43. Dressing Up

  1. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5462Hasan

    «أَنَّهُ أُصِيبَ أَنْفُهُ يَوْمَ الْكِلَابِ فَاتَّخَذَ أَنْفًا مِنْ وَرِقٍ فَأَنْتَنَ عَلَيْهِ فَأَمَرَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ أَنْفًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ»

    ✧ His nose was cut on the day of al-Kilab, so he made a nose out of silver, but it began to stink, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to make a nose out of gold.

    كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ إِذَا اسْتَجْمَرَ اسْتَجْمَرَ بِالْأَلُوَّةِ غَيْرَ مُطَرَّاةٍ وَبِكَافُورٍ يَطْرَحُهُ مَعَ الْأَلُوَّةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «هَكَذَا كَانَ يَسْتَجْمِرُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ»

    ✧ When Ibn Umar used istijmar (cleaned himself after relieving), he would use plain aloeswood without any added perfume and camphor which he would place with the aloeswood. Then he said: 'This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform istijmar.'

  3. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5464Sahih

    نَهَى عَنِ التَّزَعْفُرِ»

    ✧ He forbade saffron dye.

    نَهَى أَنْ يَتَزَعْفَرَ الرَّجُلُ»

    ✧ He forbade a man from dyeing with saffron.

    «لَا يَدْخُلُ النَّارَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ وَلَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُحِبُّ أَنْ يَكُونَ ثَوْبُهُ حَسَنًا وَنَعْلُهُ حَسَنَةً فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَمِيلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ الْكِبْرُ مَنْ بَطِرَ الْحَقَّ وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ»

    ✧ 'No one will enter the Fire who has an atom's weight of faith in his heart, and no one will enter Paradise who has an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart.' A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, a man likes his garment to be nice and his sandals to be nice.' He said: 'Indeed Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.'

  6. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5467Sahih

    جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي حُبِّبَ إِلَيَّ الْجَمَالُ فَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفُوقَنِي أَحَدٌ فِيهِ بِشِرَاكٍ أَفَمِنَ الْكِبْرِ هُوَ؟ قَالَ «لَا إِنَّمَا الْكِبْرُ مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ»

    ✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I love beauty, and I do not like anyone to surpass me in it even by a shoelace. Is that arrogance?' He said: 'No, arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.'

  7. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5468Sahih

    « لَا تَدْخُلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ كَلْبٌ أَوْ تِمْثَالٌ» فَقُلْتُ أَنْطَلِقُ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ فَأَسْأَلُهَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَأَتَيْتُهَا فَقُلْتُ يَا أُمَّهْ إِنَّ هَذَا حَدَّثَنِي أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَا تَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ تِمْثَالٌ أَوْ كَلْبٌ» فَهَلْ سَمِعْتِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَتْ لَا وَلَكِنْ سَأُحَدِّثُكُمْ مَا رَأَيْتُهُ فَعَلَ خَرَجَ فِي بَعْضِ غَزَوَاتِهِ فَكُنْتُ أَتَحَيَّنُ قُفُولَهُ فَأَخَذْتُ نَمَطًا فَسَتَرْتُهُ عَلَى الْمَعْرِضِ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ اسْتَقْبَلْتُهُ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَقُلْتُ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَعَزَّكَ وَنَصَرَكَ وَأَكْرَمَكَ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْبَيْتِ فَرَأَى فِيهِ النَّمَطَ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ شَيْئًا وَرَأَيْتُ الْكَرَاهَةَ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَجَذَبَهُ حَتَّى هَتَكَهُ أَوْ قَطَعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمْ يَأْمُرْنَا فِيمَا رَزَقَنَا أَنْ نَكْسُوَ الطِّينَ وَالْحِجَارَةَ» قَالَتْ فَقَطَعْتُهُ قِطْعَتَيْنِ وَحَشَوْتُهُمَا لِيفًا فَلَمْ يَعِبْ ذَلِكَ عَلَيَّ

    ✧ «Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a statue.» I said, 'I will go to 'A'ishah and ask her about that.' So I came to her and said, 'O mother, this one narrated to me that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Angels do not enter a house in which there is a statue or a dog." Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention that?' She said, 'No, but I will tell you what I saw him do. He went out on one of his military expeditions, and I was awaiting his return. I took a patterned cloth and hung it over a shelf. When he came, I met him at the door and said, "Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah. Praise be to Allah who honored you, supported you, and ennobled you." He looked at the house and saw the cloth, but he did not respond to me at all. I saw displeasure in his face. He pulled it until he tore it or cut it, then said, "Allah has not commanded us, in what He has provided us, to clothe clay and stones."' She said, 'So I cut it into two pieces and stuffed them with palm fiber, and he did not criticize me for that.'

    «قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ وَكَانَ أَسَنَّ أَصْحَابِهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَغَلَّفَهَا بِالْحِنَّاءِ وَالْكَتَمِ حَتَّى قَنَأَ لَوْنُهَا سَوَادًا فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ فَقُلْتُ قَنَأَ لَوْنُهَا سَوَادًا قَالَ لَمْ أَقُلْ سَوَادًا»

    ✧ "The Messenger of Allahﷺ arrived in Medina and his companion Abu Bakr was very dark-skinned. He covered himself with henna and dye until his skin became black. When I woke up in the morning, I said, 'His skin has become black.' He said, 'I did not say black.'"

