✧ We asked 'Ali: "Do you have anything of revelation besides what is in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic?" He said: "No, by the One who split the grain and created the soul, I do not know of anything except understanding that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, gives a man in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, or what is in this sheet." He said: I said, "What is in it?" He said: "The blood money, the ransom of the captive, and a Muslim is not killed for an idolater."

✧ I asked 'A'isha about wiping over the leather socks. She said, "Ask 'Ali, for he used to travel with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So I asked him, and he said: "For the traveler three days and their nights, and for the resident one day and one night."

أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ ؓ اشْتَكَتْ مَا تَلْقَى مِنْ أَثَرِ الرَّحَى فِي يَدِهَا، فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِسَبْيٍ فَانْطَلَقَتْ، فَلَمْ تَجِدْهُ، وَلَقِيَتْ عَائِشَةَ ؓ فَأَخْبَرَتْهَا، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَخْبَرَتْهُ عَائِشَةُ بِمَجِيءِ فَاطِمَةَ إِلَيْهِ، فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا مَضَاجِعَنَا، فَذَهَبْنَا نَقُومُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " عَلَى مَكَانِكُمَا "، فَقَعَدَ بَيْنَنَا حَتَّى وَجَدْتُ بَرْدَ قَدَمَيْهِ عَلَى صَدْرِي، فَقَالَ: أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكُمَا خَيْرًا مِمَّا سَأَلْتُمَا، إِذَا أَخَذْتُمَا مَضَاجِعَكُمَا أَنْ تُكَبِّرَا اللهَ أَرْبَعًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، وَتُسَبِّحَا ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ وَتَحْمَدَاهُ، ثَلَاثًا وَثَلَاثِينَ، فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمَا مِنْ خَادِمٍ
✧ Fatima ؓ complained about what she suffered from the marks of the millstone on her hand. Some captives were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, so she went but did not find him. She met 'A'isha ؓ and told her. When the Prophet ﷺ came, 'A'isha told him about Fatima's coming to him. The Prophet ﷺ came when we had already taken to our beds, and we got up to rise, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stay where you are." He sat between us until I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. Then he said, "Shall I not teach you something better than what you asked for? When you take to your beds, say Allahu akbar thirty-four times, say subhan Allah thirty-three times, and say al-hamdu lillah thirty-three times. That is better for you than a servant."

✧ On the day of the Confederates, he was at one of the openings of the trench and said: "They kept us from the middle prayer until the sun set. May Allah fill their graves and their houses with fire," or "their graves and their bellies with fire."

شَهِدْتُ عُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيًّا ؓ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ، وَعُثْمَانُ يَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُتْعَةِ، أَوْ أَنْ يَجْمَعَ بَيْنَهُمَا، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ عَلِيٌّ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا، فَقَالَ: " لَبَّيْكَ بِعُمْرَةٍ وَحَجَّةٍ مَعًا، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: تَرَانِي أَنْهَى النَّاسَ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَأَنْتَ تَفْعَلُهُ ؟ ! قَالَ: " مَا كُنْتُ لِأَدَعَ سُنَّةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ لِقَوْلِ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ
✧ I witnessed 'Uthman and 'Ali ؓ between Makkah and Madinah while 'Uthman was forbidding tamattu' or combining the two. When 'Ali saw that, he entered ihram for both together and said, "Labbayk for an 'umra and a hajj together." 'Uthman said, "Do you see me forbidding the people something while you do it?" He said, "I would not abandon the sunna of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the saying of any person."

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي جِنَازَةٍ فَقَالَ: أَيُّكُمْ يَأْتِي الْمَدِينَةَ فَلَا يَدَعُ فِيهَا وَثَنًا إِلَّا كَسَرَهُ، وَلَا صُورَةً إِلَّا لَطَّخَهَا، وَلَا قَبْرًا إِلَّا سَوَّاهُ ؟ " فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَنَا، فَانْطَلَقَ الرَّجُلُ، فَكَأَنَّهُ هَابَ أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ فَرَجَعَ، فَانْطَلَقَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ: مَا أَتَيْتُكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ حَتَّى لَمْ أَدَعْ فِيهَا وَثَنًا إِلَّا كَسَرْتُهُ، وَلَا قَبْرًا إِلَّا سَوَّيْتُهُ، وَلَا صُورَةً إِلَّا لَطَّخْتُهَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: " مَنْ عَادَ لِصَنْعَةِ شَيْءٍ مِنْهَا "، فَقَالَ فِيهِ قَوْلًا شَدِيدًا، وَقَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ: " لَا تَكُنْ فَتَّانًا، وَلَا مُخْتَالًا، وَلَا تَاجِرًا، إِلَّا تَاجِرَ خَيْرٍ، فَإِنَّ أُولَئِكَ الْمَسْبُوقُونَ فِي الْعَمَلِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was at a funeral and said, "Which of you will go to Madinah and not leave there any idol but break it, any image but deface it, and any grave but level it?" A man from the group stood and said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." The man set out but seemed to be afraid of the people of Madinah and returned. Then 'Ali ؓ set out and returned, saying, "I did not come back to you, O Messenger of Allah, until I had left no idol but I broke it, no grave but I leveled it, and no image but I defaced it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever returns to making any of these," and he said concerning him a severe word. And he said to 'Ali, "Do not be a troublemaker, nor arrogant, nor a merchant—except a merchant of good, for those are the ones outstripped in deeds."

