يُعَقُّ عَنِ الْغُلَامِ شَاتَانِ مُكَافِئَتَانِ وَعَنِ الْجَارِيَةِ شَاةٌ. قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ: فَعَقَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ ؓ شَاتَيْنِ شَاتَيْنِ يَوْمَ السَّابِعِ، وَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُمَاطَ عَنْ رَأْسِهِ الْأَذَى وَقَالَ: اذْبَحُوا عَلَى اسْمِ اللهِ وَقُولُوا: بِاسْمِ اللهِ وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُمَّ مِنْكَ وَلَكَ هَذِهِ عَقِيقَةُ فُلَانٍ. قَالَتْ: وَكَانُوا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ تُؤْخَذُ قُطْنَةٌ فَتُجْعَلُ فِي دَمِ الْعَقِيقَةِ ثُمَّ تُوضَعُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ يُجْعَلَ مَكَانَ الدَّمِ خَلُوقًا
✧ For a boy, two sheep of equal age are slaughtered as aqiqah, and for a girl, one sheep. Aisha ؓ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered two sheep for al-Hasan and two for al-Husayn ؓ on the seventh day, and he ordered that the filth be removed from his head, and he said: 'Slaughter in the name of Allah, and say: In the name of Allah, and Allah is most great. O Allah, from You and to You, this is the aqiqah of so-and-so.' She said: In the Jahiliyyah, they would take a piece of cotton, dip it in the blood of the aqiqah, and place it on his head. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that khaluq be put in place of the blood.

إِنَّ يَحْيَى بْنَ يَعْمَرَ كَانَ يُفْتِي بِخُرَاسَانَ أَنَّ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا اشْتَرَى [الْأُضْحِيَّةَ]، وَأَسْمَاهَا، وَدَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ أَنْ يَكُفَّ عَنْ شَعَرِهِ وَأَظْفَارِهِ حَتَّى يُضَحِّيَ. قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِسَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ. فَقُلْتُ: عَمَّنْ ؟ قَالَ: عَنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ
✧ Yahya b. Ya'mar used to give fatwa in Khurasan that when a man buys [the sacrificial animal] and names it, and the ten (days) enter, he should refrain from his hair and nails until he sacrifices. Qatadah said: 'I mentioned that to Sa'id b. al-Musayyab, and he said: Yes.' I said: 'From whom?' He said: 'From the companions of Muhammad ﷺ.'

كَانَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْعَشْرُ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ شَعَرِهِ، حَتَّى كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَحْلِقَ الصِّبْيَانُ مِنَ الشَّعَرِ
✧ When the ten (days) entered, Ibn Sirin used to dislike a man taking from his hair, to the extent that he disliked boys shaving their hair.

إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِكَبْشَيْنِ أَمْلَحَيْنِ أَقْرَنَيْنِ عَظِيمَيْنِ مَوْجُوءَيْنِ فَأَضْجَعَ أَحَدَهُمَا، وَقَالَ: بِاسْمِ اللهِ وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُمَّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثُمَّ أَضْجَعَ الْآخَرَ، وَقَالَ: بِاسْمِ اللهِ وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُمَّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأُمَّتِهِ مَنْ شَهِدَ لَكَ بِالتَّوْحِيدِ وَشَهِدَ لِي بِالْبَلَاغِ
✧ Indeed, the Messenger of God ﷺ was brought two horned, large, castrated salt-and-white rams. He laid one of them down and said: 'In the name of God, and God is greatest. O God, [this is] on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.' Then he laid down the other and said: 'In the name of God, and God is greatest. O God, [this is] on behalf of Muhammad and his community—those who bear witness to Your oneness and bear witness to my conveying [the message].'

سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ؓ عَنِ الْبَقَرَةِ، وَالْبَعِيرِ، يُجْزِئُ عَنْ سَبْعَةٍ ؟ فَقَالَ: وَكَيْفَ ; أَوَلَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَنْفُسٍ ؟ قُلْتُ: إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ [الَّذِينَ] بِالْكُوفَةِ أَفْتَوْنِي. فَقَالَ الْقَوْمُ: نَعَمْ قَدْ قَالَ ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ؓ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ ؓ: مَا شَعَرْتُ ".
✧ I asked Ibn 'Umar ؓ about a cow or a camel—does it suffice for seven? He said: 'How so? Does it have seven souls?' I said: 'The companions of Muhammad ﷺ who are in Kufa gave me this ruling.' The people said: 'Yes, the Messenger of God ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and 'Umar ؓ said that.' Ibn 'Umar ؓ said: 'I was not aware.'

✧ I asked Ibn 'Umar ؓ about a man who offers a cow as a sacrificial animal—may he sell its hide and give its price in charity? He said: 'There is no harm in that.'

✧ A man slaughtered before the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed on the Day of Sacrifice, and he ﷺ said: 'It will not suffice for you.' The man said: 'O Messenger of God, we have a jadha'ah.' He ﷺ said: 'It will suffice for you, but it will not suffice for anyone after you.'

