✧ That he heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "May God have mercy on us and on Moses. Had he not been hasty and felt shy and been overcome by a sense of shame before his companion, and said, 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion' (Qur'an 18:76), he would have seen wonders from his companion." He said: When the Prophet ﷺ mentioned any prophet, he began with himself and said: "May God have mercy on us and on my brother Salih; may God have mercy on us and on my brother 'Ad." Then he said: "While Moses ﷺ was addressing his people one day, he said to them: 'There is no one on earth more knowledgeable than I.' So God revealed to him that there is on earth someone more knowledgeable than you, and the sign of that is that you should take a salted fish as provision. When you lose it, that is where he is. So he and his young servant set out until they reached the place where they were commanded. When they came to the rock, Moses ﷺ went off to seek, and his servant placed the fish on the rock, and it stirred and took its way into the sea, burrowing. His servant said: 'When the Prophet of God ﷺ comes, I will tell him.' But Satan made him forget. So they went on, and they experienced what a traveler experiences of fatigue and weariness, and he did not experience it until they had passed the place where they were commanded. Moses said to his servant: 'Bring us our meal; we have certainly met with fatigue from this journey of ours.' His servant said to him: 'O Prophet of God, did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish, and nothing made me forget to mention it except Satan, and it took its way into the sea wondrously.' He said: 'That is what we were seeking.' So they returned, retracing their footsteps, following the trail, until they reached the rock. Moses circled it and found a man wrapped in a garment. He greeted him, and he raised his head and said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'Moses.' He said: 'Moses of whom?' He said: 'Moses of the Children of Israel.' He said: 'What do you want?' He said: 'I have been told that you have knowledge, and I wanted to accompany you [361].' He said: 'You will not be able to have patience with me.' He said: 'You will find me, if God wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in any matter.' He said: 'How can you be patient about something you do not encompass in knowledge?' He said: 'I have been commanded to do so. You will find me, if God wills, patient.' He said: 'If you follow me, then do not ask me about anything until I myself mention it to you.' So they went on until they boarded a ship, and he left those in it and stayed behind to make a hole in it. Moses said to him: 'Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have done a grievous thing.' He said: 'Did I not say that you will not be able to have patience with me?' He said: 'Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me with difficulty in my affair.' So they went on until they came upon boys playing on the seashore, among them a boy, no one among the boys was more handsome or cleaner than he, and he killed him. Moses ﷺ was alarmed and said: 'Have you killed an innocent soul without a soul? You have done a terrible thing.' He said: 'Did I not tell you that you will not be able to have patience with me?' He said: So he was overcome by a sense of shame before his companion and felt shy, and said: 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have reached an excuse from me.' So they went on until they came to the people of a town, who were miserly, and Moses had been afflicted with exhaustion, but they did not offer them hospitality. They found in it a wall about to collapse, and he set it straight. Moses said to him, because of the exhaustion he had suffered: 'If you had wished, you could have taken a payment for it.' He said: 'This is the parting between me and you.' Then Moses took hold of the hem of his garment and said: 'Tell me.' He said: 'As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea, and behind them was a king who seized every ship by force. When he passed by it and saw it damaged, he left it, and its people patched it with a piece of wood and benefited from it. As for the boy, he was created on that day as a disbeliever, and love from his parents had been placed upon him. Had they disobeyed him in anything, he would have driven them to transgression and disbelief. So we wanted their Lord to replace him with someone better in purity and closer in mercy. Then his father lay with his mother, and she gave birth to one better than him in purity and closer in mercy. As for the house, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father was righteous. Your Lord wanted them to reach their full strength and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did not do it of my own accord. That is the interpretation of what you could not bear with patience.'"