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Yemen, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you have sent me while I am a young man with little knowledge of many judicial matters.' He said, 'Then he struck his hand on my chest and said, "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will surely make firm your tongue and guide your heart."' So no judgment between two parties ever proved too difficult for me.

✧ 'Ali and 'Uthman ؓ met at 'Usfan. 'Uthman was forbidding mut'ah, so 'Ali said, 'What do you want with something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did—you forbid it?' 'Uthman said, 'Leave us alone.' 'Ali said, 'I cannot leave you alone.' When 'Uthman saw that, he entered ihram for both together.

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ، أَنَا وَرَجُلَانِ ; رَجُلٌ مِنَّا وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ - أَحْسَبُ - فَبَعَثَهُمَا وَجْهًا، وَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ فَعَالِجَا عَنْ دِينِكُمَا، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَخْرَجَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَأَخَذَ حَفْنَةً مِنْ مَاءٍ فَمَسَحَ بِهَا، ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ، فَرَآنَا أَنْكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدْخُلُ الْخَلَاءَ فَيَقْضِي الْحَاجَةَ، ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ، فَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ، وَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَلَا يَحْجُبُهُ - وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ: وَلَا يَحْجِزُهُ - عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةَ
✧ I entered upon 'Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ with two men—one from us and one from Banu Asad, I think. He sent the two of them on a mission and said, 'You are two sturdy fellows, so act stoutly in your religion.' Then he went to the privy, came out, took a handful of water and wiped with it, and began reciting the Qur'an. He saw that we found that strange, so he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would enter the privy, relieve himself, then come out and eat meat with us and recite the Qur'an, and nothing would prevent him—perhaps he said, "and nothing would hold him back"—from the Qur'an except major ritual impurity (janabah).'

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَعَثَ سَرِيَّةً وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَجُلًا، وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يُطِيعُوهُ، فَأَجَّجَ لَهُمْ نَارًا، وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَقْتَحِمُوهَا، فَهَمَّ قَوْمٌ أَنْ يَفْعَلُوا، وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ: إِنَّمَا فَرَرْنَا مِنَ النَّارِ، فَأَبَوْا، ثُمَّ قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَوْ دَخَلُوهَا لَمْ يَزَالُوا فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ، لَا طَاعَةَ لِبَشَرٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، إِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ sent out a military expedition and appointed a man as commander over them, and commanded them to obey him. He kindled a fire for them and ordered them to plunge into it. Some people were about to do so, but others said, 'We only fled from the Fire,' and they refused. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'If they had entered it, they would have remained in it until the Day of Resurrection. There is no obedience to any human being in disobedience to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Obedience is only in what is right.'

✧ That 'Ali ؓ said to a man who was giving a religious ruling permitting mut'ah: 'Look at what you are ruling! I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade mut'ah marriage and eating the meat of domesticated donkeys.'

✧ 'Ali ؓ gave a sermon and said: 'O people, carry out the prescribed punishments on your slaves, both those who are married and those who are not. A slave woman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ committed adultery, and he commanded me to flog her. I went to her and found that she had recently given birth, and I feared that if I flogged her she would die. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him, and he said: "You have done well."'

✧ When the House collapsed after Jurhum and Quraysh rebuilt it, when they wanted to place the Stone they disputed over who should place it. They agreed that the first person to enter from this gate would place it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered from the gate of Banu Shaybah, and he ordered a cloth to be brought and spread out. He took the Stone and placed it in the middle of it, and he ordered each clan to take hold of a side of the cloth and lift it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and placed it.

