The Prophet [SAW] said: "I have been commanded to fight the idolators until they bear witness to La ilaha illallah (there is none worthy of worship except Allah) and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. If they bear witness to La ilaha illallah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and they pray as we pray and face our Qiblah, and eat our slaughtered animals, then their blood and wealth becomes forbidden to us except for a right that is due." Abu Bakr said: 'The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they bear witness to La ilaha illallah (there is none worthy of worship except Allah) and that I am the Messenger of Allah, and they establish Salah and pay Zakah." ✧ Some people from among the Arabs came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and became Muslims. Then they fell ill, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent them to milk camels to drink from their urine and milk. They stayed there, then went to the shepherd, a young slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and killed him and drove off the milk camels. They claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah, make thirsty whoever made the family of Muhammad ﷺ thirsty tonight." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent after them, and they were captured. He cut off their hands and feet and gouged out their eyes. Some narrators add more than others, except that Mu'awiyah said, meaning in this hadith, "They drove them to the land of polytheism."

O Allah, I make a covenant with You: if You deliver me from what I am in, I will come to Muhammad ﷺ and place my hand in his hand. I will surely find him pardoning and generous. He raised his head and looked at him three times, each time refusing. Then after three times, he accepted his pledge. Then he turned to his companions and said: “Was there not among you a righteous man who would stand up to this one when he saw me holding back my hand from his pledge and kill him?” They said: How could we know, O Messenger of Allah, what was in your heart? Why did you not signal to us with your eye? He said: “It is not proper for a prophet to have a treacherous eye.”

✧ There was a man from the Ansar who accepted Islam, then apostatized and joined the polytheists, then regretted it. He sent to his people: Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for me whether I can repent. His people came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: So-and-so regrets, and he ordered us to ask you whether there is repentance for him. Then it was revealed: {How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief} [Al 'Imran 86] up to His saying {Forgiving, Merciful} [Al-Baqarah 173]. So he sent to him and he accepted Islam.

"Whoever disbelieved in Allah after his belief, except him who is forced thereto and whose heart is at rest with Faith; but such as open their breasts to disbelief, on them is wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a great torment." "This was abrogated, and an exception was made, as Allah said: "Then, verily, your Lord for those who emigrated after they had been put to trials and thereafter strove hard and fought (for the Cause of Allah) and were patient, verily, your Lord afterward is, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." This was 'Abdullah bin Sa'd bin Abi As-Sarh who was the governor of Egypt and used to write to the Messenger of Allah [SAW]. The Shaitan misled him and he went and joined the unbelievers. ✧ A blind man lived during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He had a slave woman who bore him children, and he had from her two sons. She used to frequently disparage the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and insult him. He would rebuke her but she would not desist, and he would forbid her but she would not stop. One night she mentioned the Prophet ﷺ and fell to insulting him. I could not bear it, so I got up to a mattock and placed it on her belly and pressed it down and killed her. In the morning she was dead. That was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ. He gathered the people and said: “I adjure by Allah a man for whom I have a right and who has done what he has done except that he should stand.” The blind man came forward, stumbling. He said: O Messenger of Allah, I am her master. She was the mother of my child, and she was kind and gentle to me, and I had from her two sons like two pearls. But she used to frequently disparage you and insult you. I forbade her but she would not stop, and I rebuked her but she would not desist. Last night she mentioned you and fell to insulting you. Then a man with sunken eyes, prominent cheekbones, a thick beard, and a shaved head came forward and said: "O Muhammad, fear Allah." He said: "Who will obey Allah if I disobey Him? Does He entrust me with the people of the earth, and you do not trust me?" A man from the group asked to kill him, but he prevented him.
