✧ From the Prophet ﷺ, and as for Yahya, he said: From his father, from his grandfather, who said: "We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to hear and obey in our hardship and ease, in what we like and what we dislike, and in preference given to others over us, and that we would not dispute authority with its people, and that we would stand for the truth wherever it may be, not fearing the blame of any critic for the sake of Allah." Shu'bah said: "Sayyar did not mention this phrase 'wherever it may be'; Yahya mentioned it." Shu'bah said: "If I added anything to it, it is from Sayyar or from Yahya."

"I came to the Messenger of Allah with my father Umayyah on the Day of the Conquest (of Makkah) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, accept my father's pledge for emigration (Al-Hijrah).' The Messenger of Allah said: 'I will accept his pledge to fight in Jihad, for the emigration (Al-Hijrah) has ceased."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4160)

كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَلَا تُبَايِعُونَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ؟» فَرَدَّدَهَا ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقَدَّمْنَا أَيْدِيَنَا فَبَايَعْنَا فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ بَايَعْنَاكَ فَعَلَامَ؟ قَالَ «عَلَى أَنْ تَعْبُدُوا اللهَ لَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا وَالصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ وَأَسَرَّ كَلِمَةً خَفِيَّةً لَا تَسْأَلُوا النَّاسَ شَيْئًا»
✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He repeated it three times. So we stretched out our hands and pledged allegiance. We said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have pledged allegiance to you, so upon what?" He said: "Upon that you worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and the five prayers," and he whispered a hidden word: "that you do not ask people for anything."

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَحَوْلَهُ عِصَابَةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ «تُبَايِعُونِي عَلَى أَنْ لَا تُشْرِكُوا بِاللهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا تَزْنُوا وَلَا تَسْرِقُوا وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ وَلَا تَأْتَوا بِبُهْتَانٍ تَفْتَرُونَهُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَأَرْجُلِكُمْ وَلَا تَعْصُونِي فِي مَعْرُوفٍ فَمَنْ وَفَّى فَأَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللهِ وَمَنْ أَصَابَ مِنْكُمْ شَيْئًا فَعُوقِبَ بِهِ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَهُوَ كَفَّارَةٌ لَهُ وَمَنْ أَصَابَ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا ثُمَّ سَتَرَهُ اللهُ فَأَمْرُهُ إِلَى اللهِ إِنْ شَاءَ عَفَا عَنْهُ وَإِنْ شَاءَ عَاقَبَهُ» خَالَفَهُ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ فُضَيْلٍ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ مُرْسَلًا
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, while a group of his companions were around him: "Pledge allegiance to me upon that you associate nothing with Allah, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not kill your children, do not bring a slander that you fabricate between your hands and feet, and do not disobey me in what is right. Whoever fulfills it, his reward is upon Allah, and whoever among you commits any of those and is punished for it in this world, it is an expiation for him. And whoever among you commits any of those and then Allah conceals it, his affair is up to Allah: if He wills, He will forgive him, and if He wills, He will punish him." Ahmad b. Sa'id disagreed with him; he narrated it from Ya'qub, from his father, from Salih, from al-Harith b. Fudayl, from al-Zuhri, from 'Ubadah as a mursal report.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to me upon what the women pledged allegiance: that you associate nothing with Allah, do not steal, do not commit adultery, do not kill your children, do not bring a slander that you fabricate between your hands and feet, and do not disobey me in what is right?" We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." So we pledged allegiance to him upon that. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever commits any of that after that and is afflicted with a punishment for it, it is an expiation for him. And whoever is not afflicted with a punishment for it, his affair is up to Allah: if He wills, He will forgive him, and if He wills, He will punish him for it."

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to pledge allegiance to you upon emigration, and I left my parents weeping." He said: "Return to them and make them laugh as you made them weep."

✧ A bedouin asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about emigration. He said: "Woe to you! The matter of emigration is severe. Do you have camels?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Do you pay their zakah?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then work from beyond the seas, for Allah will not deprive you of any of your deeds."

قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الْهِجْرَةِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «أَنْ تُهْجُرَ مَا كَرِهَ اللهُ وَالْهِجْرَةُ هِجْرَتَانِ هِجْرَةُ الْحَاضِرِ وَالْبَادِي فَأَمَّا الْبَادِي فَإِنَّهُ يُطِيعُ إِذَا أُمِرَ وَيُجِيبُ إِذَا دُعِيَ وَأَمَّا الْحَاضِرُ فَأَعْظَمُهُمَا بَلِيَّةً وَأَفْضَلُهُمَا أَجْرًا»
✧ A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, which emigration is best?" He said: "That you abandon what Allah dislikes. Emigration is of two kinds: the emigration of the settled and that of the bedouin. As for the bedouin, he obeys when commanded and answers when called. As for the settled, his trial is greater and his reward is greater."

قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ كَانَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بِمَكَّةَ وَإِنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَأَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ كَانُوا مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ لِأَنَّهُمْ هَجَرُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ مُهَاجِرُونَ لَأَنَّ الْمَدِينَةَ كَانَتْ دَارَ شِرْكٍ فَجَاءُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لَيْلَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ
✧ Ibn 'Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Makkah, and Abu Bakr, 'Umar, and the companions of the Prophet ﷺ were among the Emigrants because they had abandoned the polytheists. And among the Ansar there were also Emigrants, because Madinah was a land of polytheism, so they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of al-'Aqabah.

"I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they are saying that no one will enter Paradise except a Muhajir."' He said: "There is no more emigration (Hijrah) after the Conquest of Makkah, rather there is Jihad and intention. When you are called to moblize (for Jihad) then do so." ✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a delegation, all of us seeking some need, and I was the last of them to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I left behind me people who claim that migration has ceased. He said: "Migration will not cease as long as the disbelievers are fought."

✧ We came in a delegation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My companions entered and he fulfilled their needs. Then I was the last of them to enter upon him. He said: "What is your need?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, when does migration cease? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Migration does not cease as long as the disbelievers are fought."

جَرِيرٌ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أُبَايِعُكَ عَلَى السَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَةِ فِيمَا أَحْبَبْتُ وَفِيمَا كَرِهْتُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَوَ تَسْتَطِيعُ ذَلِكَ يَا جَرِيرُ أَوَ تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ قُلْ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ فَبَايَعَنِي وَالنُّصْحِ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ
✧ Jarir said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him: I pledge allegiance to you to hear and obey in what I love and what I hate. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Can you do that, O Jarir, or are you able to do that?" He said: Say: "As much as I can." So he pledged allegiance to me and to give sincere counsel to every Muslim.

I said: O Messenger of Allah, stretch out your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you, and stipulate conditions upon me, for you know best the conditions. He said: "I pledge allegiance to you on the condition that you worship Allah, establish prayer, give zakah, give sincere counsel to the Muslim, and part with the polytheist."

✧ I heard Ubadah b. al-Samit say: I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a group, and he said: "I pledge allegiance to you on the condition that you do not associate anything with Allah, do not steal, do not commit adultery, do not kill your children, do not bring false slander that you fabricate between your hands and feet, and do not disobey me in what is right. Whoever among you fulfills this, his reward is with Allah. And whoever commits any of that and is punished, it is a purification for him. And whoever Allah conceals, his matter is up to Allah: if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him."

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ among women to pledge allegiance to him. The Prophet ﷺ took from us: {that they should not associate anything with Allah} [Al-Mumtahanah 12] the verse. He said: "As much as you are able and can bear." We said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is more merciful to us than our own selves. We said: O Messenger of Allah, will you not shake hands with us? He said: "I do not shake hands with women. My words to one woman are like my words to a hundred women."

✧ A slave came and pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to emigrate, and the Prophet ﷺ was not aware that he was a slave. Then his master came wanting him, so the Prophet ﷺ said, "Sell him to me." He bought him for two black slaves. Then he never accepted the pledge of anyone after that until he asked, "Is he a slave?"

✧ A bedouin pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon Islam, then the bedouin fell ill with a fever in Madinah. The bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, release me from my pledge." He refused. Then he came to him again and said, "Release me from my pledge." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ refused. The bedouin left, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Madinah is like a bellows: it expels its impurities and its goodness shines forth."

✧ I came to 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah and the people were gathered around him. I heard him saying: While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, we stopped at a place, and some of us began setting up our tents when his caller called out, "The prayer is to be held in congregation." So we gathered, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and addressed us, saying, "There was no prophet before me except that it was incumbent upon him to guide his community to what he knew was good for them and warn them of what he knew was evil for them. This community of yours has been granted well-being at its beginning, but its latter part will be afflicted with trials and matters they will find objectionable. A tribulation will come, and the believer will say, 'This is my destruction.' Then it will pass. Then a tribulation will come, and the believer will say, 'This, this.' Then it will pass. So whoever wishes to be kept away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, let death overtake him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him treat people the way he loves to be treated. And whoever pledges allegiance to an Imam and gives him the clasp of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him as much as he is able."

As for the one who seeks the countenance of Allah, obeys the imam, spends generously, and avoids corruption, then his sleep and his wakefulness are all reward. As for the one who goes to war for show and reputation, disobeys the imam, and spreads corruption in the land, he will not return with even his basic provision.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no ruler who does not have two inner circles: a circle that commands him to what is right and forbids him from what is wrong, and a circle that spares no effort to bring him ruin. Whoever is protected from its evil is indeed protected, and he belongs to whichever of the two prevails over him.”

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever among you is given authority over something, and Allah wishes good for him, He will appoint for him a righteous minister: if he forgets, he reminds him; and if he remembers, he helps him.”