لَمَّا بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ حَفَرَ قَوْمٌ زُبْيَةً لِلْأَسَدِ، فَازْدَحَمَ النَّاسُ عَلَى الزُّبْيَةِ، وَوَقَعَ فِيهَا الْأَسَدُ، فَوَقَعَ فِيهَا رَجُلٌ، وَتَعَلَّقَ الرَّجُلُ بِرَجُلٍ، وَتَعَلَّقَ الْآخَرُ بِالْآخَرِ، حَتَّى صَارُوا أَرْبَعَةً، فَجَرَحَهُمُ الْأَسَدُ فِيهَا فَهَلَكُوا، وَحَمَلَ الْقَوْمُ السِّلَاحَ، فَكَادُوا أَنْ يَكُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ قِتَالٌ، قَالَ: فَأَتَيْتُهُمْ فَقُلْتُ: أَتَقْتُلُونَ مِائَتَيْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَجْلِ أَرْبَعَةِ أُنَاسٍ ؟ تَعَالَوْا أَقْضِ بَيْنَكُمْ بِقَضَاءٍ، فَإِنْ رَضِيتُمُوهُ فَهُوَ قَضَاءٌ بَيْنَكُمْ، وَإِنْ أَبَيْتُمْ رَفَعْتُمْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِالْقَضَاءِ، قَالَ: فَجَعَلَ لِلْأَوَّلِ رُبُعَ الدِّيَةِ، وَجَعَلَ لِلثَّانِي ثُلُثَ الدِّيَةِ، وَجَعَلَ لِلثَّالِثِ نِصْفَ الدِّيَةِ، وَجَعَلَ لِلرَّابِعِ الدِّيَةَ، وَجَعَلَ الدِّيَاتِ عَلَى مَنْ حَضَرَ الزُّبْيَةَ، عَلَى الْقَبَائِلِ الْأَرْبَعَةِ، فَسَخِطَ بَعْضُهُمْ وَرَضِيَ بَعْضُهُمْ، ثُمَّ قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَصُّوا عَلَيْهِ الْقِصَّةَ، فَقَالَ: " أَنَا أَقْضِي بَيْنَكُمْ "، فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ: فَإِنَّ عَلِيًّا قَدْ قَضَى بَيْنَنَا، فَأَخْبَرُوهُ بِمَا قَضَى عَلِيٌّ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: الْقَضَاءُ كَمَا قَضَى عَلِيٌّ
✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Yemen, some people dug a pit for a lion. People crowded around the pit, and the lion fell into it. A man fell in after it, and he grabbed hold of another man, and the other grabbed hold of yet another, until they became four. The lion mauled them in the pit and they died. The people took up arms and nearly fought among themselves. He said: I went to them and said: 'Would you kill two hundred men because of four people? Come, let me judge among you with a ruling. If you accept it, it will be a judgment between you, and if you refuse, you may take it up to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he is more entitled to judge.' He said: He gave the first man a quarter of the blood money, the second a third, the third a half, and the fourth the full blood money. He made the blood moneys payable by those who were present at the pit, upon the four tribes. Some of them were displeased and some were pleased. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him the story, and he said: 'I will judge between you.' A man said: 'But 'Ali has already judged between us.' They told him what 'Ali had ruled, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The ruling is as 'Ali ruled.'

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ sent me to Yemen, I said: 'You are sending me while I am young and have little knowledge of much of judicial matters.' He said: 'When the two litigants come to you, do not judge for the first until you hear what the other says. For when you hear what the other says, you will know how to judge. God, Mighty and Majestic, will make your tongue firm and guide your heart.' Ali said: 'After that, I continued to be a judge.'

✧ When al-Hasan b. Ali was born, I said: 'Name him Harb.' I had wanted to be called Abu Harb. The Messenger of God ﷺ came and called for him, and said: 'What have you named him?' We said: 'We named him Harb.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'No, he is al-Hasan.' When al-Husayn was born, we named him Harb. The Prophet ﷺ came and said: 'What have you named him?' We said: 'Harb.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'He is al-Husayn.'

✧ A man prayed beside me, and I heard him asking forgiveness for his parents, who had died as polytheists. I said: 'You ask forgiveness for your parents while they died as polytheists?' He said to me: 'Abraham asked forgiveness for his parents.' I did not know how to reply to him. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'And Abraham's asking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him...' [Quran 9:114].

