أَخْبَرَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْمَنْبِجِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي رَوَّادٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى الثَّعْلَبِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ
أَنَّ قَوْمًا كَانُوا قَتَلُوا فَأَكْثَرُوا وَزَنَوْا فَأَكْثَرُوا وَانْتَهَكُوا فَأَتَوُا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالُوا يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنَّ الَّذِي تَقُولُ وَتَدَعُو إِلَيْهِ لَحَقٌّ لَو تُخْبِرُنَا أَنَّ لِمَا عَمِلْنَاهُ كَفَّارَةً فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ} [الفرقان 68] إِلَى {فَأُولَئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ وَكَانَ اللهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا} [الفرقان 70] قَالَ يُبَدَّلُ اللهُ بِشِرْكِهِمْ إِيمَانًا وَبِزِنَاهُمْ إِحْصَانًا وَنَزَلَتْ {قُلْ يَا عَبَّادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ} [الزمر 53] الْآيَةَ

✧ Some people had killed a lot, committed adultery a lot, and transgressed a lot. They came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Muhammad, what you say and call to is indeed true, if only you would tell us that there is expiation for what we have done." Then Allah revealed: {And those who do not call upon another god with Allah, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, and do not commit adultery} [al-Furqan 68] up to {Those – Allah will replace their evil deeds with good deeds, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful} [al-Furqan 70]. He said: "Allah will replace their polytheism with faith, and their adultery with chastity." And He revealed: {Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves} [al-Zumar 53] the verse.