    «إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى لَا يَصْبِغُونَ فَخَالِفُوهُمْ»

    ✧ «The Jews and the Christians do not dye, so differ from them.»

  10. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5471Sahih

    أُتِيَ بِأَبِي قُحَافَةَ يَوْمَ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ وَرَأْسُهُ وَلِحْيَتُهُ كَثُغَامَةٍ بَيْضَاءَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «غَيِّرُوا رَأْسَهُ وَاجْتَنِبُوا السَّوَادَ»

    ✧ Abu Quhafah was brought on the day of the conquest of Makkah, and his head and beard were white like the thaghamah plant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, «Change his head and avoid black.»

  11. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5472Sahih

    جَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ بِأَبِي قُحَافَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمِ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ «لَوْ أَقْرَرْتَ الشَّيْخَ فِي بَيْتِهِ لَأَتَيْنَاهُ تَكْرِمَةً لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ» قَالَ فَأَسْلَمَ وَرَأْسُهُ وَلِحْيَتُهُ كَالثَّغَامَةِ بَيْضَاءَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «غَيِّرُوهُمَا وَجَنِّبُوهُ السَّوَادَ»

    ✧ Abu Bakr brought Abu Quhafah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the conquest of Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, «If you had kept the old man in his house, we would have come to him, out of honor for Abu Bakr.» He said, 'Then he embraced Islam, and his head and beard were white like the thaghamah plant.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, «Change them both and keep him away from black.»

  12. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5473Hasan sahih

    «غَيِّرُوا الشَّيْبَ وَلَا تَشَبَّهُوا بِالْيَهُودِ وَالنَّصَارَى»

    ✧ «Change gray hair and do not resemble the Jews and the Christians.»

  13. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5474Sahih

    «إِنَّ أَحْسَنَ مَا غَيَّرْتُمْ بِهِ الشَّيْبَ الْحِنَّاءُ وَالْكَتَمُ»

    ✧ «The best thing with which you change gray hair is henna and katam.»

    «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَرَ بِإِحْفَاءِ الشَّوَارِبِ وَإِعْفَاءِ اللِّحَى»

    ✧ «The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded trimming the mustaches and letting the beards grow.»

  15. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5476Sahih

    ذِكْرُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الْمَجُوسَ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُمْ يُوفُونَ سِبَالَهُمْ وَيَحْلِقُونَ لِحَاهُمْ فَخَالِفُوهُمْ» فَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَجُزُّ سِبَالَهُ كَمَا تُجَزُّ الشَّاةُ أَوِ الْبَعِيرُ

    ✧ The Majus were mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, «They leave their side whiskers and shave their beards, so differ from them.» Ibn 'Umar used to trim his side whiskers as a sheep or camel is sheared.

  16. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5477Sahih

    «مَنْ لَمْ يَأْخُذْ شَارِبَهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا»

    ✧ «Whoever does not take from his mustache is not one of us.»

    «الْفِطْرَةُ قَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظْفَارِ وَحَلْقُ الْعَانَةِ»

    ✧ «The fitrah is trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, and shaving the pubic hair.»

  18. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5479Sahih

    «خَمْسٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ قَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَنَتْفُ الْإِبِطِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظَافِرِ وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ وَالْخِتَانُ»

    ✧ «Five are from the fitrah: trimming the mustache, plucking the armpit hair, clipping the nails, shaving the pubic hair, and circumcision.»

  19. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5480Sahih

    «الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ الِاخْتِتَانُ وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظَافِرِ وَنَتْفُ الْإِبِطِ»

    ✧ «The fitrah is five: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, and plucking the armpit hair.»

  20. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5481Sahih

    «الْفِطْرَةُ خَمْسٌ تَقْلِيمُ الْأَظَافِرِ وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ وَالْخِتَانُ وَنَتْفُ الْإِبِطِ»

    ✧ The fitrah is five: trimming the nails, clipping the moustache, shaving the pubic area, circumcision, and plucking the armpit hair.

  21. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5482Sahih

    «خَمْسٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ الْخِتَانُ وَالِاسْتِحْدَادُ وَنَتْفُ الْإِبِطِ وَقَصُّ الشَّارِبِ وَتَقْلِيمُ الْأَظْفَارِ»

    The Prophet ﷺ as saying: The inborn characteristics of man are five. Another version says: Five things are of the inborn characteristics of man: circumcision, shaving the pubes, plucking out hair under the armpit, paring the nails and clipping the moustaches. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4198)

  22. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5483Sahih

    أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَائِرًا فِي مَنْزِلِنَا فَرَأَى رَجُلًا شَعْثًا فَقَالَ «أَمَا كَانَ هَذَا يَجِدُ مَا يُسَكِّنُ بِهِ شَعْرَهُ» وَرَأَى رَجُلًا عَلَيْهِ ثِيَابٌ وَسِخَةٌ فَقَالَ «أَمَا كَانَ هَذَا يَجِدُ مَا يَغْسِلُ بِهِ ثَوْبَهُ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us as a visitor in our home and saw a man with disheveled hair, so he said, "Could this one not find something to settle his hair with?" And he saw a man wearing dirty clothes, so he said, "Could this one not find something to wash his garment with?"

  23. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5484Sahih

    «نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ التَّرَجُّلِ إِلَّا غِبًّا»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade combing the hair except every other day.