شَهِدْتُ عَلِيًّا أُتِيَ بِدَابَّةٍ لِيَرْكَبَهَا، فَلَمَّا وَضَعَ رِجْلَهُ فِي الرِّكَابِ، قَالَ: بِاسْمِ اللهِ، فَلَمَّا اسْتَوَى عَلَى ظَهْرِهَا، قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، وَقَالَ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي، إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ ضَحِكْتَ ؟ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَعَلَ مِثْلَ مَا فَعَلْتُ، ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ ضَحِكْتَ ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَبَّكَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَعْجَبُ مِنْ عَبْدِهِ إِذَا قَالَ: اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي، يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ غَيْرِي
✧ I witnessed 'Ali when a mount was brought for him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said, "In the name of Allah." When he settled on its back, he said, "Praise be to Allah," three times, and he said, "Allah is greater," three times. Then he said, "Glory be to You! I have wronged myself, so forgive me; indeed none forgives sins but You." Then he laughed. I said, "O Commander of the Believers, what made you laugh?" He said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do the same as I did, then he laughed. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what made you laugh?' He said, 'Indeed your Lord, mighty and majestic, marvels at His servant when he says, "Forgive me my sins," knowing that no one forgives sins besides Me.'"

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was complaining of pain. I was saying, "O Allah, if my appointed time has come, then give me rest; if it is delayed, then lift me; and if it is a trial, then give me patience." He struck me with his foot and said, "What did you say?" I repeated it to him. Then he said, "O Allah, heal him," or he said, "O Allah, grant him well-being." 'Ali said: I never complained of that pain after that.

✧ A slave woman belonging to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ committed fornication. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to carry out the prescribed punishment on her. I went to her and found that her blood had not yet dried. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. He said, "When her blood dries, flog her. Carry out the prescribed punishments on those whom your right hands possess."

✧ 'Ali ؓ prayed Zuhr in al-Rahabah, then sat to attend to the people's needs until Asr arrived. Then a jug of water was brought to him. He poured a handful and washed his face and hands, and wiped his head and feet. Then he stood and drank the leftover water while standing. Then he said, "Some people dislike drinking while standing, but I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do the same as I did, and he said, 'This is the wudu of one who has not broken his ablution.'"

أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ، أُتِيَ بِكُرْسِيٍّ، فَقَعَدَ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ أُتِيَ بِكُوزٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ " فَغَسَلَ يَدَهُ ثَلَاثًا، ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ ثَلَاثًا مَعَ الِاسْتِنْشَاقِ بِمَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ، وَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلَاثًا بِيَدٍ وَاحِدَةٍ، وَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا، وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِي التَّوْرِ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ، وَأَقْبَلَ بِيَدَيْهِ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ، وَلَا أَدْرِي أَدْبَرَ بِهِمَا أَمْ لَا، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ ثَلَاثًا " ثُمَّ قَالَ: مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى طُهُورِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَهَذَا طُهُورُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ
✧ A chair was brought to 'Ali ؓ, and he sat on it. Then a jug of water was brought to him. He washed his hand three times, then rinsed his mouth three times and sniffed water three times with one handful, and washed his face three times with one hand, and washed his forearms three times. He placed his hand in the basin, then wiped his head, and brought his hands forward on his head — I do not know whether he also moved them backward. Then he washed his feet three times. Then he said, "Whoever would like to see the purification of the Prophet ﷺ, this is the purification of the Prophet ﷺ."

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي جِنَازَةٍ حَتَّى انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى بَقِيعِ الْغَرْقَدِ، فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَجَلَسْنَا حَوْلَهُ، فَأَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عُودًا فَنَكَتَ فِي الْأَرْضِ، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ، فَقَالَ: مَا مِنْ نَفْسٍ مَنْفُوسَةٍ إِلَّا قَدْ عُلِمَ - أَوْ كُتِبَ - مَقْعَدُهَا مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَقْعَدُهَا مِنَ النَّارِ، وَشَقِيَّةٌ أَوْ سَعِيدَةٌ "، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفَلَا نَدَعُ الْعَمَلَ وَنُقْبِلُ عَلَى كِتَابِنَا ؟ فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ أَهْلِ السَّعَادَةِ عَمِلَ لَهَا، وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنَّا مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّقَاوَةِ عَمِلَ لَهَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " اعْمَلُوا فَكُلٌّ مُيَسَّرٌ، مَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ السَّعَادَةِ يُسِّرَ لِعَمَلِهَا، وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّقَاوَةِ يُسِّرَ لِعَمَلِهَا، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ: فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى وَاتَّقَى وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَى فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَى وَأَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَى وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَى فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَى
✧ We went out with the Messenger of God ﷺ in a funeral procession until we reached Baqi' al-Gharqad. The Messenger of God ﷺ sat down, and we sat around him. The Messenger of God ﷺ took a stick and began striking the ground with it. Then he raised his head and said, "There is no soul that breathes but its place in Paradise and its place in the Fire have been known—or written—and whether it is wretched or blessed." A man among the people said, "O Messenger of God, should we not then abandon action and rely on our book? For whoever among us is among the people of blessedness will act for it, and whoever among us is among the people of wretchedness will act for it." The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Act, for everyone is facilitated. Whoever is among the people of blessedness will be facilitated for its action, and whoever is among the people of wretchedness will be facilitated for its action. Then he recited: 'As for him who gives and fears, and believes in the best, We will facilitate for him the easy way. But as for him who is miserly and considers himself self-sufficient, and denies the best, We will facilitate for him the hard way' (Qur'an 92:5-10).

