كُنَّا مَعَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ ؓ فِي الدَّارِ وَهُوَ مَحْصُورٌ، وَكُنَّا نَدْخُلُ مَدْخَلًا نَسْمَعُ مِنْهُ كَلَامَ مَنْ فِي الْبَلَاطِ، فَدَخَلَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ مُتَغَيِّرَ اللَّوْنِ، فَقِيلَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا شَأْنُكَ ؟ قَالَ: إِنَّهُمْ لَيَتَوَاعَدُونَنِي بِالْقَتْلِ آنِفًا، وَلَمْ أَسْتَيْقِنْ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ، حَتَّى كَانَ الْيَوْمُ، فَقُلْنَا: يَكْفِيكَهُمُ اللهُ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، قَالَ: وَبِمَ يَقْتُلُونَنِي ؟ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: لَا يَحِلُّ دَمُ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ إِلَّا بِإِحْدَى ثَلَاثٍ: رَجُلٌ كَفَرَ بَعْدَ إِسْلَامِهِ، أَوْ زَنَى بَعْدَ إِحْصَانِهِ، أَوْ قَتَلَ نَفْسًا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ "، فَوَاللهِ مَا زَنَيْتُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَلَا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ قَطُّ، وَلَا أَحْبَبْتُ بِدِينِي بَدَلًا مُنْذُ هَدَانِي اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، وَمَا قَتَلْتُ نَفْسًا، فَعَلَامَ يُرِيدُ هَؤُلَاءِ قَتْلِي.
✧ We were with 'Uthman b. 'Affan ؓ in the house while he was besieged. We would enter through an entrance from which we could hear the words of those in the courtyard. 'Uthman ؓ entered, then came out with his color changed. It was said: 'O Commander of the Believers, what is the matter with you?' He said: 'They are threatening to kill me just now, and I was not certain of that from them until today.' We said: 'May Allah suffice you against them, O Commander of the Believers.' He said: 'And for what would they kill me? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The blood of a Muslim man is not lawful except for one of three reasons: a man who disbelieves after his Islam, or commits adultery after being married, or kills a person without justification." By Allah, I have never committed adultery in the Jahiliyyah or in Islam, I have never desired a substitute for my religion since Allah, Mighty and Majestic, guided me, and I have never killed a person. So why do these people want to kill me?'

أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ ؓ، أُتِيَ بِالْوَضُوءِ لِصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: إِنِّي قَدْ رَأَيْتُ أَنْ أُحَدِّثَكُمْ بِحَدِيثٍ مَا ظَنِّي أُحَدِّثُكُمُوهُ، فَقَالَ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّمَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ نَتَّبِعُهُ أَوْ شَرٌّ نَتَّقِيهِ، فَقَالَ: أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ بِالْوَضُوءِ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ وُضُوءَهُ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى فَأَتَمَّ رُكُوعَهَا وَسُجُودَهَا، كُفِّرَ عَنْهُ مَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الصَّلَاةِ الْأُخْرَى مَا لَمْ يَرْكَبْ مَقْتَلَةً "، يَعْنِي: مَا لَمْ يَرْكَبْ كَبِيرَةً
✧ Uthman b. 'Affan ؓ was brought water for wudu for the 'Asr prayer while he was at al-Maqa'id. Uthman said: I have decided to tell you a hadith that I did not think I would tell you. Al-Hakam b. Abi al-'As said: O Commander of the Faithful, it is only good that we should follow, or evil that we should avoid. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought water for wudu while he was at al-Maqa'id. He said: Whoever performs wudu and perfects his wudu, then prays and completes its bowing and prostration, will have expiated for him what is between it and the next prayer as long as he does not commit a mortal sin, meaning as long as he does not commit a major sin.

أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْوَضُوءِ وَهُوَ بِالْمَقَاعِدِ لِصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الْمُسْلِمَ إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ الْوُضُوءَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الصَّلَوَاتِ - قَالَ حَمَّادٌ: أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: فِي جَمَاعَةٍ - فَأَتَمَّ رُكُوعَهَا وَسُجُودَهَا غَفَرَ اللهُ مَا بَيْنَهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَرْكَبْ مَقْتَلَةً
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought water for wudu while he was at al-Maqa'id for the 'Asr prayer. He said: When a Muslim performs wudu and perfects his wudu, then performs the prayers—Hammad said: I think he said: in congregation—and completes their bowing and prostration, Allah forgives him what is between them as long as he does not commit a mortal sin.

✧ A man was easygoing as a judge and as one seeking repayment, and as a seller and as a buyer, and he entered Paradise.

✧ There is no servant who says every morning or every evening: In the name of Allah with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing—but that nothing will harm him.

