✧ I heard `Umar b. al-Khattab giving a sermon. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "Indeed, do not go to excess in the dowers of women. For if it were a source of honor in this world or piety with Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have been the most entitled to it among you. He did not give as dower to any of his wives, nor was any of his daughters given a dower, more than twelve uqiyah. Indeed, one of you goes to excess in the dower of his wife until she remains in his heart an enmity, until he says, 'I burdened myself for you with the strap of the water-skin, or the sweat of the water-skin.'"