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا اسْتَفْتَحَ الصَّلَاةَ كَبَّرَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَبِذَلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَنْتَ رَبِّي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي، وَاعْتَرَفْتُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي جَمِيعًا، إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَاهْدِنِي لِأَحْسَنِ الْأَخْلَاقِ لَا يَهْدِي لِأَحْسَنِهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَاصْرِفْ عَنِّي سَيِّئَهَا لَا يَصْرِفُ سَيِّئَهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ، لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ، وَالْخَيْرُ كُلُّهُ فِي يَدَيْكَ، وَالشَّرُّ لَيْسَ إِلَيْكَ، أَنَا بِكَ وَإِلَيْكَ، تَبَارَكْتَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ "، وَإِذَا رَكَعَ قَالَ: " اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، خَشَعَ لَكَ سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي وَعِظَامِي وَمُخِّي وَعَصَبِي "، وَإِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ قَالَ: " سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ، مِلْءَ السَّمَاوَاتِ، وَمِلْءَ الْأَرْضِ، وَمِلْءَ مَا بَيْنَهُمَا، وَمِلْءَ مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ بَعْدُ "، وَإِذَا سَجَدَ قَالَ: " اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ سَجَدْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، سَجَدَ وَجْهِي لِلَّذِي خَلَقَهُ، وَصَوَّرَهُ فَأَحْسَنَ صُوَرَهُ، وَشَقَّ سَمْعَهُ وَبَصَرَهُ، تَبَارَكَ اللهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ "، وَإِذَا سَلَّمَ قَالَ: " اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ، وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ، وَأَنْتَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ began the prayer, he would say the takbir, then say: "I have turned my face to Him who created the heavens and the earth, as a hanif, and I am not of the polytheists. Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for God, Lord of the worlds. No partner has He. With this I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit. O God, You are the King, there is no god but You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and confessed my sin, so forgive me all my sins. None forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of character; none guides to its best but You. Turn away from me its evil; none turns away its evil but You. Here I am at Your service, all good is in Your hands, and evil is not attributed to You. I am through You and to You. Blessed and exalted are You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance." When he bowed, he said: "O God, to You I have bowed, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My hearing, my sight, my bones, my marrow, and my nerves humble themselves to You." When he raised his head, he said: "God hears the one who praises Him. O God, our Lord, to You is praise, filling the heavens, filling the earth, filling what is between them, and filling whatever You will after that." When he prostrated, he said: "O God, to You I have prostrated, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My face has prostrated to the One who created it, shaped it, and perfected its form, and split its hearing and sight. Blessed is God, the best of creators." When he said the taslim, he said: "O God, forgive me what I have sent ahead and what I have delayed, what I have made public and what I have concealed, and what You know better than I. You are the One who brings forward and the One who delays; there is no god but You."

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ tied a turban on me on the day of Ghadir Khumm, letting its end hang down behind me. Then he said: "Indeed, God, Mighty and Majestic, reinforced me on the day of Badr and Hunayn with angels wearing turbans like this. Indeed, the turban is a barrier between disbelief and faith." He saw a man shooting with a Persian bow and said, "Shoot with it." Then he looked at an Arab bow and said, "You should use this and its likes, and the spears of qana, for with these God will enable you in the lands and support you in victory."

✧ We were sitting with Ali ؓ waiting when a funeral procession passed by us, and we stood up for it. He said: "What is this?" We said: "This is what you have brought to us, O Companions of Muhammad. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari narrated to us that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'When the funeral procession of a Muslim man, or a Jew, or a Christian passes by you, stand up for it. For we do not stand up for it, but we stand up for the angels who are with it.'" Ali said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ did that only once. They were People of the Book, and he used to imitate them in some things, but when he was forbidden, he stopped."

✧ "Some people of my community will recite the Qur'an but it will not go beyond their collarbones. They will pass out of Islam as the arrow passes out of the game. Their mark is a man with a deformed hand." Abu Maryam said: My brother told me, and he had gone out with his master to the Haruriyya at al-Nahrawan. He said: He did not come to them until they had killed his messenger. When he saw that, he rose against them and fought them. When he finished with them, he said: Look for the deformed one. The messengers kept going back and forth but could not find him. Then a man came later and gave him the good news. He said: We found him in a low spot of ground under two men. So he cut off his hands and the small breast, took it, and set it up. He said: By God, I have not lied and I have not been lied to. He said this many times.

