband?" She said: "Like the best of men, and like the best of husbands, from a man. He did not uncover any side for us, and he did not approach any bed for us." He came to me and bit me with his tongue, and said: "I married you to a woman of noble lineage, and you did such and such." Then he went to the Prophet ﷺ and complained about me to him. He said: The Prophet ﷺ sent for me and said to me: "Do you fast during the day?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Do you stand in prayer at night?" I said: "Yes." He said: "But I fast and break my fast, and I pray and sleep." Then he said to me: "Read the Quran in a month." He said: I said: "I find myself stronger than that." He said: "Then read it in fifteen days." I said: "I find myself stronger than that." One of them, either Husayn or Mughirah, said: "Then read it every three days." Then he said: "And fast three days every month." I said: "I am stronger than that." He said: He kept reducing for me until he said: "Fast one day and break your fast one day.

✧ I said to 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr: I have heard that you narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said: "Whoever drinks a sip of wine, his prayer will not be accepted for forty mornings." He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever drinks a sip of wine, his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings. If he repents, Allah will turn to him. If he returns, his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings. If he repents, Allah will turn to him. If he returns, his repentance will not be accepted for forty mornings. If he repents—al-Awza'i said: I do not know whether in the third or fourth—it will be binding upon Allah to give him to drink from the mud of khabal or the pus of khabal.

✧ We descended with the Prophet ﷺ from the mountain pass of al-Adhakhir. The Prophet ﷺ looked and saw upon me a thin mantle dyed with saffron. He said: "What is this?" I realized that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked it. I went to my family while they were heating their oven, wrapped it up, threw it in, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "What happened to the mantle?" I said: I knew that you disliked it, O Messenger of Allah, so I went to my family while they were heating their oven and threw it in. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Why did you not clothe some of your family with it?" He said: And he mentioned that when he descended from the mountain pass of al-Adhakhir, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with them facing a wall that he took as a qiblah. A young sheep came wanting to pass in front of the Prophet ﷺ. He kept drawing near and warding it off until I saw the belly of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ touching the wall, and it passed behind him.

✧ We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when Abu Bakr and 'Umar came in a group of people, and their voices had risen. Abu Bakr sat near the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and 'Umar sat near. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Why did your voices rise?" A man said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr said: Good deeds are from Allah and evil deeds are from ourselves. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "What did you say, O 'Umar?" He said: I said: Good deeds and evil deeds are from Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The first to speak about this were Jibril and Mika'il. Mika'il said what you said, O Abu Bakr, and Jibril said what you said, O 'Umar. They said: Shall we differ, and then the people of heaven differ? If the people of heaven differ, the people of earth will differ. They referred the matter to Israfil, and he judged between them that good deeds and evil deeds are from Allah. Then he turned to Abu Bakr and 'Umar and said: "Preserve my judgment between you two: if Allah had willed that we not disobey, He would not have created Iblis."

✧ I said to 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr: What is the worst thing you saw Quraysh inflict upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in their open enmity? He said: I was present when their nobles gathered one day in the Hijr. They mentioned and said: We have never seen anyone like the patience we have shown regarding this man's affair. He has belittled our dreams, insulted our forefathers, criticized our religion, and divided our community. We have been patient with him over a great matter. While they were thus, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and walked until he touched the corner. When he passed by them, they winked at him, and I recognized it in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he passed by them the second time, they winked at him similarly, and I recognized that in his face. He passed by them the third time, and they winked at him similarly. Then he said: "Listen, O assembly of Quraysh! By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have brought you slaughter." He said: The people were seized with gloom, so that there was not a man among them but a bird was perched on his head. Even the severest of them against him before that would meet him with the best words he could find, saying: Depart, O Abu al-Qasim, depart rightly guided. By Allah, you were not ignorant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed. When it was the next day, they gathered and I was with them. They said to one another: You mentioned what he had reached of you and what reached you from him, until when he came to you with what you dislike, you left him. While they were thus, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared. They said: Rise against him as one man. They kept saying: You are the one who says such and such about our gods—referring to what had reached them of his criticism of their gods. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say: "Yes, I am the one who says that." He said: I saw a man among them seize the collar of his cloak. He said: Abu Bakr stood in his defense, weeping and saying: "Would you kill a man for saying, 'My Lord is Allah'?" Then they turned away from him. That was the worst I ever saw Quraysh do to him ﷺ.
