al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2703

✧ The virtue of one who grows gray in Islam and does not dye

أَخْبَرَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ عَجْلَانَ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ:

إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ كَانَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ شَيْبَهُ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ: لِمَ لَا تُغَيِّرُ، وَقَدْ كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ يُغَيِّرُ ؟ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: مَنْ شَابَ شَيْبَةً فِي الْإِسْلَامِ كَانَتْ لَهُ نُورًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، وَمَا أَنَا بِمُغَيِّرٍ شَيْبَتِي

Translation

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ would not change his gray hair. He was asked about that: "Why do you not change it, when Abu Bakr ؓ used to change it?" He said: "I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'Whoever grows gray in Islam, it will be light for him on the Day of Resurrection,' and I will not change my gray hair."