✧ I will not tell you except what Ibn Abi Talib ؓ told me: Among them is one with a defective hand, or a deformed hand, or a withered hand. Were it not that you would become heedless, I would tell you what God promised to those who kill them on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ. I said to 'Ali ؓ: Did you hear it from Muhammad ﷺ? He said: Yes, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, saying it three times.

كَانَ عَلِيٌّ يَخْرُجُ إِلَى السُّوقِ فَيَقُولُ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: قَوْلُكَ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، فَقَالَ: صَدَقَ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، إِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَوَاللهِ لَأَنْ أَخِرَّ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَتَخْطَفُنِي الطَّيْرُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَقُولَ: سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مَا لَمْ أَسْمَعْ، وَإِذَا حَدَّثْتُكُمْ عَنْ نَفْسِي فَإِنَّ الْحَرْبَ خَدْعَةٌ، سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: يَجِيءُ فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ قَوْمٌ أَحْدَاثُ الْأَسْنَانِ، سُفَهَاءُ الْأَحْلَامِ، يَقُولُونَ مِنْ قَوْلِ خَيْرِ الْبَرِيَّةِ، يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ لَا يُجَاوِزُ حَنَاجِرَهُمْ، يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ، فَمَنْ أَدْرَكَهُمْ فَلْيَقْتُلْهُمْ أَوْ لِيُقَاتِلْهُمْ، فَإِنَّ لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ أَجْرًا فِي قَتْلِهِمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
✧ 'Ali used to go out to the market and say: God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. It was said to him: Your saying: God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. He said: God and His Messenger have spoken the truth. When I narrate to you from the Messenger of God ﷺ, by God, that I fall from the sky and the birds snatch me away is dearer to me than that I say: I heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ what I did not hear. And when I narrate to you from myself, then indeed war is deception. I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: In the last days there will come a people young in age, foolish in intellect, who speak with the words of the best of creation. They recite the Qur'an but it does not go beyond their throats. They pass out of the religion as the arrow passes out of the game. Whoever meets them, let him kill them or fight them, for whoever kills them will have a reward on the Day of Resurrection.

" الْتَمِسُوا الْمُخْدَجَ، فَالْتَمَسُوهُ، فَلَمْ يَجِدُوهُ، فَأَتَوْهُ، فَقَالَ: ارْجِعُوا فَالْتَمِسُوهُ، فَوَاللهِ مَا كَذَبْتُ وَلَا كُذِبْتُ، حَتَّى قَالَ ذَلِكَ لِي مِرَارًا، فَرَجَعُوا فَقَالُوا: قَدْ وَجَدْنَاهُ تَحْتَ الْقَتْلَى فِي الطِّينِ، فَكَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ حَبَشِيًّا، لَهُ ثَدْيٌ كَثَدْيِ الْمَرْأَةِ، عَلَيْهِ شُعَيْرَاتٌ كَشُعَيْرَاتِ الَّتِي عَلَى ذَنَبِ الْيَرْبُوعِ، فَسُرَّ بِذَلِكَ عَلِيٌّ ؓ
✧ "Look for the deformed one." So they searched for him but did not find him. They came to him and he said: Go back and look for him, for by God, I have not lied and I have not been lied to, until he said that to me many times. They went back and said: We found him under the slain in the mud. It is as if I were looking at him, an Abyssinian, with a breast like a woman's breast, with small hairs like the small hairs on the tail of a jerboa. 'Ali ؓ was delighted by that.

✧ "The Messenger of God ﷺ was neither short nor tall, with a large head and beard, coarse palms and feet, large joints, his face tinged with redness, with a long line of hair from the chest to the navel. When he walked, he leaned forward as if descending a slope. I have not seen before him or after him anyone like him."

حَضَرْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ ؓ، وَأُتِيَ بِالْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ قَدْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ، وَشَهِدَ عَلَيْهِ حُمْرَانُ بْنُ أَبَانَ، وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ لِعَلِيٍّ: أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، فَأَمَرَ عَلِيٌّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ ذِي الْجَنَاحَيْنِ أَنْ يَجْلِدَهُ، فَأَخَذَ فِي جَلْدِهِ، وَعَلِيٌّ يَعُدُّ، حَتَّى جَلَدَ أَرْبَعِينَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ: " أَمْسِكْ ; جَلَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعِينَ، وَجَلَدَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ أَرْبَعِينَ، وَجَلَدَ عُمَرُ ؓ ثَمَانِينَ، وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ، وَهَذَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ
✧ I was present with 'Uthman b. 'Affan ؓ when al-Walid b. 'Uqbah was brought, having drunk wine. Humran b. Aban and another man testified against him. 'Uthman said to 'Ali: Carry out the punishment on him. 'Ali ordered 'Abd Allah b. Ja'far, the one with the two wings, to flog him. He began flogging him while 'Ali counted, until he had flogged him forty lashes. Then he said to him: "Stop; the Messenger of God ﷺ flogged forty, Abu Bakr ؓ flogged forty, and 'Umar ؓ flogged eighty, and all is sunnah, and this is dearer to me."

✧ 'Ali ؓ came out to us when the caller called the iqamah, and said: Your Prophet ﷺ commanded the witr and set for it this hour. Give the adhan, O Ibn al-Nabbah, or give the iqamah, O Ibn al-Nabbah.

✧ Whoever leaves a hair unwashed by water from janaba, Allah will do such-and-such to it with the Fire. That is why I treated my head—or he said: my hair—with hostility, and he used to crop his hair.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا، قَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، كَانَتْ لِي مِائَةُ أُوقِيَّةٍ، تَصَدَّقْتُ مِنْهَا بِعَشْرِ أَوَاقٍ، وَقَالَ آخَرُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، كَانَتْ لِي مِائَةُ دِينَارٍ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ مِنْهَا بِعَشَرَةِ دَنَانِيرَ، وَقَالَ آخَرُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، كَانَتْ لِي عَشَرَةُ دَنَانِيرَ فَتَصَدَّقْتُ مِنْهَا بِدِينَارٍ، فَقَالَ: كُلُّكُمْ قَدْ أَحْسَنَ، وَأَنْتُمْ فِي الْأَجْرِ سَوَاءٌ، تَصَدَّقَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ مِنْكُمْ بِعُشْرِ مَالِهِ
✧ A man said: O Messenger of Allah, I had one hundred uqiyyahs and gave ten uqiyyahs of them as charity. Another said: O Messenger of Allah, I had one hundred dinars and gave ten dinars of them as charity. Another said: O Messenger of Allah, I had ten dinars and gave one dinar of them as charity. He said: All of you have done well, and you are equal in reward; each of you gave a tenth of his wealth as charity.

✧ When he passed by the Black Stone and saw crowding around it, he faced it and said takbir, then said: O Allah, in confirmation of Your Book and the Sunnah of Your Prophet ﷺ.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that debt comes before the bequest, while you recite: after any bequest or debt. Full brothers from the same mother inherit, but not half-brothers from different mothers.

✧ I witnessed 'Ali ؓ being asked about Hudhayfah. He said: He asked about the names of the hypocrites and was told them. He was asked about himself, and he said: I knew myself. When I asked I was answered, and when I was silent I was approached.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me a striped silk garment—meaning of silk—and I wore it and went out in it. I saw anger in his face, and he said: I did not send it to you to wear. He said: So I tore it between our women—or my women.

" يَا عَلِيُّ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ لَكَ مَا أُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِي، وَأَكْرَهُ لَكَ مَا أَكْرَهُ لِنَفْسِي، لَا تَقْرَأْ وَأَنْتَ رَاكِعٌ، وَلَا وَأَنْتَ سَاجِدٌ، وَلَا تُصَلِّ وَأَنْتَ عَاقِصٌ شَعَرَكَ، مَقِيلَ الشَّيْطَانِ، وَلَا تَعْبَثْ بِالْحَصَى وَأَنْتَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ، وَلَا تَتَخَتَّمْ بِالذَّهَبِ، وَلَا تَلْبَسِ الْقَسِّيَّ وَلَا تَرْكَبِ الْمَيَاثِرَ
✧ O 'Ali, I love for you what I love for myself and hate for you what I hate for myself. Do not recite while bowing or while prostrating, do not pray with your hair twisted, the seat of the devil, do not play with pebbles while in prayer, do not wear a gold ring, do not wear qassi, and do not ride on mayathir.

✧ There is no one on whom I carried out a prescribed punishment who then died and I had to pay blood money, except the punishment for wine, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not institute it—or he said: except the punishment for wine, for we have instituted it.

