12. Marriage
«مَنْ قَدَرَ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْكِحَ فَلَمْ يَنْكِحْ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا»
✧ “Whoever is able to marry but does not marry is not of us.”
Sunan ad-Darimi 2211Sahih
It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: "The Messenger of Allah said to us: 'O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity, and whoever cannot then he should fast, for it will be a restraint (wija') for him.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3209)
Sunan ad-Darimi 2212Sahih
✧ Do you have a young virgin girl who reminds you of Abu Abdurrahman? So he said, "If you say that, then I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'O youth, whoever among you is able to marry, let him do so, for it is more effective in guarding the gaze and preserving chastity. And whoever is not able, then let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.'"
Sunan ad-Darimi 2213Sahih
«لَقَدْ رَدَّ ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ وَلَوْ أَجَازَ لَهُ التَّبَتُّلَ لَاخْتَصَيْنَا»

✧ "When it came to the matter of Uthman ibn Madhun, who was known for his abstention from women, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a messenger to him and said, 'O Uthman, I have not been commanded to adopt a monastic lifestyle. Have you turned away from my Sunnah?' Uthman replied, 'No, O Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Verily, it is from my Sunnah to pray, sleep, fast, give charity, get married, and divorce. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me, O Uthman. Indeed, your family has rights over you, and you have rights over yourself.' Saad said, 'By Allah, all the men among the Muslims were united in their acknowledgement that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ showed special preference to Uthman regarding his choice to abstain from women.'"

If you take off your clothes, he will not see anything. And do not let us miss your company." So she went to the house of Ibn Umm Maktum. ✧ I was asked about the two who engage in li'an during the governorship of Mus'ab b. al-Zubayr, whether they are to be separated. I did not know what to say. So I stood up and went to the house of 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar. I said to the servant, "Ask permission for me to enter." He said, "He is taking a midday nap; you will not be able to enter upon him." Ibn 'Umar heard my voice and said, "Ibn Jubayr?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Enter. Nothing brought you at this hour except a need." So I entered upon him and found him using the saddle pad of his mount as a mat and a cushion as a pillow—or he said a small pillow—'Abd Allah was uncertain—stuffed with palm fiber. I said, "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, the two who engage in li'an, are they to be separated?" He said, "Glory be to Allah, yes. The first person to ask about that was so-and-so. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless you, what do you think if one of us sees his wife committing an indecency, how should he act? If he remains silent, he remains silent about a grave matter, and if he speaks, it is the same.'" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent and did not answer him. Then he stood up for his need. After that, he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, the matter I asked you about has befallen me.'" He said, "Then Allah Most High sent down these verses in Surat al-Nur: 'And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves, then the testimony of one of them is four testimonies by Allah that he is truthful, and the fifth that the curse of Allah be upon him if he is lying. And it will avert the punishment from her if she testifies four testimonies by Allah that he is lying, and the fifth that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he is truthful.'" Until he finished these verses. He said, "Then he summoned the man and recited them to him, reminded him of Allah, and told him that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. The man said, 'I have not lied about her.' Then he summoned the woman, admonished her, reminded her, and told her that the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter. She said, 'By the One who sent you with truth, he is lying.' Then he called the man, and he testified four testimonies by Allah that he was truthful, and the fifth that the curse of Allah be upon him if he was lying. Then the woman was brought, and she testified four testimonies by Allah that he was lying, and the fifth that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was truthful. Then he separated them."

✧ Sahlah bint Suhayl b. 'Amr, who was married to Abu Hudhayfah b. 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, enters upon us while I am in a state of undress, and we regarded him as a son, for Abu Hudhayfah had adopted him as the Prophet ﷺ adopted Zayd.' Then Allah the Exalted revealed: 'Call them by their fathers; that is more just before Allah' [al-Ahzab 5]. So at that the Prophet ﷺ commanded her to breastfeed Salim. ✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married me when I was a girl of six years. We came to Madinah and stayed among the Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj. I fell ill and my hair fell out, then it grew back thick. Umm Ruman came to me while I was on a swing with my girl companions. She called me loudly, so I went to her, not knowing what she wanted. She took my hand and brought me to the door of the house. I was panting until my breathing calmed down. Then she took some water and wiped my face and head with it. Then she brought me into the house, and there were women of the Ansar in the room. They said, "Upon goodness and blessing, and upon the best of fortune." She handed me over to them, and they prepared me. Then nothing startled me except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the forenoon. They handed me over to him, and I was on that day a girl of nine years.
