✧ “What brought you two out at this hour?” They said: By Allah, nothing brought us out except the pangs of hunger we feel in our bellies. He said: “By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing brought me out either except that. So get up.” They went until they came to the door of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. Abu Ayyub used to keep aside food or milk for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but that day he was late, and when he did not come at his usual time, he gave it to his family and went off to his palm grove to work. When they reached the door, his wife came out and said: Welcome to Allah's Prophet ﷺ and those with him. Allah's Prophet ﷺ said to her: “Where is Abu Ayyub?” He heard him while working in his palm grove and came running, saying: Welcome to Allah's Prophet ﷺ and those with him. O Prophet of Allah, this is not the usual time you come. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: “You are right.” He went and cut a bunch of dates from the palm tree, containing all kinds: dry dates, fresh ripe dates, and unripe dates. The Prophet ﷺ said: “I did not want this; could you not have picked only dry dates for us?” He said: O Prophet of Allah, I wanted you to eat from its dry dates, fresh dates, and unripe dates. And I will certainly slaughter something for you along with this. He said: “If you slaughter, do not slaughter a milk-giving animal.” So he took a young she-goat or a kid and slaughtered it, and said to his wife: Bake and knead for us; you know more about baking. He took the kid, cooked it, and roasted half of it. When the food was ready, it was placed before the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. He took some of the kid and placed it on a loaf, then said: “O Abu Ayyub, take this to Fatimah, for she has not had anything like this for days.” Abu Ayyub took it to Fatimah. When they had eaten and were satisfied, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Bread, meat, dry dates, unripe dates, and fresh dates.” His eyes filled with tears. “By the One in whose hand is my soul, this is the very bliss about which you will be questioned. Allah, Majestic and Exalted, said: 'Then you will surely be asked that Day about bliss' (Qur'an 102:8). This is the bliss about which you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection.” This weighed heavily on his companions, so he said: “Rather, when you attain something like this and reach out your hands, say: 'In the name of Allah.' And when you are satisfied, say: 'Praise be to Allah who has satisfied us, blessed us, and favored us. This is enough for it.'” When he rose, he said to Abu Ayyub: “Come to us tomorrow.” He never received a favor from anyone but loved to repay it. Abu Ayyub did not hear that, so Umar said: The Prophet ﷺ ordered you to come to him tomorrow. So he went to him the next day, and the Prophet ﷺ gave him his slave girl, saying: “O Abu Ayyub, treat her well, for we have seen only good from her while she was with us.” When Abu Ayyub brought her from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: I find no better fulfillment of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ instruction than to free her. So he freed her.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched us and appointed Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah as our commander to meet a caravan of Quraysh. He provisioned us with a sack of dates, finding nothing else for us. Abu 'Ubaydah would feed us one date at a time. I said, 'How did you manage with it?' He said, 'We would suck it as a child sucks, then drink water over it, and it sufficed us for our day until night. And we would beat the leaves of the mimosa flava tree with our sticks, then moisten them with water and eat them.' Then we set out, and there appeared to us on the seashore something like a huge sand dune. We came to it and found it was a creature called the sperm whale. Abu 'Ubaydah said, 'It is carrion.' Then he said, 'No, we are the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in the path of Allah, and you have been compelled by necessity, so eat.' We stayed with it for a month, and we were three hundred, until we grew fat. I saw us scooping fat from its eye socket with large vessels, and cutting pieces from it like an ox or the size of an ox. Abu 'Ubaydah took thirteen men from us and seated them in its eye socket. He took one of its ribs and stood it upright, then saddled the largest camel we had, and it passed under it. We provisioned ourselves with its meat and strips of dried meat. When we came to Madinah, we went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about that. He said, 'It is provision that Allah brought out for you. Do you have any of its meat with you to feed us?' So we sent some of it to him, and he ate it.

✧ He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched an expedition towards the coast and appointed Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah as our commander. They were three hundred, and I was among them. We set out until we were partway, and the provisions ran out. Abu 'Ubaydah ordered that the provisions of that army be collected all together, and it was a sack of dates. He rationed us little by little each day until it was exhausted, and none of us got more than one date at a time. I said, 'What does a single date avail?' He said, 'We felt its loss when it ran out.' Then we reached the sea, and there was a fish like a small hill. That army ate from it for eleven nights. Then Abu 'Ubaydah ordered that two of its ribs be taken, then ordered a mount to be saddled, and it passed under them without touching them.

He brought it, and the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Talhah squeezed it until something came out. The Prophet ﷺ wiped his forefinger with it and then wiped the loaf, and it swelled. He said, "In the name of Allah." The loaf swelled, and he kept doing that while the loaf swelled until I saw the loaf in the platter melting. Then he said, "Invite ten of my companions." I invited ten for him. He said: The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand in the middle of the loaf and said, "Eat, in the name of Allah." They ate from around the loaf until they were full.