  24. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5485Sahih

    كَانَ يَسْدِلُ شَعْرَهُ وَكَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ يَفْرُقُونَ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَكَانَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ يَسْدِلُونَ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُحِبُّ مُوَافَقَةَ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فِيمَا لَمْ يَنْزِلْ عَلَيْهِ فَفَرَقَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ»

    ✧ He used to let his hair hang down, and the polytheists used to part their hair, while the People of the Book used to let it hang down. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved to agree with the People of the Book in matters about which nothing had been revealed to him, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ parted his hair.

  25. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5486Sahih

    كَانَ يَمْنَعُ أَهْلَهُ الْحِلْيَةَ وَالْحَرِيرَ وَيَقُولُ «إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ حِلْيَةَ الْجَنَّةِ وَحَرِيرَهَا فَلَا تَلْبَسُوهَا فِي الدُّنْيَا»

    ✧ He used to prevent his family from wearing ornaments and silk, saying: "If you love the ornaments and silk of Paradise, do not wear them in this world."

    «نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the gold ring.

  27. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5488Weak

    جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَعَلَيْهِ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَقَالَ «مَا لِي أَرَى عَلَيْكَ حِلْيَةَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ» فَطَرَحَهُ ثُمَّ جَاءَ وَعَلَيْهِ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ شَبَهٍ فَقَالَ «مَا لِي أَجِدُ مِنْكَ رِيحَ الْأَصْنَامِ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ أَتَّخِذُهُ؟ قَالَ «مِنْ وَرِقٍ وَلَا تُتِمَّهُ مِثْقَالًا»

    ✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing an iron ring, so he said, "Why do I see on you the ornament of the people of the Fire?" So he threw it away. Then he came wearing a ring of brass, so he said, "Why do I find on you the smell of idols?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, from what should I make it?" He replied, "From silver, but do not make it a full mithqal."

  28. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5489Weak

    أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَدِمَ مِنْ نَجْرَانَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعَلَيْهِ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلَمْ يَسْأَلْهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَرَجَعَ الرَّجُلُ إِلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فَحَدَّثَهَا فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ لَكَ شَأْنًا فَارْجِعْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَلْقِ الْخَاتَمَ فَلَمَّا اسْتَأْذَنَ أَذِنَ لَهُ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعْرَضْتَ عَنِّي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّكَ جِئْتَنِيَ وَفِي يَدِكَ جَمْرَةٌ مِنْ نَارٍ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ جِئْتُ إِذًا بِجَمْرٍ كَثِيرٍ وَكَانَ قَدْ قَدِمَ بِحُلِيٍّ مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «مَا جِئْتَ بِهِ غَيْرُ مُغْنٍ عَنَّا شَيْئًا إِلَّا مَا أَغْنَتْ عَنَّا حِجَارَةُ الْحَرَّةِ وَلَكِنَّهُ مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ اعْذُرْنِي فِي أَصْحَابِكَ لَا يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّكَ سَخِطْتَ عَلَيَّ بِشَيْءٍ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَعَذَرَهُ وَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّ الَّذِي كَانَ مِنْهُ إِنَّمَا كَانَ لِخَاتَمِهِ

    ✧ A man came from Najran to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing a gold ring, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and did not ask him about anything. The man returned to his wife and told her, and she said, "There is something about you. Go back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and throw away the ring." When he sought permission, he was granted it, and he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who returned his greeting. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, you turned away from me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You came to me with a live coal from the Fire in your hand." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, then I have brought many coals." He had brought ornaments from al-Bahrayn. The Prophet ﷺ said, "What you have brought is not sufficient for us at all, except as the stones of the harrah are sufficient, but it is the goods of the life of this world." The man said, "Excuse me before your companions so they do not think you are angry with me for some reason." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose and excused him, and explained that what had happened had only been because of his ring.

  29. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5490Sahih

    أَنَّهُ أَبْصَرَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا مِنْ وَرِقٍ يَوْمًا وَاحِدًا فَصَنَعَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَ مِنْ وَرِقٍ فَلَبِسُوهَا فَطَرَحَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ خَاتَمَهُ فَطَرَحَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَهُمْ

    ✧ He saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing a silver ring one day, so the people made silver rings and wore them. Then the Prophet ﷺ threw away his ring, and the people threw away their rings.

  30. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5491Sahih

    اتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَلَبِسَهُ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَ الذَّهَبِ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَلْبَسُ هَذَا الْخَاتَمَ وَإِنِّي لَنْ أَلْبَسَهُ أَبَدًا» فَنَبَذَهُ فَنَبَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَهُمْ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a gold ring and wore it, so the people took gold rings. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and said, "I used to wear this ring, but I will never wear it again." Then he threw it away, and the people threw away their rings.

  31. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5492Sahih

    أَنَّهُ رَأَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي يَدِهِ يَوْمًا خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَاضْطَرَبَ النَّاسُ الْخَوَاتِيمَ فَرَمَى بِهِ وَقَالَ «لَا أَلْبَسُهُ أَبَدًا»

    ✧ He saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day with a gold ring on his hand, and the people rushed to make rings, so he threw it away and said, "I will never wear it again."

  32. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5493Sahih

    اتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا فَلَبِسَهُ وَقَالَ «شَغَلَنِي هَذَا عَنْكُمْ مُنْذُ الْيَوْمِ» ثُمَّ رَمَى بِهِ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a ring and wore it, then said, "This has preoccupied me from you since today." Then he threw it away.

    اتَّخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ فَاتَّخَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَ الذَّهَبِ فَأَلْقَاهُ مِنْ يَدِهِ وَقَالَ «لَا أَلْبَسُهُ أَبَدًا» وَاتَّخَذَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ وَرَقٍ فَجَعَلَ فَصَّهُ مِمَّا يَلِي كَفَّهُ وَنَقَشَ فِيهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ فِي يَدِهِ حَتَّى قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a ring of gold, and the people took gold rings, so he threw it from his hand and said, “I will never wear it.” He then took a ring of silver and set its stone facing his palm, and engraved on it: Muhammad, Messenger of Allah. It remained on his hand until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a ring of gold and used to set its stone facing the inside of his palm. The people took rings, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw it away and said, “I will never wear it.” He then took a ring of silver, and it was on his hand, then on the hand of Abu Bakr, then on the hand of Umar, then on the hand of Uthman, until it fell from him into the well of Aris.

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a ring made and said, “We have made a ring and inscribed on it an inscription, so let no one engrave upon it.”

    The Messenger of Allah [SAW] put on a ring of gold, and he used to wear its stone (Fass) next to his palm. Then the people started to wear rings of gold. Then the Messenger of Allah [SAW] discarded it, and the people discarded their rings. Then he acquired a ring of silver with which he used to seal letters, but he did not wear it.     ✧ "It has reached me that you say the curse upon the tattooed woman, the one who tattoos, the one who plucks facial hair, and the one who alters the creation of Allah. I have read what is between the two tablets, but I did not find what you say." He said, "Yes, I found it. However, you do not know." She asked, "Where is it?" He replied, "Have you not read, 'Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it'?" She said, "Yes." He said, "That is it." She said, "Indeed, I see some of that on your family." He said, "Enter and look." So she entered and looked but she did not see anything. Abdullah said to her, "Did you see anything?" She replied, "No." Abdullah said, "If you had seen anything from that, would you have followed me?"

    What is this news that has reached me from you that you curse those women who tattooed and those women who have themselves tattooed, the women who pluck hair from their faces and who make spaces between their teeth for beautification changing what God has created? Thereupon 'Abdullah said: Should I not curse one upon whom Messenger of Allah ﷺ has invoked curse and that is in the Book also. Thereupon that woman said: I read the Qur'an from cover to cover, but I did not find that in it. whereupon he said: If you had read (thoroughly) you would have definitely found this in that (as) Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, has said:" What Messenger of Allah brings for you accept that and what he has forbidden you, refrain from that." That woman said: I find this thing in your wife even now. Thereupon he said: Go and see her. She reported: I went to the wife of 'Abdullah but found nothing of this sort in her. She came back to him and said: I have not seen anything. whereupon he said: Had there been anything like it in her, I would have never slept with her in the bed.     ✧ I heard Mu'awiya while he was on the pulpit and in his hand was a lock of hair, saying: 'What is wrong with women who put something like this on their heads? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "There is no woman who puts hair from someone else on her head except that it is falsity."'

    ✧ Mu'awiya came to Madinah and addressed us. He took out a bundle of hair and said: 'I did not think anyone would do this except the Jews. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard of it and called it falsity.'

    أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَامَ حَجَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ تَنَاوَلَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ كَانَتْ فِي يَدِ حَرَسِيٍّ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حَيْثُ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ»

    ✧ He heard Mu'awiya in the year of the Hajj while he was on the pulpit. He took a lock of hair that was in the hand of a guard and said: 'O people of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding the like of this, and he said: "The Children of Israel perished only when their women adopted this."'

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who attaches hair extensions and the one who has them attached, and the one who tattoos and the one who has herself tattooed.

    إِنَّ جَارِيَةً زَوَّجُوهَا فَمَرِضَتْ فَتَمَعَّطَ شَعْرُهَا فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يَصِلُوا فِي شَعْرِهَا فَذَكَرُوا ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْوَاصِلَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْصِلَةَ وَالْمُوَاصَلَةَ»

    ✧ A slave girl was given in marriage, then she fell ill and her hair fell out, so they wanted to attach hair to her hair. They mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "May Allah curse the one who attaches hair extensions and the one who has them attached and the one who asks for that."

    «أَنَّ جَارِيَةً مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ تَزَوَّجَتْ وَأَنَّهَا مَرِضَتْ فَتَمَرَّطَ شَعْرُهَا فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يَصِلُوهَا فَسَأَلُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ فَلَعَنَ الْوَاصِلَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْصِلَةَ»

    ✧ A slave girl from the Ansar married, then she fell ill and her hair fell out, so they wanted to attach hair extensions for her. They asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that, and he cursed the one who attaches hair extensions and the one who has them attached.

