✧ Indeed Allah, exalted is He, is good and loves the good, clean and loves cleanliness, generous and loves generosity, magnanimous and loves magnanimity, so clean your courtyards and do not resemble the Jews who gather rubbish in their homes."

عَمَّنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ غَدِيرِ خُمٍّ بِعِمَامَةٍ سَدَلَهَا خَلْفِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى أَيَّدَنِي يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ وَحُنَيْنٍ بِمَلَائِكَةٍ يَعْتَمُّونَ هَذِهِ الْعِمَامَةَ، وَقَالَ: " إِنَّ الْعِمَامَةَ حَاجِزَةٌ بَيْنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْإِيمَانِ... الْحَدِيثَ.
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turbaned me on the day of Ghadir Khumm with a turban and let it hang down behind me, then he said: 'Indeed Allah, exalted is He, supported me on the day of Badr and Hunayn with angels wearing this turban.' And he said: 'Indeed the turban is a barrier between disbelief and faith...' and he mentioned the rest of the hadith.

كَانَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ جَالِسًا مَعَ كَعْبٍ ؓ، [فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ ]: بِئْسَ الثَّوْبُ ثَوْبُ الْخُيَلَاءِ. فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ ؓ: أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، قَالَ: إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ إِنِّي لَأَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ: مَنْ لَبِسَ ثَوْبَ خُيَلَاءَ لَمْ يَنْظُرِ اللهُ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَضَعَهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ كَبُرَ. فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ ؓ: " بِئْسَ الْقَلْبُ قَلْبُ السَّمِينِ، فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ ؓ: أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَ: لَا. قَالَ كَعْبٌ ؓ: إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ. إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ تَعَالَى: مَثَلُ السَّمِينِ وَقَلْبِ الْمَهْزُولِ كَمَثَلِ شَاةٍ سَمِينَةٍ وَشَاةٍ مَهْزُولَةٍ أَصَابَهُمَا الْمَطَرُ فَخَلَصَ إِلَى قَلْبِ الْمَهْزُولَةِ، وَلَمْ يَخْلُصْ إِلَى قَلْبِ السَّمِينَةِ. فَقَالَ أَبُو لُبَابَةَ ؓ: [مَنْ يَعْبُدُ اللهَ] كَفَاهُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْمُؤْنَةَ، فَقَالَ كَعْبٌ ؓ: أَسَمِعْتَهُ مِنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ؟ فَقَالَ: لَا. فَقَالَ: إِنِّي لَا أَرُدُّ عَلَيْكَ عِلْمَكَ، وَإِنِّي لَأَجِدُ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ تَعَالَى: مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَعْبُدُ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَّا ضَمِنَ اللهُ تَعَالَى السَّمَاءَ وَالْأَرْضَ بِرِزْقِهِ حَتَّى يَمُوتَ أَوْ [مَا] عَاشَ ".
✧ Abu Lubabah was sitting with Ka'b ؓ, [and Abu Lubabah said]: 'How bad is the garment of pride.' Ka'b ؓ said: 'Did you hear it from the Prophet ﷺ?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'I do not reject your knowledge. I find in the Book of Allah: Whoever wears a garment of pride, Allah will not look at him until he takes it off, even if it is precious.' Then Abu Lubabah ؓ said: 'How bad is the heart of the fat one.' Ka'b ؓ said: 'Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'No.' Ka'b ؓ said: 'I do not reject your knowledge. I find in the Book of Allah, exalted is He: The example of the fat one and the heart of the emaciated one is like that of a fat sheep and an emaciated sheep upon which rain fell, and it reached the heart of the emaciated one but did not reach the heart of the fat one.' Then Abu Lubabah ؓ said: '[Whoever worships Allah], Allah, mighty and majestic is He, will suffice him in his needs.' Ka'b ؓ said: 'Did you hear it from the Prophet ﷺ?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'I do not reject your knowledge. I find in the Book of Allah, exalted is He: There is no servant who worships Allah, mighty and majestic is He, except that Allah, exalted is He, guarantees the heaven and the earth for his provision until he dies or [as long as] he lives.'"

بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ خَرَجَ فِي بُرْدَيْنِ، فَاخْتَالَ فِيهِمَا، فَأَمَرَ اللهُ [تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى] الْأَرْضَ فَأَخَذَتْهُ فَهُوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
✧ While a man from those before you went out in two garments and strutted in them, Allah [blessed and exalted is He] commanded the earth and it seized him, and he will sink in it until the Day of Resurrection.

خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ وَفِيهِ: وَمَنْ لَبِسَ ثَوْبًا فَاخْتَالَ فِيهِ خُسِفَ بِهِ مِنْ شَفِيرِ جَهَنَّمَ فَيُجَلْجِلُ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ؛ لِأَنَّ قَارُونَ لَبِسَ حُلَّةً فَاخْتَالَ، فَخُسِفَ بِهِ فَهُوَ يُجَلْجِلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a sermon and mentioned the hadith, and in it: 'Whoever wears a garment and struts in it, he will be swallowed up from the edge of Hell and will sink in it as long as the heavens and the earth endure; because Qarun wore a fine garment and strutted, and he was swallowed up, and he will sink in it until the Day of Resurrection.'

✧ A man came walking in two garments of his, having let his waist-wrapper trail, looking at his two sides, and he was swaggering, when Allah, exalted is He, caused the earth to swallow him, and he will be sinking in it until the Day of Resurrection.

كُنْتُ أَقُودُهُ فِي زُقَاقِ أَبِي لَهَبٍ، وَقَالَ: يَا كُرَيْبُ ! بَلَغْنَا مَكَانَ كَذَا وَكَذَا ؟ قُلْتُ: أَنْتَ الْآنَ عِنْدَهُ، فَقَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ؓ قَالَ: بَيْنَا أَنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ إِذَا أَقْبَلَ رَجُلٌ يَتَبَخْتَرُ فِي بُرْدَيْنِ وَيَنْظُرُ إِلَى عِطْفَيْهِ قَدْ أَعْجَبَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ إِذْ خُسِفَ بِهِ الْأَرْضُ فِي هَذَا الْمَوْطِنِ، فَهُوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ".
✧ I was leading him in the alley of Abu Lahab, and he said: O Kurayb! Have we reached such-and-such a place? I said: You are now at it. He said: Al-‘Abbas b. ‘Abd al-Muttalib ؓ narrated to me, saying: While I was with the Prophet ﷺ in this spot, a man came swaggering in two garments, looking at his two sides, having been impressed with himself, when the earth swallowed him in this very place, and he will be sinking in it until the Day of Resurrection."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man dragging his waist-wrapper, so he said to him: Raise your waist-wrapper, for Allah does not love the arrogant. He said: O Messenger of Allah, my shanks are thin. He said: That is uglier than what is in your shanks.

✧ The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who wore (fine clothes) did not criticize those who did not wear (them), and those who did not wear (them) did not criticize those who wore (them).

رَأَى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ رَجُلًا سَيِّئَ الْهَيْئَةِ، فَقَالَ: أَلَكَ مَالٌ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الْمَالِ. قَالَ ﷺ: فَلْيُرَ أَثَرُهُ عَلَيْكَ ; فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى يُحِبُّ أَنْ يَرَى أَثَرَ النِّعْمَةِ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ وَيَكْرَهُ الْبُؤْسَ وَالتَّبَاؤُسَ ".
✧ The Prophet ﷺ saw a man of disheveled appearance, so he said: Do you have wealth? He said: Yes, of various kinds of wealth. He ﷺ said: Then let its effect be seen on you, for Allah, exalted is He, loves to see the effect of His blessing on His servant and hates wretchedness and feigning wretchedness."

