✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched us in a detachment of three hundred riders, with Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah as our commander, to lie in wait for a caravan of Quraysh. We stayed on the coast for half a month, and severe hunger struck us until we ate the leaves of the mimosa flava tree. So that army was called the Army of the Leaves. Then the sea cast up a creature called the sperm whale, and we ate from it for half a month until our bodies recovered. We also used its fat as ointment. Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah took one of its ribs, looked for the tallest camel in the army and the tallest man, and loaded him on it, and he passed under it. Sufyan said: Abu al-Zubayr said from Jabir: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a sack containing dates, and when it was exhausted, we felt its loss. A man would bring something. And we extracted from its eye sockets such-and-such amount of fat. When we came to the Prophet ﷺ, he asked us, 'Do you still have any of it with you?'
