✧ On the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted safety to the people except four men and two women. He said: “Kill them even if you find them clinging to the curtains of the Ka'bah: 'Ikrimah b. Abi Jahl, 'Abd Allah b. Khatal, Maqis b. Subabah, and 'Abd Allah b. Sa'd b. Abi Sarh.” As for 'Abd Allah b. Khatal, he was caught while clinging to the curtains of the Ka'bah. Sa'id b. Hurayth and 'Ammar b. Yasir raced to him; Sa'id beat 'Ammar, as he was the younger of the two men, and killed him. As for Maqis b. Subabah, the people caught him in the market and killed him. As for 'Ikrimah, he boarded a ship, and a storm struck them. The people of the ship said: Make your faith sincere, for your gods will not avail you anything here. 'Ikrimah said: By Allah, if nothing saves me in the sea except sincerity, then nothing will save me on land except it. O Allah, I make a covenant with You: if You deliver me from what I am in, I will come to Muhammad ﷺ and place my hand in his hand. I will surely find him pardoning and generous. He came and accepted Islam. As for 'Abd Allah b. Sa'd b. Abi Sarh, he hid with 'Uthman b. 'Affan. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the people to pledge allegiance, he brought him and stood him before the Prophet ﷺ. He said: O Messenger of Allah, accept the pledge of 'Abd Allah. He raised his head and looked at him three times, each time refusing. Then after three times, he accepted his pledge. Then he turned to his companions and said: “Was there not among you a righteous man who would stand up to this one when he saw me holding back my hand from his pledge and kill him?” They said: How could we know, O Messenger of Allah, what was in your heart? Why did you not signal to us with your eye? He said: “It is not proper for a prophet to have a treacherous eye.”