أَعْرَسْتُ فِي عَهْدِ أَبِي، فَأَذِنَ النَّاسَ، فَكَانَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ فِي مَنْ أَذِنَ، وَقَدْ سَتَرُوا بِنِجَادٍ أَخْضَرَ، [فَأَقْبَلَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ فَدَخَلَ - وَأَبِي قَائِمٌ - فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَأَى الْبَيْتَ مُسَتَّرًا بِنِجَادٍ أَخْضَرَ] فَقَالَ: يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ، أَتَسْتُرُونَ الْجُدُرَ ؟، فَقَالَ أَبِي: - وَاسْتَحْيَا - يَا أَبَا أَيُّوبَ، غَلَبَنَا النِّسَاءُ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ خَشِيتَ أَنْ يَغْلِبَهُ النِّسَاءُ فَلَمْ أَخْشَى أَنْ يَغْلِبْنَكَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " وَاللهِ لَا أَطْعَمُ لَكَ طَعَامًا، وَلَا أَدْخُلُ لَكُمْ بَيْتًا ثُمَّ خَرَجَ ".
✧ I got married during the time of my father, so he invited the people, and Abu Ayyub was among those he invited. They had hung green curtains, so Abu Ayyub came and entered—while my father was standing—and he looked and saw the house covered with green curtains. He said, 'O 'Abdullah, do you cover the walls?' My father said, feeling shy, 'O Abu Ayyub, the women overpowered us.' He said, 'Whoever I feared the women would overpower, I did not fear they would overpower you.' Then he said, 'By Allah, I will not eat food for you, nor will I enter a house for you,' and then he left.

دُعِيَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ إِلَى طَعَامٍ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ رَأَى الْبَيْتَ مُنَجَّدًا فَقَعَدَ خَارِجًا وَبَكَى، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: وَمَا يُبْكِيكَ ؟ فَقَالَ: " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ... فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ: فَرَأَى رَجُلًا ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَقَدْ رَقَعَ بُرْدَةً لَهُ [بِقِطْعَةِ] فَرْوٍ، فَاسْتَقْبَلَ مَطْلَعَ الشَّمْسِ وَقَالَ هَكَذَا بِيَدِهِ - وَصَفَ حَمَّادٌ بِيَدَيْهِ بِبَاطِنِ الْكَفَّيْنِ وَمَدَّ يَدَيْهِ - تَطَالَعَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا [أَيْ] أَقْبَلَتْ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنْ يَقَعَ عَلَيْنَا، وَيَغْدُوا أَحَدُكُمْ فِي حُلَّةٍ وَيَرُوحُ فِي أُخْرَى، وَتَسْتُرُونَ بُيُوتَكُمْ كَمَا تَسْتُرُونَ الْكَعْبَةَ ". قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ: كَيْفَ لَا أَبْكِي وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُكُمْ تَسْتُرُونَ بُيُوتَكُمْ كَمَا تَسْتُرُونَ الْكَعْبَةَ
✧ 'Abdullah b. Yazid was invited to a meal, and when he came he saw the house furnished (with curtains) and sat outside and wept. It was said to him, 'What makes you weep?' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ...' and he mentioned the hadith. He said: One day he saw a man who had patched his burdah with a piece of fur, so he faced the rising of the sun and said, gesturing with his hand—Hammad described it with his hands, palms inward and extended—'The world has appeared before you,' meaning it has advanced, 'until we thought it would fall upon us. One of you goes out in one fine garment and returns in another, and you cover your houses as you cover the Ka'bah.' 'Abdullah b. Yazid said, 'How can I not weep when I have seen you covering your houses as you cover the Ka'bah?'

أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ حُلَّةٌ وَثَوْبٌ شَامِيٌّ، فَكَسَانِي الْحُلَّةَ، وَكَسَا أُسَامَةَ ؓ الثَّوْبَ، فَرُحْتُ فِي حُلَّتِي، وَقَالَ ﷺ لِأُسَامَةَ: مَا صَنَعْتَ بِثَوْبِكَ ؟ قَالَ: كَسَوْتُهُ امْرَأَتِي، قَالَ ﷺ: فَمُرْهَا تَلْبَسْ تَحْتَهُ ثَوْبًا شَفِيفًا لَا يَصِفُ حَجْمَ عِظَامِهَا لِلرِّجَالِ
✧ A fine garment and a Syrian cloth came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he clothed me with the fine garment and clothed Usamah ؓ with the cloth. I went out in my fine garment, and he ﷺ said to Usamah, 'What did you do with your cloth?' He said, 'I clothed my wife with it.' He ﷺ said, 'Tell her to wear underneath it a thin garment that does not describe the size of her bones to men.'

