✧ “You fast all day and stand in prayer all night?” I said: Yes. He said: “Do not do that, for if you do that your eyes will become sunken and your soul will grow weary. Fast and break your fast, stand in prayer and sleep. Fast three days of the month, for that is like fasting a lifetime. Indeed your eyes have a right over you, your soul has a right over you, and your family has a right over you.” I said: O Prophet of God, I find strength. He said: “If you must do so, then fast the fast of the Prophet of God – meaning Dāwūd ﷺ – he would fast one day and break his fast one day, and he would not flee when he met the enemy.”
