✧ “What brought you two out at this hour?” They said: By Allah, nothing brought us out except the pangs of hunger we feel in our bellies. He said: “By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing brought me out either except that. So get up.” They went until they came to the door of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. Abu Ayyub used to keep aside food or milk for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but that day he was late, and when he did not come at his usual time, he gave it to his family and went off to his palm grove to work. When they reached the door, his wife came out and said: Welcome to Allah's Prophet ﷺ and those with him. Allah's Prophet ﷺ said to her: “Where is Abu Ayyub?” He heard him while working in his palm grove and came running, saying: Welcome to Allah's Prophet ﷺ and those with him. O Prophet of Allah, this is not the usual time you come. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: “You are right.” He went and cut a bunch of dates from the palm tree, containing all kinds: dry dates, fresh ripe dates, and unripe dates. The Prophet ﷺ said: “I did not want this; could you not have picked only dry dates for us?” He said: O Prophet of Allah, I wanted you to eat from its dry dates, fresh dates, and unripe dates. And I will certainly slaughter something for you along with this. He said: “If you slaughter, do not slaughter a milk-giving animal.” So he took a young she-goat or a kid and slaughtered it, and said to his wife: Bake and knead for us; you know more about baking. He took the kid, cooked it, and roasted half of it. When the food was ready, it was placed before the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. He took some of the kid and placed it on a loaf, then said: “O Abu Ayyub, take this to Fatimah, for she has not had anything like this for days.” Abu Ayyub took it to Fatimah. When they had eaten and were satisfied, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Bread, meat, dry dates, unripe dates, and fresh dates.” His eyes filled with tears. “By the One in whose hand is my soul, this is the very bliss about which you will be questioned. Allah, Majestic and Exalted, said: 'Then you will surely be asked that Day about bliss' (Qur'an 102:8). This is the bliss about which you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection.” This weighed heavily on his companions, so he said: “Rather, when you attain something like this and reach out your hands, say: 'In the name of Allah.' And when you are satisfied, say: 'Praise be to Allah who has satisfied us, blessed us, and favored us. This is enough for it.'” When he rose, he said to Abu Ayyub: “Come to us tomorrow.” He never received a favor from anyone but loved to repay it. Abu Ayyub did not hear that, so Umar said: The Prophet ﷺ ordered you to come to him tomorrow. So he went to him the next day, and the Prophet ﷺ gave him his slave girl, saying: “O Abu Ayyub, treat her well, for we have seen only good from her while she was with us.” When Abu Ayyub brought her from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: I find no better fulfillment of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ instruction than to free her. So he freed her.
