✧ “Have I not been told that you stand in prayer all night and fast all day?” I said: Yes, O Messenger of God, and I intend by that only good. He said: “Do not do that, for if you do that the eye will become sunken and the soul will grow weary. No one who fasts perpetually has fasted. But I will guide you to the fasting of a lifetime: three days of every month, for that is the fasting of a lifetime.” He said: I said: O Messenger of God, I am able to do more. He said: “Then fast five days of the month.” I said: O Messenger of God, I am able to do more. He said: “Then fast ten days.” I said: I am able to do more. He said: “Then fast the fast of Dāwūd: he would fast one day and break his fast one day, and he would not flee when he met the enemy.”