سَأَلْتُهُ وَأَنَا مُخَلَّقٌ فَقَالَ لِي: اذْهَبْ فَاغْتَسِلْ فَذَهَبْتُ فَاغْتَسَلْتُ ثُمَّ رَجَعْتُ، فَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثًا، قَالَ: فَذَهَبْتُ فَوَقَعْتُ فِي بِئْرٍ وَأَخَذْتُ نَشْفَةً - يَعْنِي حَجَرًا - فَجَعَلْتُ أَبْتَغِي - يَعْنِي الْوُضُوءَ - ثُمَّ اغْتَسَلْتُ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: هَاتِ حَاجَتَكَ
✧ I asked him while I was perfumed with khalouq, and he said to me, 'Go and perform ghusl.' So I went and performed ghusl, then returned. He did the same three times. He said: Then I went and fell into a well, and I took a dry stone and began to seek water for wudu, then I performed ghusl and came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, 'State your need.'

ذَهَبْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى يَهُودِ بَنِي قَيْنُقَاعَ، فَأَبْصَرَ رَجُلًا مُتَخَلِّقًا فَقَبَضَ يَدَهُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، لَعَلَّهُ عَرُوسٌ، قَالَ ﷺ: وَإِنْ، اذْهَبْ فَاغْسِلْهُ ثُمَّ انْهَكْهُ، ثُمَّ اغْسِلْهُ ثُمَّ انْهَكْهُ [ثُمَّ اغْسِلْهُ ثُمَّ انْهِكْهُ]
✧ I went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the Jews of Banu Qaynuqa', and he saw a man perfumed with khalouq, so he withdrew his hand. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, perhaps he is a bridegroom.' He ﷺ said, 'Even so. Go and wash it off him, then scrub him, then wash it off him, then scrub him, [then wash it off him, then scrub him].'

✧ He came to the Prophet ﷺ on the day of the conquest of Makkah to pledge allegiance to him, and he saw that his hand was perfumed with khalouq, so he withdrew his hand. A man said to him, 'May your mother be bereft of you! The Prophet ﷺ withdrew his hand from you only because it is perfumed with khalouq.' So he washed his hand and then came to the Prophet ﷺ and pledged allegiance to him.

✧ A young man came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing a saffron-dyed cloak, and the Messenger ﷺ said: "If this were under the pot of your family, it would be better for you." So the young man went away and then came to the Prophet ﷺ the next morning, and he said: "What did you do with your garment?" He said: "I did what you commanded me." He ﷺ said: "That is not what I commanded you; why did you not give it to some of your womenfolk?"

