✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "While I was sleeping, I was brought a cup and drank from it. Then I gave what remained to Umar b. al-Khattab." They said: "What did you interpret it as, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Knowledge."

✧ From his father: The Prophet ﷺ was narrating and said: "While I was sleeping, I saw that I was brought a cup, and I drank from it until I saw the water flowing. Then I gave my leftover to 'Umar." They said, "What did you interpret it as, O Messenger of God ﷺ?" He said, "Knowledge."

The happiest of people with my intercession on the Day of Resurrection is the one who says 'There is no god but God' sincerely from his own self."

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ: He said: "Indeed, the example of the guidance and knowledge with which God sent me is like rain that falls on the earth. Some of it is good land that receives the water and produces abundant herbage and grass. Some of it is hard ground that holds the water, and God benefits people by it: they drink from it, give their animals to drink, and irrigate. And some of it is barren land that neither holds water nor produces herbage. That is the example of one who becomes learned in the religion of God, and he benefits from what God sent me with, and he learns and teaches; and the example of one who does not raise his head thereby and does not accept God's guidance with which I was sent."

✧ That he heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "May God have mercy on us and on Moses. Had he not been hasty and felt shy and been overcome by a sense of shame before his companion, and said, 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion' (Qur'an 18:76), he would have seen wonders from his companion." He said: When the Prophet ﷺ mentioned any prophet, he began with himself and said: "May God have mercy on us and on my brother Salih; may God have mercy on us and on my brother 'Ad." Then he said: "While Moses ﷺ was addressing his people one day, he said to them: 'There is no one on earth more knowledgeable than I.' So God revealed to him that there is on earth someone more knowledgeable than you, and the sign of that is that you should take a salted fish as provision. When you lose it, that is where he is. So he and his young servant set out until they reached the place where they were commanded. When they came to the rock, Moses ﷺ went off to seek, and his servant placed the fish on the rock, and it stirred and took its way into the sea, burrowing. His servant said: 'When the Prophet of God ﷺ comes, I will tell him.' But Satan made him forget. So they went on, and they experienced what a traveler experiences of fatigue and weariness, and he did not experience it until they had passed the place where they were commanded. Moses said to his servant: 'Bring us our meal; we have certainly met with fatigue from this journey of ours.' His servant said to him: 'O Prophet of God, did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish, and nothing made me forget to mention it except Satan, and it took its way into the sea wondrously.' He said: 'That is what we were seeking.' So they returned, retracing their footsteps, following the trail, until they reached the rock. Moses circled it and found a man wrapped in a garment. He greeted him, and he raised his head and said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'Moses.' He said: 'Moses of whom?' He said: 'Moses of the Children of Israel.' He said: 'What do you want?' He said: 'I have been told that you have knowledge, and I wanted to accompany you [361].' He said: 'You will not be able to have patience with me.' He said: 'You will find me, if God wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in any matter.' He said: 'How can you be patient about something you do not encompass in knowledge?' He said: 'I have been commanded to do so. You will find me, if God wills, patient.' He said: 'If you follow me, then do not ask me about anything until I myself mention it to you.' So they went on until they boarded a ship, and he left those in it and stayed behind to make a hole in it. Moses said to him: 'Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have done a grievous thing.' He said: 'Did I not say that you will not be able to have patience with me?' He said: 'Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me with difficulty in my affair.' So they went on until they came upon boys playing on the seashore, among them a boy, no one among the boys was more handsome or cleaner than he, and he killed him. Moses ﷺ was alarmed and said: 'Have you killed an innocent soul without a soul? You have done a terrible thing.' He said: 'Did I not tell you that you will not be able to have patience with me?' He said: So he was overcome by a sense of shame before his companion and felt shy, and said: 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have reached an excuse from me.' So they went on until they came to the people of a town, who were miserly, and Moses had been afflicted with exhaustion, but they did not offer them hospitality. They found in it a wall about to collapse, and he set it straight. Moses said to him, because of the exhaustion he had suffered: 'If you had wished, you could have taken a payment for it.' He said: 'This is the parting between me and you.' Then Moses took hold of the hem of his garment and said: 'Tell me.' He said: 'As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea, and behind them was a king who seized every ship by force. When he passed by it and saw it damaged, he left it, and its people patched it with a piece of wood and benefited from it. As for the boy, he was created on that day as a disbeliever, and love from his parents had been placed upon him. Had they disobeyed him in anything, he would have driven them to transgression and disbelief. So we wanted their Lord to replace him with someone better in purity and closer in mercy. Then his father lay with his mother, and she gave birth to one better than him in purity and closer in mercy. As for the house, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father was righteous. Your Lord wanted them to reach their full strength and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did not do it of my own accord. That is the interpretation of what you could not bear with patience.'"

✧ That he married the daughter of Abu Ihab. A woman from the people of Makkah came on the morning of his marriage and said: "I have nursed both of you." He asked the girl's family, and they denied that. So I rode to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was in Madinah and mentioned that to him. I said: "O Messenger of God, I asked the girl's family, and they denied that." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "How, when it has been said? How, when it has been said?" So he separated from her, and she married someone else.

✧ That he said to 'Amr b. Sa'id, who was Ibn al-'As, while he was sending expeditions to Makkah: "Permit me, O commander, to tell you a statement that the Messenger of God ﷺ made the day after the conquest. My ears heard it, my heart comprehended it, and my eyes saw him when the Messenger of God ﷺ spoke it. He praised God and extolled Him, then said: 'God has made Makkah sacred, and it is not the people who made it sacred. It is not lawful for anyone who believes in God and the Last Day to shed blood in it or to cut down a tree in it. If anyone seeks a concession by citing the fighting of the Messenger of God in it, then say: God permitted His Messenger but did not permit you. He only permitted me in it for a short time during the day, and its sanctity has returned today as it was yesterday. Let the one who is present convey to the one who is absent.'" It was said to Abu Shurayh: "What did 'Amr say to you?" He said: "I know that better than you, O Abu Shurayh. The sanctuary does not protect a sinner, nor one fleeing for blood, nor one fleeing for a crime."

My brothers among the Muhajirun were occupied with trading in the markets, and my brothers among the Ansar were occupied with working on their properties. I was a poor man among the poor of the Suffah, staying close to the Messenger of God ﷺ in order to fill my belly. I was present when they were absent, and I memorized when they forgot. ✧ While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man came forward with a pleasant face, good features, and a pleasant fragrance. We were amazed by his good looks, features, and fragrance, so he greeted the Prophet ﷺ and then stood up and asked, "Can I come closer, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes." So he came closer, then stood up and asked again, "Can I come closer, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Yes." He came even closer until his thigh was next to the thigh of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his leg was next to his leg. Then he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is faith?" He replied, "To believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Day of Judgment, and destiny, both good and bad." He said, "You have spoken the truth." We were amazed by his statement that he spoke the truth to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He replied, "To testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, give Zakat, fast in Ramadan, perform Hajj, and to cleanse oneself from impurity." He said, "You have spoken the truth." We were amazed by his affirmation of the Messenger of Allah's statement. Then he asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Ihsan?" He replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion, then know that He sees you." He said, "You have spoken the truth." We were amazed by his affirmation of the Messenger of Allah's statement. Then he turned back and left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go after the man." We searched for him but couldn't find him.
