11. Visions

  1. Sunan ad-Darimi 2182Sahih

✧ I said: O Prophet of Allah, the saying of Allah: For them are good tidings in the worldly life. He said: You have asked me about something no one before you or anyone from my nation has asked me. He said: It is the righteous vision that a Muslim sees or is seen for him.

  2. Sunan ad-Darimi 2183Sahih

✧ The vision of the believer is one part of forty-six parts of prophethood.

  3. Sunan ad-Darimi 2184Sahih

✧ Prophethood has departed and the glad tidings remain.

  4. Sunan ad-Darimi 2185Sahih

“Whoever sees me in a dream has (really) seen me, for Satan cannot appear in my form.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3901)

  5. Sunan ad-Darimi 2186Sahih

He who saw me in dream in fact saw the truth (what is true). (Using translation from Muslim 2267a)

  6. Sunan ad-Darimi 2187Sahih

✧ The righteous vision is from Allah and the dream is from Satan. So when one of you dreams something he fears, let him spit to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Satan, for it will not harm him.

  7. Sunan ad-Darimi 2188Sahih

✧ I used to see dreams that made me sick. I mentioned that to Abu Qatadah. He said: I too used to see dreams that made me sick until I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The good dream is from Allah, so if one of you sees what he loves, let him praise Allah and not tell it except to one he loves. And if he sees what he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from its evil and not tell it to anyone, for then it will not harm him."

  8. Sunan ad-Darimi 2189Sahih

✧ "The dream is three: a good dream is glad tidings from Allah, a dream is grief from Satan, and a dream is from what a person tells himself. So if one of you sees what he dislikes, let him not speak of it, and let him stand and pray."

  9. Sunan ad-Darimi 2190Sahih

✧ "When time draws near, the dream of the believer will hardly be false, and the most truthful of them in dreams are the most truthful of them in speech."

  10. Sunan ad-Darimi 2191Weak

✧ From Ali, who attributed the hadith to the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever lies about his dream will be charged with tying two grains of barley on the Day of Resurrection."

  11. Sunan ad-Darimi 2192Weak

✧ "The most truthful dreams are in the early morning hours."

  12. Sunan ad-Darimi 2193Sahih

✧ About the Prophet ﷺ, he used to say, "Do not interpret dreams except by a knowledgeable person or an advisor."

  13. Sunan ad-Darimi 2194Sahih

✧ "The dream is on the foot of a bird as long as it is not interpreted; when it is interpreted, it comes to pass."

  14. Sunan ad-Darimi 2195Sahih

    «رَأَيْتُ رَبِّي فِي أَحْسَنِ صُورَةٍ» قَالَ فِيمَ يَخْتَصِمُ الْمَلَأُ الْأَعْلَى؟ فَقُلْتُ «أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ يَا رَبِّ» قَالَ فَوَضَعَ كَفَّهُ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيَّ فَوَجَدْتُ بَرْدَهَا بَيْنَ ثَدْيَيَّ فَعَلِمْتُ مَا فِي السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَتَلَا {وَكَذَلِكَ نُرِي إِبْرَاهِيمَ مَلَكُوتَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَلِيَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُوقِنِينَ}

✧ "I saw my Lord in the most beautiful form." He said: About what does the Most High Assembly dispute? I said: "You know best, O Lord." He said: Then He placed His palm between my shoulders, and I found its coolness between my breasts, and I learned what is in the heavens and the earth, and He recited: {And thus We showed Abraham the dominion of the heavens and the earth, so that he would be of those who are certain}.

  15. Sunan ad-Darimi 2196Weak

✧ "Whoever sees his Lord in a dream will enter Paradise."

  16. Sunan ad-Darimi 2197Weak

✧ "While I was sleeping, I saw people displayed before me wearing shirts, some of which reached the chest and some of which reached less than that. And Umar ibn al-Khattab was displayed before me wearing a shirt that he was dragging." Then those around him said: "How did you interpret that, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "The religion."

  17. Sunan ad-Darimi 2198Hasan

✧ I was during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, and I had no place to sleep except in the mosque of the Prophet ﷺ. And the Prophet ﷺ, when morning came, they would come to him and relate their dreams. I said: Why do I not see anything? Then I saw as if people were being gathered and thrown on their feet into a well. I was taken, and when I approached the well, a man said: Take him to the right. When I woke up, my dream concerned me and I feared it. I asked Hafsah about it, and she said: What a good thing you saw. I said to her: Ask the Prophet ﷺ. She asked him, and he said: "What a good man Abdullah is, if only he would pray at night."

  18. Sunan ad-Darimi 2199Accepted

✧ Musa b. Khalid narrated to us, from Ibrahim b. Muhammad al-Fazari, from Ubayd Allah, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar with this hadith. Ibn Umar said: When I slept, I would not get up until morning. Nafi said: Ibn Umar used to pray at night.