خَرَجَتْ خَيْلٌ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمِعَ بِهَا أُكَيْدِرُ دُومَةَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ: " ثُمَّ [إِنَّ] أُكَيْدِرَ أَخْرَجَ قُبَاءً مَنْسُوجًا بِالذَّهَبِ مِمَّا كَانَ كِسْرَى يَكْسُوهُمْ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: ارْجِعْ بِقُبَاكَ فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَلْبَسُ هَذَا فِي الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا حُرِمَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ، فَرَجَعَ بِهِ فَلَمَّا أَتَى مَنْزِلَهُ وَجَدَ فِي نَفْسِهِ أَنْ يَرُدَّ [عَلَيْهِ] هَدِيَّتَهُ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ يَشُقُّ عَلَيْنَا أَنْ يُرَدَّ هَدِيَّتُنَا فَاقْبَلْ مِنِّي هَدِيَّتِي، فَقَالَ: انْطَلِقْ فَادْفَعْهُ إِلَى عُمَرَ ؓ، وَقَدْ كَانَ عُمَرُ ؓ سَمِعَ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِيهِ، فَبَكَى وَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ، وَظَنَّ أَنْ قَدْ لَحِقَهُ شَقَاءٌ، فَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: أَحَدَثَ فِيَّ شَيْءٌ ؟ قُلْتُ: فِي هَذَا الْقُبَاءِ مَا سَمِعْتُ، ثُمَّ بَعَثْتَ بِهِ إِلَيَّ، فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فِيهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ ﷺ: " مَا بَعَثْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهُ، وَلَكِنْ تَبِيعَهُ فَتَسْتَعِينَ بِثَمَنِهِ
✧ The horses of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and Ukaydir of Dumah heard of them. Then he mentioned the hadith, saying: "Then Ukaydir brought out a cloak woven with gold, of the kind that Khosrau used to clothe them. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Return with your cloak, for no one wears this in this world except that he will be deprived of it in the Hereafter.' So he returned with it. When he reached his home, he felt uneasy about returning his gift, so he came back and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we are a household who find it difficult to have our gifts returned, so accept my gift from me.' He said: 'Go and give it to 'Umar ؓ.' 'Umar ؓ had heard what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about it, so he wept and his eyes shed tears, and he thought that misery had befallen him. He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'Has something new happened concerning me?' He said: 'In this cloak, what I heard; then you sent it to me.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until he put his hand over his mouth, then he ﷺ said: 'I did not send it to you to wear it, but to sell it and use its price.'"

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُهْدِيَ لَهُ حُلَّةُ حَرِيرٍ سِيَرَاءُ، فَبَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَى عَلِيٍّ ؓ، فَرَاحَ وَهِيَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِعَلِيٍّ ؓ: إِنِّي لَا أَرْضَى لَكَ إِلَّا مَا أَرْضَى لِنَفْسِي، إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا، إِنِّي كَسَوْتُهَا لِتَجْعَلَهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ الْفَوَاطِمِ
✧ A striped silk garment was gifted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sent it to 'Ali ؓ. He went out wearing it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to 'Ali ؓ: "I am not pleased for you except with what I am pleased for myself. I did not clothe you with it to wear it; I clothed you with it so that you could make it into head covers among the Fatimahs."

✧ Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf entered with his son Muhammad, who was wearing a silk shirt. 'Umar ؓ stood up, grabbed him by the collar, and tore it. Abd al-Rahman said: 'May Allah forgive you, you frightened the boy and terrified him.' He said: 'You clothe them in silk?' He said: 'Yet I wear silk, and they are like you.'

شَكَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ ؓ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ كَثْرَةَ الْقَمْلِ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَتَأْذَنُ لِي أَنْ أَلْبَسَ قَمِيصًا مِنْ حَرِيرٍ ؟ فَأَذِنَ لَهُ، فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ، وَقَامَ عُمَرُ ؓ. أَتَاهُ بِابْنِهِ وَأَبِي سَلَمَةَ، وَعَلَيْهِ قَمِيصٌ مِنْ حَرِيرٍ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: مَا هَذَا ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ بِيَدِهِ فِي جَيْبِ الْقَمِيصِ فَشَقَّهُ إِلَى أَسْفَلِهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ ؓ: أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّهُ أَحَلَّهُ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا أَحَلَّهُ لَكَ ; لِأَنَّكَ شَكَوْتَ الْقَمْلَ، فَأَمَّا غَيْرُكَ فَلَا
✧ 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf ؓ complained to the Prophet ﷺ about an abundance of lice, and said, "O Messenger of God, do you permit me to wear a shirt of silk?" He permitted him. When the Messenger of God ﷺ and Abu Bakr ؓ passed away and 'Umar ؓ became caliph, he ['Abd al-Rahman] came to him with his son and Abu Salama, wearing a shirt of silk. 'Umar ؓ said, "What is this?" Then he put his hand into the collar of the shirt and tore it down to its bottom. 'Abd al-Rahman ؓ said to him, "Do you not know that the Messenger of God ﷺ permitted it for me?" He said, "He only permitted it for you because you complained of lice. As for others, no."

✧ Abu Umamah As'ad b. Zurarah ؓ entrusted the Messenger of God ﷺ with my mother and my maternal aunt. Jewelry containing gold and pearls, called ri'ath, was brought to him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ adorned them with those ri'ath. I later saw that jewelry in the possession of my family.