    جَاءَتْ فَأَرَةٌ فَأَخَذَتْ تَجُرُّ الْفَتِيلَةَ فَذَهَبَتِ الْجَارِيَةُ تَزْجُرُهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «دَعِيهَا» قَالَ فَجَاءَتْ بِهَا فَأَلْقَتْهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْخُمْرَةِ الَّتِي كَانَ عَلَيْهَا قَاعِدًا فَأَحْرَقَتْ مِنْهَا مِثْلَ مَوْضِعِ دِرْهَمٍ فَقَالَ ﷺ «إِذَا نِمْتُمْ فَأَطْفِئُوا سُرُجَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَدُلُّ مِثْلَ هَذِهِ عَلَى هَذَا فَتُحْرِقُكُمْ»

    A mouse came dragging a wick and dropped before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the mat on which he was sitting with the result that it burned a hole in it about the size of dirham. He (the prophet) said: When you go to sleep, extinguish your lamps, for the devil guides a creature like this to do thus and sets you on fire. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5247)

    احْتَرَقَ بَيْتٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ عَلَى أَهْلِهِ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلَمَّا حُدِّثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِشَأْنِهِمْ قَالَ ﷺ «إِنَّ هَذِهِ النَّارَ إِنَّمَا هِيَ عَدُوُّكُمْ فَإِذَا نِمْتُمْ فَأَطْفِئُوهَا عَنْكُمْ»

    ✧ A house in Madinah caught fire over its inhabitants at night. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was told of their situation, he said ﷺ: "This fire is only your enemy, so when you sleep, put it out."

    «مَنْ بَاتَ وَفِي يَدِهِ غَمَرٌ فَعَرَضَ لَهُ عَارِضٌ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُ»

    ✧ Whoever spends the night with grease on his hand and something happens to him, let him blame none but himself.

    أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ تَشْكُو إِلَيْهِ أَثَرَ الرَّحَى وَبَلَغَهَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِسَبْيٍ فَأَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ تَسْأَلُهُ خَادِمًا فَلَمْ تَلْقَهُ وَلَقِيَتْ عَائِشَةَ فَحَدَّثَتْهَا الْحَدِيثَ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهُ بِذَلِكَ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا مَضَاجِعَنَا فَذَهَبْنَا لِنَقُومَ فَقَالَ «مَكَانَكُمَا» وَقَعَدَ بَيْنَنَا حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ بَرْدَ قَدَمِهِ عَلَى صَدْرِي فَقَالَ «أَدَلُّكَمَا عَلَى خَيْرٍ مِمَّا سَأَلْتُمَانِي: تُكَبِّرَانِ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَتُسَبِّحَانِ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَتَحْمَدَانِ ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ إِذَا أَخَذْتُمَا مَضَاجِعَكُمَا فَإِنَّهُ خَيْرٌ لَكُمَا مِنْ خَادِمٍ»

    Fāṭimah came to the Prophet ﷺ to complain about the marks on her hands from grinding flour. She heard that the Prophet ﷺ had received some captives, so she went to him to request a servant but did not find him. Instead, she met ʿĀʾishah and shared her request with her. When the Prophet ﷺ returned, ʿĀʾishah informed him about Fāṭimah's request. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us, and we had already taken our places in bed. We got up to greet him, and he said, "Stay in your places." He then sat among us until I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. He then said, "I shall guide you to something better than having a servant: When you go to bed, say Allāhu akbar (Allah is the Greatest) thirty-four times, al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times, and subḥān Allāh (Glory be to Allah) thirty-three times; This is better for you than having a servant."

    دَخَلْتُ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ عَلِّمْنِي شَيْئًا أَقُولُهُ إِذَا أَوَيْتُ إِلَى فِرَاشِي قَالَ «اقْرَأْ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ»

    ✧ I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Prophet of Allah, teach me something to say when I retire to my bed.' He said, 'Recite: Qul ya ayyuha al-kafirun.'

    «هَلْ لَكَ فِي رَبِيبَةٍ لَنَا فَتَكْفُلُهَا زَيْنَبُ؟ » قَالَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَأَلَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ تَرَكْتُهَا عِنْدَ أُمِّهَا قَالَ «فَمَجِيءٌ مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ » قَالَ جِئْتُ لِتُعَلِّمَنِي شَيْئًا أَقُولُهُ عِنْدَ مَنَامِي قَالَ «اقْرَأْ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ثُمَّ نَمْ عَلَى خَاتِمَتِهَا فَإِنَّهَا بَرَاءَةٌ مِنَ الشِّرْكِ»

    ✧ He said, 'Would you like to take charge of a stepdaughter of ours, Zaynab, and look after her?' Then he came and the Prophet ﷺ asked him, and he said, 'I left her with her mother.' He said, 'Then what brings you? Has something new come?' He said, 'I have come so that you may teach me something to say at my bedtime.' He said, 'Recite: Qul ya ayyuha al-kafirun, then sleep upon its completion, for it is a declaration of freedom from shirk.'

    إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَرَ رَجُلًا إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ وَقَالَ ابْنُ كَثِيرٍ أَوْصَى رَجُلًا أَنْ يَقُولَ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ فَإِنْ مَاتَ مَاتَ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded a man, when he took to his bed—and Ibn Kathir said: he enjoined a man—to say: 'O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, and turned my face to You, and entrusted my back to You, and delegated my affair to You, out of desire and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have sent down, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.' Then if he dies, he dies upon the fitrah.

    «مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَأْوِي إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ:» لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، غَفَرَ اللَّهُ ذُنُوبَهُ أَوْ خَطَايَاهُ»، شَكَّ مِسْعَرٌ، «وَإِنْ كَانَ مِثْلَ زَبَدِ الْبَحْرِ».

    from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Whoever says when he retires to his bed: (There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs dominion, and to Him belongs praise, and He has power over all things. There is no might and no power except through Allah. Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is greatest) Allah will forgive his sins or his misdeeds", Misar was uncertain, "even if they are like the foam of the sea."

    أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ تَسْتَخْدِمُهُ فَقَالَ ﷺ «أَلَا أَدُلُّكِ أَوْ أُعَلِّمُكِ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِذَا أَوَيْتِ إِلَى فِرَاشِكِ فَسَبِّحِي وَكَبِّرِي وَهَلِّلِي ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَأَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ» قَالَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ فَلَمْ أَدَعْهَا مُنْذُ سَمِعْتُهَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالُوا وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ؟ قَالَ وَلَا لَيْلَةَ صِفِّينَ

    ✧ That Fatimah came to the Prophet ﷺ and used to serve him, so he said ﷺ, "Shall I not guide you or teach you something that is better for you than that? When you go to your bed, say 'SubhanAllah', 'Allahu Akbar', and 'Alhamdulillah', thirty-three times each." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I have not left saying it since I heard it from the Prophet ﷺ." They said, "Not even during the night of Siffin?" He said, "Not even during the night of Siffin."

  67. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5530Sahih

    كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا تَضَوَّرَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ»

    ✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned restlessly in the night, he would say: 'There is no god but Allah, the One, the Subduer, Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving.'

    كَانَ إِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ «لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِذَنْبِي وَأَسْأَلُكَ رَحْمَتَكَ اللَّهُمَّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا وَلَا تُزِغْ قَلْبِي بَعْدَ أَنْ هَدَيْتَنِيَ وَهَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ»

    ✧ When he woke in the night, he would say: 'There is no god but Allah. Glory be to You. O Allah, I ask Your forgiveness for my sin and I ask You for Your mercy. O Allah, increase me in knowledge and do not deviate my heart after You have guided me, and grant me mercy from Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower.'

    كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَحْيَا وَبِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ» وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَمَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ»

    ✧ When the Prophet ﷺ retired to his bed, he would say: 'O Allah, in Your name I live and in Your name I die.' And when he woke up, he would say: 'Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.'

    «إِذَا أَوَى الرَّجُلُ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ أَتَاهُ مَلَكٌ وَشَيْطَانٌ فَيَقُولُ الْمَلَكُ اخْتِمْ بِخَيْرٍ وَيَقُولُ الشَّيْطَانُ اخْتِمْ بِشَرٍّ فَإِنْ ذَكَرَ اللَّهَ ثُمَّ نَامَ بَاتَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ تَكْلَؤُهُ فَإِنِ اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ الْمَلَكُ افْتَحْ بِخَيْرٍ وَقَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ افْتَحْ بِشَرٍّ فَإِنْ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي رَدَّ عَلَيَّ نَفْسِي وَلَمْ يُمِتْهَا فِي مَنَامِهَا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي يُمْسِكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ أَنْ تَزُولَا» إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي يُمْسِكُ السَّمَاءَ أَنْ تَقَعَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ فَإِنْ وَقَعَ مِنْ سَرِيرِهِ فَمَاتَ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»

    ✧ When a man retires to his bed, an angel and a devil come to him. The angel says: 'Seal with good,' and the devil says: 'Seal with evil.' If he remembers Allah and then sleeps, the angels spend the night guarding him. If he wakes up, the angel says: 'Open with good,' and the devil says: 'Open with evil.' Then if he says: 'Praise be to Allah who returned my soul to me and did not cause it to die in its sleep. Praise be to Allah who holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease to exist'—until the end of the verse—'Praise be to Allah who holds the heaven lest it fall upon the earth except by His permission,' then if he falls from his bed and dies, he will enter Paradise.

    «إِذَا أَوَى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَلْيَأْخُذْ دَاخِلَةَ إِزَارَهُ فَلْيَنْفُضْ بِهَا فِرَاشَهُ وَيُسَمِّي اللَّهَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي مَا خَلَفَهُ عَلَيْهِ بَعْدَهُ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ وَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَضْطَجِعَ فَلْيَضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الْأَيْمَنَ وَلْيَقُلْ سُبْحَانَكَ رَبِّي بِكَ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا حَفِظْتَ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ»

    ✧ When one of you retires to his bed, let him take the inner part of his lower garment and dust off his bed with it and mention Allah's name, for he does not know what has come upon it after him. And when he wants to lie down, let him lie down on his right side and say: 'Glory be to You, my Lord. By You I lay down my side and by You I raise it. If You withhold my soul, then forgive it; and if You release it, then protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.'

    إِذَا أَوَى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَلْيَنْزِعْ إِزَارَهُ وَلْيَنْفُضْ بِدَاخِلَتِهَا فِرَاشَهُ ثُمَّ لْيَتَوَسَّدْ يَمِينَهُ وَيَقُولُ بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَضَعُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ ارْفَعُهُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَهَا فَارْحَمْهَا وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ»

    ✧ When one of you retires to his bed, let him take off his lower garment and dust off his bed with its inner side. Then let him use his right hand as a pillow and say: 'In Your name, O Allah, I lay down my side and by You I raise it. O Allah, if You withhold it (my soul), then have mercy on it; and if You release it, then protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.'