  19. Sunan ad-Darimi 2200Sahih

✧ “Milk is the fitrah, the ship is salvation, the camel is sorrow, greenery is Paradise, and the woman is good.”

  21. Sunan ad-Darimi 2202Sahih

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say to his companions: “Whoever among you sees a dream, let him relate it to me and I will interpret it for him.” He said: A man came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I saw a canopy between the sky and the earth dripping honey and butter, and I saw a rope extending from the sky to the earth, and I saw people taking from it, some taking much and some taking little, and I saw a rope extending from the sky to the earth. You took hold of it and ascended, and Allah raised you. Then the one after you took hold of it and ascended, and Allah raised him. Then the one after him took hold of it and ascended, and Allah raised him. Then the one after him took hold of it, and it was cut off for him, then it was joined and connected. Abu Bakr said: O Messenger of Allah, permit me to interpret it. He said: “Interpret it.” He was the most skilled of people in interpreting dreams after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: As for the canopy, it is Islam. As for the honey and butter, it is the Qur’an: the sweetness of honey and the softness of butter. As for those taking from it, some much and some little, they are the bearers of the Qur’an. As for the rope extending from the sky to the earth, it is the truth that you are upon. You take hold of it and Allah raises you by it. Then a man after you takes hold of it and rises by it. Then another man takes hold of it and rises by it. Then another man takes hold of it and it is cut off for him, then it is joined for him and he rises by it. So tell me, O Messenger of Allah, may my father be your ransom, did I get it right or wrong? He said: “You got some right and some wrong.” He said: What did I get right and what did I get wrong? He refused to tell him.

  22. Sunan ad-Darimi 2203Sahih

✧ I saw in a dream as if a sun or a moon – Abu Ja‘far was uncertain – was being raised from the earth to the sky by strong ropes. He mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: “That is the death of your nephew.”

✧ “In this dream of mine I saw that I shook a sword and its blade broke. That was what befell the believers on the day of Uhud. Then I shook it again and it returned to the best of what it had been. That was what Allah brought of the conquest and the gathering of the believers. I also saw in it cows, and by Allah, it is good. That was the group of believers on the day of Uhud. And the good is what Allah brought of good and the reward of truthfulness that He gave us after the day of Badr.”

  24. Sunan ad-Darimi 2205Sahih

✧ “I saw as if I were in a strong coat of mail, and I saw cows being slaughtered. I interpreted that the coat of mail is Madinah and that the cows are a group – and by Allah, good. If we stay in Madinah, then if they enter upon us, we will fight them.” They said: By Allah, it was not entered upon us in the time of ignorance, so will it be entered upon us in Islam? He said: “Then it is your affair.” The Ansar said to one another: We have opposed the Prophet’s ﷺ opinion. So they came and said: O Messenger of Allah, the affair is yours. He said: “Now? When a prophet has put on his armor, he should not take it off until he fights.”

  25. Sunan ad-Darimi 2206Sahih

✧ “I dislike the iron collar and I love the shackle. The shackle is steadfastness in religion.”

  26. Sunan ad-Darimi 2207Sahih

✧ “I saw in a dream a black woman with disheveled hair and a foul smell being taken out of Madinah and settled in Mahya‘ah. I interpreted it as the plague of Madinah being transferred by Allah to Mahya‘ah.”

  27. Sunan ad-Darimi 2208Weak

✧ From the Prophet ﷺ that he said one day: “I saw in a dream that a man came to me with a lump of dates and I ate it and found in it a date pit that hurt me when I chewed it. Then he gave me another lump.” Abu Bakr said: Your eye slept, O Messenger of Allah. This expedition that you sent out – they obtained booty twice. Both times they found a man invoking your protection. I said to Mujalid: “What does ‘invoking your protection’ mean?” He said: He says: “There is no god but Allah.”

✧ “Good: your husband will return to you, if Allah Almighty wills, as a righteous man, and you will give birth to a dutiful boy.” She used to see it twice or three times, and every time she would come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he would say that to her, and her husband would return and she would give birth to a boy. Then she came one day as she used to come to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was absent, and she had seen that dream. I said to her: What are you asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about, O servant of Allah? She said: A dream that I used to see, and I would come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him about it, and he would say good, and it would happen as he said. I said: Then tell me what it is. She said: Until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ comes and I present it to him as I used to present it. By Allah, I did not leave her until she told me. I said: By Allah, if your dream is true, your husband will die and you will give birth to a wicked boy. She sat down weeping and said: What is wrong with me when I presented my dream to you? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered while she was weeping. He said to her: What is wrong with her, O A’ishah? I told him the matter and what I had interpreted for her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Stop, O A’ishah. “When you interpret a dream for a Muslim, interpret it for good, for the dream will be according to how its interpreter interprets it.” So by Allah, her husband died, and I do not think she gave birth except to a wicked boy.