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَدَخَلَ بِجَذَعٍ مِنَ الْمَعْزِ سَمِينٍ سَيِّدٍ، وَجَذَعٍ مِنَ الضَّأْنِ مَهْزُولٍ خَسِيسٍ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، هَذَا جَذَعٌ مِنَ الضَّأْنِ مَهْزُولٌ خَسِيسٌ، وَهَذَا جَذَعٌ مِنَ الْمَعْزِ سَمِينٌ سَيِّدٌ، وَهُوَ خَيْرُهُمَا، أَفَأُضَحِّي بِهِ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: ضَحِّ بِهِ فَإِنَّ اللهَ [يُحِبُّ] الْخَيْرَ
✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and a man came and entered with a fat, excellent young goat and a lean, inferior young sheep. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, this is a lean, inferior young sheep, and this is a fat, excellent young goat, and it is the better of the two. Should I sacrifice it?' He ﷺ said: 'Sacrifice it, for Allah loves the better.'

✧ The Prophet ﷺ sacrificed two horned rams. When slaughtering the first, he said: 'On behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.' When slaughtering the second, he said: 'On behalf of those of my Ummah who believe in me and affirm me.'

إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ لِفَاطِمَةَ ؓ: قُومِي يَا فَاطِمَةُ فَاشْهَدِي أُضْحِيَّتَكِ، أَمَا إِنَّ لَكِ بِأَوَّلِ قَطْرَةٍ تَقْطُرُ مِنْ دَمِهَا مَغْفِرَةً لِكُلِّ ذَنْبٍ، أَمَا إِنَّهُ يُجَاءُ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِلُحُومِهَا وَدِمَائِهَا سَبْعِينَ ضِعْفًا، ثُمَّ يُوضَعُ فِي مِيزَانِكِ ". قَالَ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ ؓ: " أَهَذِهِ لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ خَاصَّةً، فَهُمْ أَهْلٌ لِمَا خُصُّوا بِهِ مِنْ خَيْرٍ، أَمْ لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَلِلنَّاسِ عَامَّةً ؟ قَالَ: بَلْ لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَلِلنَّاسِ [عَامَّةً] ".
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said to Fatimah ؓ: 'Arise, O Fatimah, and witness your sacrifice. Indeed, with the first drop of its blood that falls, you will have forgiveness for every sin. Indeed, it will be brought on the Day of Resurrection with its meat and blood seventy times over, then placed in your scale.' Abu Sa'id al-Khudri ؓ said: 'Is this for the family of Muhammad specifically, for they are worthy of the good they are singled out with, or for the family of Muhammad and the people generally?' He said: 'Rather, for the family of Muhammad and the people generally.'

شَهِدْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ بِالْمُصَلَّى قَالَ لِرَجُلَيْنِ: مَا عِنْدَكُمَا مَا تُضَحِّيَانِ بِهِ ؟ قَالَا: لَا، فَانْطَلَقَ بِهِمَا إِلَى مَنْزِلِهِ، وَأَخْرَجَ شَاتَهُ، قَالَ: تَقَبَّلَ اللهُ مِنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، وَمِنْ فُلَانٍ وَفُلَانٍ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَ كَبِدَهَا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْهَا، فَأَكَلُوا مِنْهَا، ثُمَّ جَزَّأَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَجْزَاءٍ، فَانْقَلَبَ الرَّجُلَانِ بِثُلُثَيْهَا، وَدَخَلَ بَيْتَ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ الثُّلُثُ
✧ I witnessed Abu Hurayrah ؓ at the prayer place say to two men: 'Do you have anything to sacrifice?' They said: 'No.' So he went with them to his house and brought out his sheep. He said: 'May Allah accept from Abu Hurayrah, and from so-and-so and so-and-so.' Then he took its liver or something from it, and they ate from it. Then he divided it into three parts, and the two men went away with two-thirds of it, and one-third entered the house of Abu Hurayrah ؓ.

إِنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ؓ عَنِ الْأُضْحِيَّةِ، فَقَالَ: اكْرَهْ وَاجْتَنِبِ الْعَوْرَاءَ، بَيِّنٌ عَوَرُهَا. وَالْعَرْجَاءَ بَيِّنٌ عَرَجُهَا، وَالْمَرِيضَةَ بَيِّنٌ مَرَضُهَا، وَالْمَهْزُولَةَ بَيِّنٌ هُزَالُهَا
✧ A man asked Ibn 'Umar ؓ about the sacrificial animal, and he said: 'Avoid and shun the one-eyed whose defect is clear, the lame whose lameness is clear, the sick whose sickness is clear, and the emaciated whose emaciation is clear.'

✧ 'Umar ؓ used to perform Hajj and not sacrifice.' Ibrahim said: 'They used to perform Hajj having their provisions and their gold with them, yet they would not sacrifice.'
