حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ، سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ سَلِمَةَ، يَقُولُ:

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ؓ، أَنَا وَرَجُلَانِ ; رَجُلٌ مِنَّا وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ - أَحْسَبُ - فَبَعَثَهُمَا وَجْهًا، وَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ فَعَالِجَا عَنْ دِينِكُمَا، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَخْرَجَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَأَخَذَ حَفْنَةً مِنْ مَاءٍ فَمَسَحَ بِهَا، ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ، فَرَآنَا أَنْكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَدْخُلُ الْخَلَاءَ فَيَقْضِي الْحَاجَةَ، ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ، فَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ، وَيَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَلَا يَحْجُبُهُ - وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ: وَلَا يَحْجِزُهُ - عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةَ

Translation

✧ I entered upon 'Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ with two men—one from us and one from Banu Asad, I think. He sent the two of them on a mission and said, 'You are two sturdy fellows, so act stoutly in your religion.' Then he went to the privy, came out, took a handful of water and wiped with it, and began reciting the Qur'an. He saw that we found that strange, so he said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would enter the privy, relieve himself, then come out and eat meat with us and recite the Qur'an, and nothing would prevent him—perhaps he said, "and nothing would hold him back"—from the Qur'an except major ritual impurity (janabah).'