وَاللهِ مَا يَمْنَعُنِي أَنْ أُحَدِّثَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِّي لَا أَكُونُ أَوْعَاهُمْ لِحَدِيثِهِ، وَلَكِنْ أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: مَنْ قَالَ عَلَيَّ مَا لَمْ أَقُلْ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ
✧ By Allah, what prevents me from relating from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is not that I am not the most retentive of them for his hadith, but I testify that I heard him say: Whoever says about me what I did not say, let him take his seat in the Fire.

سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ ؓ، يَقُولُ لِسَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، وَعَلِيٍّ، وَالزُّبَيْرِ، وَطَلْحَةَ ؓ: أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللهِ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ: مَنْ جَهَّزَ جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ غَفَرَ اللهُ لَهُ، فَجَهَّزْتُهُمْ حَتَّى مَا يَفْقِدُونَ خِطَامًا وَلَا عِقَالًا ؟ قَالُوا: اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ
✧ I heard Uthman ؓ say to Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas, Ali, al-Zubayr, and Talha ؓ: I adjure you by Allah, do you not know that the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever equips the army of hardship, Allah will forgive him, and I equipped them until they were not missing a halter or a hobble? They said: O Allah, yes.

" كُلُّ شَيْءٍ سِوَى جِلْفِ هَذَا الطَّعَامِ، وَالْمَاءِ الْعَذْبِ، وَبَيْتٍ يُظِلُّهُ - فَضْلٌ، لَيْسَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ فِيهِ فَضْلٌ
✧ Everything besides the husk of this food, fresh water, and a house that shelters him is surplus, and the son of Adam has no merit in it.

زَوَّجَنِي أَهْلِي جَارِيَةً لَهُمْ رُومِيَّةً، فَوَلَدَتْ لِي غُلَامًا أَسْوَدَ مِثْلِي، فَسَمَّيْتُهُ عَبْدَ اللهِ، ثُمَّ وَقَعْتُ عَلَيْهَا فَوَلَدَتْ لِي غُلَامًا آخَرَ أَسْوَدَ مِثْلِي فَسَمَّيْتُهُ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ، ثُمَّ طَبِنَ لَهَا غُلَامٌ لَنَا رُومِيٌّ يُقَالُ لَهُ: يُحَنَّسُ، فَوَطِئَهَا، فَحَمَلَتْ، فَوَلَدَتْ غُلَامًا كَأَنَّهُ وَزَغٌ مِنَ الْوِزْغَانِ، فَقُلْتُ: مَا هَذَا ؟ فَقَالَتْ: لَا وَاللهِ مَا هَذَا مِنْكَ، هَذَا مِنْ يُحَنَّسَ، فَقَالَ: صَدَقْتِ، فَاخْتَصَمَا إِلَى عُثْمَانَ فَاعْتَرَفَا جَمِيعًا، فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ: أَتَرْضَيَانِ أَنْ أَقْضِيَ بَيْنَكُمَا بِقَضَاءِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَضَى أَنَّ الْوَلَدَ لِلْفِرَاشِ، وَلِلْعَاهِرِ الْحَجَرُ، هُوَ ابْنُكَ تَرِثُهُ وَيَرِثُكَ، فَقُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ اللهِ، قَالَ: هُوَ ذَاكَ، فَكُنْتُ أُنِيمُهُ بَيْنَهُمَا، هَذَانِ أَسْوَدَانِ وَهَذَا أَبْيَضُ
✧ My family married me to a Byzantine slave girl of theirs, and she bore me a black boy like me, so I named him 'Abd Allah. Then I had intercourse with her and she bore me another black boy like me, so I named him 'Ubayd Allah. Then a Byzantine slave of ours called Yuhannis became attached to her and had intercourse with her, and she became pregnant and bore a boy like a gecko among geckos. I said, "What is this?" She said, "No, by Allah, this is not from you; this is from Yuhannis." He said, "You have spoken the truth." They brought their dispute to 'Uthman and both confessed. 'Uthman said, "Would you both be pleased that I judge between you with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ judged that the child belongs to the bed, and the fornicator gets the stone. He is your son; you inherit from him and he inherits from you." I said, "Glory be to Allah!" He said, "That is it." So I used to put him to sleep between the two of them: these two are black and this one is white.

قَالَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ ؓ فِي مَسْجِدِ الْخَيْفِ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كُنْتُ أَكْتُمُكُمُوهُ ضَنًّا بِكُمْ، قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ أُبْدِيَهُ نَصِيحَةً لَكُمْ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: يَوْمُ الْمُجَاهِدِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ كَأَلْفِ يَوْمٍ فِيمَا سِوَاهُ، فَلْيَنْظُرْ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنْكُمْ لِنَفْسِهِ
✧ 'Uthman b. 'Affan ؓ said in the mosque of al-Khayf: "O people, a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ I used to conceal from you out of concern for you. It has now appeared to me that I should disclose it as sincere advice to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'A day of the mujahid in the path of Allah is like a thousand days besides it.' So let every man among you look to himself."
