✧ Branding animals and castration

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، ثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ يَحْيَى، عَنْ يَحْيَى، وَعِيسَى ابْنَيْ طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِمَا، قَالَ:

مُرَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِبَعِيرٍ قَدْ وُسِمَ فِي وَجْهِهِ، فَقَالَ: لَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ هَذَا الْبَعِيرِ عَزَلُوا النَّارَ عَنْ هَذِهِ الدَّابَّةِ. فَقَالَ: قُلْتُ: لَأَسِمَنَّ فِي أَبْعَدِ مَكَانٍ مِنْ وَجْهِهَا، قَالَ: فَوَسَمْتُ فِي عَجْبِ الذَّنَبِ

Translation

✧ A camel that had been branded on its face was brought past the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: 'If only the owners of this camel had kept the fire away from this animal.' He said: 'I said: I will brand in the farthest place from its face.' He said: 'So I branded on the root of the tail.'
