✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched an expedition to the land of Juhaynah and appointed a man over them as commander. When their provisions ran out, their commander ordered that what remained of their provisions be collected, and he began rationing us one date at a time. I said, 'O Abu 'Abd Allah, what did a single date avail you?' He said, 'By Allah, when it was exhausted, we felt its loss. One of us would put it between his teeth and palate and suck it, and we would get leaves of trees and plants of the earth along with that, until we reached the seashore. Then Allah brought out for us a fish that the sea had cast up. We ate from it and cut strips of it. When we wanted to depart, our commander ordered that one of its ribs be taken, and its two ends were planted in the ground. Then he ordered a camel to be saddled, and it passed under it.'