مَا عِنْدَنَا شَيْءٌ إِلَّا كِتَابَ اللهِ، وَإِلَّا هَذِهِ الصَّحِيفَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ: إِنَّ الْمَدِينَةَ حَرَمٌ مَا بَيْنَ عَيْرٍ إِلَى ثَوْرٍ، مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِيهَا حَدَثًا، أَوْ آوَى مُحْدِثًا فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ، لَا يَقْبَلُ اللهُ مِنْهُ صَرْفًا وَلَا عَدْلًا، وَمَنْ وَالَى قَوْمًا بِغَيْرِ إِذْنِ مَوَالِيهِ فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ، لَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهُ صَرْفٌ وَلَا عَدْلٌ
✧ We have nothing except the Book of Allah and this sheet from the Prophet ﷺ: Madinah is a sanctuary between 'Ayr and Thawr. Whoever introduces an innovation in it or shelters an innovator, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. Allah will not accept from him any compensation or ransom. Whoever gives allegiance to a people without the permission of their masters, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. No compensation or ransom will be accepted from him.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me two slave boys who were brothers, and I sold one of them. The Prophet ﷺ said: What happened to the two slaves? I said: I sold one of them. He said: Return him.

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ made peace with Quraysh, he wrote: “This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of God, has agreed upon.” They said: “If we knew you were the Messenger of God, we would not have fought you.” So he erased it and wrote: “Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah.”

أَنَّهُ أُتِيَ فِي ثَلَاثَةٍ اشْتَرَكُوا فِي طُهْرِ امْرَأَةٍ، فَأَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَقَالَ: " أَنْتُمْ شُرَكَاءُ مُتَشَاكِسُونَ، فَجَعَلَ الْوَلَدَ لِلَّذِي أَقْرَعَ، وَجَعَلَ لَهُمَا ثُلُثَيِ الدِّيَةِ، فَأَخْبَرَ بِذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَضَحِكَ حَتَّى بَدَتْ نَوَاجِذُهُ
✧ Three men came to him who had shared in the purity of a woman, and he cast lots among them and said: “You are quarrelsome partners.” He assigned the child to the one who won the lot and made the other two liable for two-thirds of the blood-money. He told the Prophet ﷺ about that, and he laughed until his molars showed.

سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا ؓ يَخْطُبُ، فَضَحِكَ ضَحِكًا مَا رَأَيْتُهُ ضَحِكَهُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ، فَقَالَ: لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي أُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَاطَّلَعَ أَبِي عَلَيْنَا وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَيْ بُنَيَّ مَا كُنْتُمَا تَصْنَعَانِ ؟ قُلْتُ: كُنَّا نُصَلِّي، فَقَالَ أَبُو طَالِبٍ: وَاللهِ وَاللهِ لَا تَعْلُونِي اسْتِي أَبَدًا "، فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَضْحَكُ مِنْ قَوْلِ أَبِيهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي صَلَّيْتُ قَبْلَ النَّاسِ حِجَجًا
✧ I heard 'Ali ؓ giving a sermon, and he laughed a laugh I never saw him laugh before, while he was on the pulpit. He said: “I remember praying with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and my father looked in on us while I was praying with the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: ‘My son, what are you two doing?’ I said: ‘We were praying.’ Abu Talib said: ‘By God, by God, you will never surpass me in my backside.’" He said: “I saw him laugh at his father’s words.” Then he said: “I remember I prayed before the people for years.”

زَارَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَبَاتَ عِنْدَنَا، وَالْحَسَنُ وَالْحُسَيْنُ نَائِمَانِ، فَاسْتَسْقَى الْحَسَنُ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى قِرْبَةٍ لَنَا، فَجَعَلَ يَعْصِرُهَا فِي الْقَدَحِ، ثُمَّ يَسْقِيهِ، فَتَنَاوَلَهُ الْحُسَيْنُ لِيَشْرَبَ، فَمَنَعَهُ، وَبَدَأَ بِالْحَسَنِ، فَقَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، كَأَنَّهُ أَحَبُّهُمَا إِلَيْكَ، فَقَالَ: " لَا، وَلَكِنَّهُ اسْتَسْقَى أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ "، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " إِنِّي وَإِيَّاكِ وَهَذَيْنِ - وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: وَهَذَا الرَّاقِدُ - يَعْنِي عَلِيًّا - يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِي مَكَانٍ وَاحِدٍ
✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ visited us and spent the night with us while al-Hasan and al-Husayn were asleep. Al-Hasan asked for water, so the Messenger of God ﷺ got up to a water-skin of ours and began squeezing it into a cup, then giving him to drink. Al-Husayn reached for it to drink, but he prevented him and began with al-Hasan. Fatimah said: “O Messenger of God, it is as if he is more beloved to you than the other.” He said: “No, but he asked first.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I, you, and these two—and I think he said: and this one lying down, meaning 'Ali—will be in one place on the Day of Resurrection.”
