✧ I said to 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr: What is the worst thing you saw Quraysh inflict upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in their open enmity? He said: I was present when their nobles gathered one day in the Hijr. They mentioned and said: We have never seen anyone like the patience we have shown regarding this man's affair. He has belittled our dreams, insulted our forefathers, criticized our religion, and divided our community. We have been patient with him over a great matter. While they were thus, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and walked until he touched the corner. When he passed by them, they winked at him, and I recognized it in the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When he passed by them the second time, they winked at him similarly, and I recognized that in his face. He passed by them the third time, and they winked at him similarly. Then he said: "Listen, O assembly of Quraysh! By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have brought you slaughter." He said: The people were seized with gloom, so that there was not a man among them but a bird was perched on his head. Even the severest of them against him before that would meet him with the best words he could find, saying: Depart, O Abu al-Qasim, depart rightly guided. By Allah, you were not ignorant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed. When it was the next day, they gathered and I was with them. They said to one another: You mentioned what he had reached of you and what reached you from him, until when he came to you with what you dislike, you left him. While they were thus, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared. They said: Rise against him as one man. They kept saying: You are the one who says such and such about our gods—referring to what had reached them of his criticism of their gods. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say: "Yes, I am the one who says that." He said: I saw a man among them seize the collar of his cloak. He said: Abu Bakr stood in his defense, weeping and saying: "Would you kill a man for saying, 'My Lord is Allah'?" Then they turned away from him. That was the worst I ever saw Quraysh do to him ﷺ.