    «إِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ فَتَوَضَّأْ وُضُوءَكَ لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ اضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّكَ الْأَيْمَنِ ثُمَّ قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ وَاجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ مَا تَقُولُ فَإِنْ مِتَّ مِتَّ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ» فَقُلْتُ أَسْتَذْكِرُهُنَّ وَبِرَسُولِكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ؟ فَقَالَ «وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ»

    ✧ When you take to your bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side, then say: 'O Allah, I have submitted my face to You and delegated my affair to You and entrusted my back to You, out of desire and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have sent down and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.' And make it the last thing you say. Then if you die, you die upon the fitrah. I said: 'Should I memorize them: and in Your Messenger whom You have sent?' He said: 'And in Your Prophet whom You have sent.'

    كَانَ أَبُو صَالِحٍ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدُنَا أَنْ يَنَامَ أَنْ يَضْطَجِعَ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ «اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَرَبَّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ رَبَّنَا وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى مُنْزِلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ وَالْفُرْقَانِ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ وَأَنْتَ الْآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ اقْضِ عَنَّا الدَّيْنَ وَاغْنِنَا مِنَ الْفَقْرِ» وَكَانَ يَرْوِي ذَلِكَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

    ✧ Abu Salih used to command us, when one of us wanted to sleep, to lie down on his right side and then say: 'O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and Lord of everything, Splitter of the grain and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion, I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold. You are the First, so there is nothing before You, and You are the Last, so there is nothing after You, and You are the Outward, so there is nothing above You. Settle our debt and free us from poverty.' And he would narrate that from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ.

    كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا تَبَوَّأَ مَضْجَعَهُ «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَفَانِي وَآوَانِي وَسَقَانِي الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي مَنَّ عَلَيَّ فَأَفْضَلَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَعْطَانِي فَأَجْزَلَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَمَالِكَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَإِلَهَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ لَكَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ»

    ✧ He used to say when he settled into his bed: 'Praise be to Allah who sufficed me and sheltered me and gave me drink. Praise be to Allah who bestowed favor upon me and was generous. Praise be to Allah who gave me and granted abundantly. Praise be to Allah in every situation. O Allah, Lord of everything, Owner of everything, and God of everything, to You belongs everything. I seek refuge in You from the Fire.'

    كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا» وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَمَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ»

    ✧ The Prophet ﷺ, when he retired to his bed, would say: “O Allah, in Your name I die and I live.” And when he woke up he would say: “Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.”

    ✧ When he retired to his bed, he would say: “Praise be to Allah who fed us, gave us drink, and sufficed us—how many are there who have no one to suffice them and no one to shelter them?”

    كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَ نَفْسِي وَأَنْتَ تَتَوَفَّاهَا لَكَ مَمَاتُهَا وَمَحْيَاهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهَا فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا وَإِنْ أَحْيَيْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ» فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ وَلَدِهِ أَكَانَ عُمَرُ يَقُولُ هَذَا؟ قَالَ بَلْ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عُمَرَ كَانَ يَقُولُهُ فَظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

    ✧ Ibn ʿUmar, when he retired to his bed, would say: “O Allah, You created my soul and You take it. Yours is its death and its life. O Allah, if You take it, forgive it; and if You keep it alive, protect it. O Allah, I ask You for well-being.” A man from his children said to him: “Did ʿUmar used to say this?” He said: “Rather, one better than ʿUmar used to say it.” We thought he meant the Prophet ﷺ.

  79. Sahih Ibn Hibban 5542Sahih

    كَانَ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ قَالَ «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ»

    ✧ “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he wanted to sleep, would join his hands, blow into them, then recite: ‘Say: He is Allah, the One,’ ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak,’ and ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.’ Then he would wipe with them his face, his head, and the rest of his body.” ʿAqīl said: “I saw Ibn Shihāb do that.”

    «أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ جَمَعَ كَفَّيْهِ ثُمَّ نَفَثَ فِيهِمَا وَقَرَأَ فِيهِمَا بِ قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ وَقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ ثُمَّ يَسْمَحُ بِهِمَا مَا اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ يَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ»

    ✧ “The Prophet ﷺ, when he retired to his bed, would join his palms, blow into them, and recite into them: ‘Say: He is Allah, the One,’ ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak,’ and ‘Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.’ Then he would wipe with them as much of his body as he could. He would do that three times.”

    «هَلْ لَكَ فِي رَبِيبَةٍ لَنَا فَتَكْفُلُهَا زَيْنَبُ؟ » قَالَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ فَسَأَلَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ تَرَكْتُهَا عِنْدَ أُمِّهَا قَالَ «فَمَجِيءٌ مَا جَاءَ بِكَ؟ » قَالَ جِئْتُ لِتُعَمِّلَنِي شَيْئًا أَقُولُهُ عِنْدَ مَنَامِي قَالَ «اقْرَأْ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ ثُمَّ نَمْ عَلَى خَاتِمَتِهَا فَإِنَّهَا بَرَاءَةٌ مِنَ الشِّرْكِ»

    ✧ “Would you like to take charge of a stepdaughter of ours, Zaynab?” He said: “Then he came and the Prophet ﷺ asked him. He said: “I left her with her mother.” He said: “So what brings you?” He said: “I came so that you could teach me something to say when I sleep.” He said: “Recite: ‘Say: O disbelievers,’ then sleep upon its conclusion, for it is a declaration of freedom from polytheism.”

    سَمِعَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ وَأَنَا أَتَكَلَّمُ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ فَقَالَتْ «يَا عُرَيُّ أَلَا تُرِيحُ كَاتِبَكَ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَنَامُ قَبْلَهَا وَلَا يَتَحَدَّثُ بَعْدَهَا»

    ✧ ʿĀʾishah heard me talking after the latter ʿIshāʾ prayer and said: “O ʿUrayy, will you not give your scribe a rest? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used not to sleep before it or talk after it.”

    «نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ النَّوْمِ قَبْلَهَا وَالْحَدِيثِ بَعْدَهَا

    ✧ “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited sleeping before it and talking after it.”

    مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مُضْطَجِعٍ عَلَى بَطْنِهِ فَغَمَزَهُ بِرِجْلِهِ وَقَالَ «إِنَّ هَذِهِ ضِجْعَةٌ لَا يُحِبُّهَا اللَّهُ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a man lying on his belly and nudged him with his foot, saying: “This is a lying posture that Allah does not love.”

    أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ فِي الصُّفَّةِ بَعْدَ الْمَغْرِبِ فَقَالَ «يَا فُلَانُ انْطَلِقْ مَعَ فُلَانٍ وَيَا فُلَانُ انْطَلِقِ مَعَ فُلَانٍ» حَتَّى بَعَثَ خَمْسَةً أَنَا خَامِسُهُمُ فَقَالَ «قُومُوا مَعِي» فَفَعَلْنَا فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى عَائِشَةَ وَذَلِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْزِلَ الْحِجَابُ فَقَالَ «يَا عَائِشَةُ أَطْعِمِينَا» فَقَرَّبَتْ جَشِيشَةً ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا عَائِشَةُ أَطْعِمِينَا» فَقَرَّبَتْ حَيْسًا ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا عَائِشَةُ اسْقِينَا» فَجَاءَتْ بِعُسٍّ فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «يَا عَائِشَةُ اسْقِينَا» فَجَاءَتْ بِعُسٍّ دُونَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنْ شِئْتُمْ نِمْتُمْ عِنْدَنَا وَإِنْ شِئْتُمْ أَتَيْتُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَنِمْتُمْ فِيهِ» قَالَ فَنِمْنَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي آخِرِ اللَّيْلِ فَأَصَابَنِي نَائِمًا عَلَى بَطْنِي فَرَكَضَنِي بِرِجْلِهِ فَقَالَ «مَا لَكَ وَلِهَذِهِ النَّوْمَةِ هَذِهِ نَوْمَةٌ يَكْرَهُهَا اللَّهُ أَوْ يُبْغِضُهَا اللَّهُ»

    ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were in the ṣuffah after sunset and said: “O so-and-so, go with so-and-so; and O so-and-so, go with so-and-so,” until he had sent five, I being the fifth of them. Then he said: “Get up with me.” We did so and entered upon ʿĀʾishah—that was before the hijab was revealed. He said: “O ʿĀʾishah, feed us.” She brought some jashīshah. Then he said: “O ʿĀʾishah, feed us.” She brought some ḥays. Then he said: “O ʿĀʾishah, give us something to drink.” She brought a large cup and he drank. Then he said: “O ʿĀʾishah, give us something to drink.” She brought a smaller cup. Then he said: “If you wish, sleep with us; and if you wish, go to the mosque and sleep there.” He said: “So we slept in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us at the end of the night and found me sleeping on my belly. He kicked me with his foot and said: “What is it with you and this sleep? This is a sleep that Allah hates—or that Allah detests.”

    «لَا يَسْتَلْقِ الْإِنْسَانُ عَلَى قَفَاهُ وَيَضَعْ إِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى»

    ✧ "A person should not lie on his back and place one of his legs over the other."

    ✧ "He saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lying on his back in the mosque, placing one of his legs over the other."

    نَهَى عَنِ اشْتِمَالِ الصَّمَّاءِ وَالِاحْتِبَاءِ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ وَأَنْ يَرْفَعَ الرَّجُلُ إِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى وَهُوَ مُسْتَلْقٍ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ»

    ✧ He prohibited wrapping oneself in a single garment with no opening, sitting with legs drawn up wrapped in one cloth, and that a man raises one of his legs over the other while lying on his back."

    نَهَى أَنْ يَسْتَلْقِيَ الرَّجُلُ وَيَثْنِيَ إِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى»

    ✧ He prohibited that a man lies on his back and folds one of his legs over the other."

    «إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ نُبَاحَ كِلَابٍ أَوْ نُهَاقَ حُمْرٍ بِاللَّيْلِ فَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَ مَا لَا تَرَوْنَ وَأَقِلُّوا الْخُرُوجَ إِذَا هَدَأَتِ الرِّجْلُ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ جَلَّ وَعَلَا يَبُثُّ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ فِي لَيْلِهِ مَا شَاءَ وَأَجِيفُوا الْأَبْوَابَ وَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَا يَفْتَحُ بَابًا أُجِيفَ وَذُكِرَ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَغَطُّوا الْجِرَارَ وَاكْفَئُوا الْآنِيَةَ وَأَوْكُوا الْقِرَبَ»

    ✧ If you hear the barking of dogs or the braying of donkeys at night, seek refuge in Allah, for they see what you do not see. And reduce going out when feet are still, for Allah, Mighty and Exalted, sends forth of His creation in His night whatever He wills. And close the doors and mention the name of Allah over them, for Satan does not open a door that has been closed and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned. And cover the water skins, turn over the vessels, and tie the waterskins.