He said, "My Lord commanded me to do this." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "God Almighty commanded me to let my beard grow and trim my moustache."

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ would not change his gray hair. He was asked about that: "Why do you not change it, when Abu Bakr ؓ used to change it?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Whoever grows gray in Islam, it will be light for him on the Day of Resurrection,' and I will not change my gray hair."

قَتَلَ عَقِيلٌ ؓ يَوْمَ مُؤْتَةَ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، فَأَخَذَ خَاتَمَهُ وَجَارِيَةً كَانَتْ مَعَهُ، فَأَتَى بِهِمَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ الْخَاتَمَ، فَجَعَلَهُ فِي إِصْبَعِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: لَوْلَا هَذَا التِّمْثَالُ، قَالَ: فَنَفَلَ عَقِيلًا ؓ خَاتَمَهُ وَجَارِيَتَهُ
✧ Aqil ؓ killed a man from the polytheists on the day of Mu'tah, and took his ring and a slave girl who was with him. He brought them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who took the ring and put it on his finger, then said: 'Were it not for this image (i.e., engraving).' He said: So he gave Aqil ؓ his ring and his slave girl as spoils.

دَخَلَ زِيَادٌ عَلَى عُمَرَ ؓ، وَفِي يَدِهِ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: " اتَّخَذْتُمْ حِلَقَ الذَّهَبِ. قَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى ؓ: لَكِنَّ خَاتَمِي مِنْ حَدِيدٍ. فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: ذَلِكَ أَنْتَنُ وَأَخْبَثُ، مَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ مُتَخَتِّمًا فَلْيَتَخَتَّمْ بِخَاتَمٍ [مِنْ] فِضَّةٍ
✧ Ziyad entered upon Umar ؓ with a gold ring on his hand. Umar ؓ said: 'You have adopted gold rings.' Abu Musa ؓ said: 'But my ring is of iron.' Umar ؓ said: 'That is fouler and more evil. Whoever of you wears a ring, let him wear a silver ring.'

✧ We entered upon an old man called Muhajir, and I had on a sandal with two qibals (straps). He said: 'I had left it because of its being well-known.' So he said: 'What is this?' I said: 'I wanted to leave it because of its being well-known.' He said: 'Do not leave it, for the sandal of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was like this.'

أَتَيْتُ حَذَّاءً بِالْمَدِينَةِ، فَقُلْتُ: احْذُ نَعْلِي، فَقَالَ: إِنْ شِئْتَ حَذَوْتُهَا هَكَذَا، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ حَذَوْتُهَا كَمَا رَأَيْتَ نَعْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، [فَقُلْتُ: وَأَنْتَ رَأَيْتَ نَعْلَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ] ؟ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُهَا فِي بَيْتِ فَاطِمَةَ ؓ، قَالَ: حَسِبْتُهُ قَالَ: فِي بَيْتِ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قُلْتُ: احْذُهَا كَمَا رَأَيْتَ نَعْلَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ. قَالَ: فَحَذَاهَا لَهَا قِبَالَانِ، فَقَالَ: وَقَدِمْتُ وَقَدْ أَخَذَهَا ابْنُ سِيرِينَ
✧ I came to a shoemaker in Madinah and said: 'Make my sandal.' He said: 'If you wish, I will make it like this, and if you wish, I will make it as I saw the sandal of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' [I said: 'And did you see the sandal of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?'] He said: 'I saw it in the house of Fatimah ؓ.' He (the narrator) said: 'I think he said: In the house of Fatimah bt. Ubayd Allah b. Abbas.' I said: 'Make it as you saw the sandal of the Prophet ﷺ.' He said: 'So he made it with two qibals.' He said: 'And when I arrived, Ibn Sirin had already taken it.'

✧ A camel that had been branded on its face was brought past the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'If only the owners of this camel had kept the fire away from this animal.' He said: 'I said: I will brand in the farthest place from its face.' He said: 'So I branded on the root of the tail.'