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ جَيْشًا وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَجُلًا فَأَوْقَدَ نَارًا فَقَالَ ادْخُلُوهَا فَأَرَادَ نَاسٌ أَنْ يَدْخُلُوهَا وَقَالَ الْآخَرُونَ إِنَّمَا فَرَرْنَا مِنْهَا فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لِلَّذِينَ أَرَادُوا أَنْ يَدْخُلُوهَا «لَوْ دَخَلْتُمُوهَا لَمْ تَزَالُوا فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ» وَقَالَ لِلْآخَرِينَ خَيْرًا وَقَالَ ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَوْلًا حَسَنًا
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out an army and placed a man in command over them. He lit a fire and said: “Enter it.” Some people wanted to enter it, while others said: “We only fled from it.” That was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to those who wanted to enter it: “If you had entered it, you would have remained in it until the Day of Resurrection.” And he said something good to the others. Ibn al-Muthannā said: “a good word.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «عَلَى الْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ السَّمْعُ وَالطَّاعَةُ فِيمَا أَحَبَّ وَكَرِهَ إِلَّا أَنْ يُؤْمَرَ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ فَإِذَا أُمِرَ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ فَلَا سَمْعَ وَلَا طَاعَةَ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Muslim person must listen and obey in what he likes and dislikes, unless he is commanded to commit disobedience. If he is commanded to commit disobedience, then there is no listening and no obedience.”

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ أُمَرَاءُ فَمَنْ صَدَّقَهُمْ بِكَذِبِهِمْ وَأَعَانَهُمْ عَلَى ظُلْمِهِمْ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي وَلَسْتُ مِنْهُ وَلَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ حَوْضِي وَمَنْ لَمْ يُصَدِّقْهُمْ عَلَى كَذِبِهِمْ وَلَمْ يُعِنْهُمْ عَلَى ظُلْمِهِمْ فَهُوَ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ وَيَرِدُ عَلَيَّ حَوْضِي»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There will be rulers. Whoever believes their lies and helps them in their wrongdoing is not from me, and I am not from him, and he will not come to my basin. Whoever does not believe their lies and does not help them in their wrongdoing is from me, and I am from him, and he will come to my basin."

خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ تِسْعَةٌ خَمْسَةٌ وَأَرْبَعَةٌ أَحَدُ الْعَدَدَيْنِ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ وَالْآخَرُ مِنَ الْعَجَمِ فَقَالَ «اسْمَعُوا هَلْ سَمِعْتُمْ أَنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ بَعْدِي أُمَرَاءُ مَنْ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَصَدَّقَهُمْ بِكَذِبِهِمْ وَأَعَانَهُمْ عَلَى ظُلْمِهِمْ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي وَلَسْتُ مِنْهُ وَلَيْسَ بِوَارِدٍ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَدْخُلْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَمْ يُصَدِّقْهُمْ بِكَذِبِهِمْ وَلَمْ يُعِنْهُمْ عَلَى ظُلْمِهِمْ فَهُوَ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ وَسَيَرِدُ عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ» 7784 وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ أَبِي حُصَيْنٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْعَدَوِيِّ عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ 7785 وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَيْسَ بِالنَّخْعِيِّ عَنْ كَعْبٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ نَحْوَهُ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us while we were nine: five and four, one of the two groups from the Arabs and the other from the non-Arabs. He said: "Listen, have you heard that after me there will be rulers? Whoever enters upon them and believes their lies and helps them in their wrongdoing is not from me, and I am not from him, and he will not come to the basin. Whoever does not enter upon them, does not believe their lies, and does not help them in their wrongdoing is from me, and I am from him, and he will come to the basin." 7784 And Muhammad narrated to me from Sufyan from Abu Husayn from al-Sha'bi from 'Asim al-'Adawi from Ka'b b. 'Ujrah from the Prophet ﷺ. 7785 And Muhammad narrated to me from Sufyan from Zubayd from Ibrahim, not al-Nakha'i, from Ka'b from the Prophet ﷺ similarly.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَقَدْ وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ فِي الْغَرْزِ أَيُّ الْجِهَادِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «كَلِمَةُ حَقٍّ عِنْدَ سُلْطَانٍ جَائِرٍ»
✧ A man asked the Prophet ﷺ while he had placed his foot in the stirrup: "Which jihad is best?" He said: "A word of truth in the presence of a tyrannical ruler."

كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي مَجْلِسٍ فَقَالَ «تُبَايِعُونِي عَلَى أَنْ لَا تُشْرِكُوا بِاللهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا تَسْرِقُوا وَلَا تَزْنُوا» وَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْآيَةَ «فَمَنْ وَفَّى مِنْكُمْ فَأَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللهِ وَمَنْ أَصَابَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا فَسَتَرَهُ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ فَهُوَ إِلَى اللهِ إِنْ شَاءَ عَذَّبَهُ وَإِنْ شَاءَ غَفَرَ لَهُ»
✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ in a gathering when he said: "Pledge allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, and will not commit adultery." And he recited to them the verse. "Whoever among you fulfills it, his reward is with Allah; and whoever commits any of that and Allah conceals it for him, then his matter is with Allah: if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him."

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّكُمْ سَتَحْرِصُونَ عَلَى الْإِمَارَةِ وَإِنَّهَا سَتَكُونُ نَدَامَةً وَحَسْرَةً فَنُعْمَ الْمُرْضِعَةُ وَبِئْسَتِ الْفَاطِمَةُ»
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said: "You will soon desire leadership, and it will be a regret and remorse. What a good wet-nurse, and what an evil weaner."
