«الْحَلَالُ بَيِّنٌ وَالْحَرَامُ بَيِّنٌ وَبَيْنَهُمَا مُتَشَابِهَاتٌ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ فَمَنِ اتَّقَى الشُّبُهَاتِ اسْتَبْرَأَ لِعِرْضِهِ وَدِينِهِ وَمَنْ وَقَعَ فِي الشُّبُهَاتِ وَقَعَ فِي الْحَرَامِ كَالرَّاعِي يَرْعَى حَوْلَ الْحِمَى فَيُوشِكُ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَهُ وَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ مَلِكٍ حِمًى أَلَا وَإِنَّ حِمَى اللَّهِ مَحَارِمُهُ أَلَا وَإِنَّ فِي الْجَسَدِ مُضْغَةً إِذَا صَلَحَتْ صَلَحَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ وَإِذَا فَسَدَتْ فَسَدَ الْجَسَدُ كُلُّهُ أَلَا وَهِيَ الْقَلْبُ»
✧ «The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are ambiguous matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the ambiguous matters has kept his honor and religion clear. Whoever falls into the ambiguous matters falls into the unlawful, like a shepherd grazing around a sanctuary, soon to trespass into it. Indeed, every king has a sanctuary, and Allah’s sanctuary is His prohibitions. Indeed, in the body there is a lump of flesh; when it is sound, the whole body is sound, and when it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.»

قُلْتُ لِلْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ مَا تَحْفَظُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ لَا أَدْرِي مَا هِيَ؟ فَقَالَ «دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكَ»
✧ I said to al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, “What do you remember from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said, “A man asked him about a matter, and I do not know what it was. He said, ‘Leave what unsettles you for what does not unsettle you.’”
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِوَابِصَةَ «جِئْتَ تَسْأَلُ عَنِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِثْمِ؟» قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَجَمَعَ أَصَابِعَهُ فَضَرَبَ بِهَا صَدْرَهُ وَقَالَ «اسْتَفْتِ نَفْسَكَ اسْتَفْتِ قَلْبَكَ يَا وَابِصَةُ ثَلَاثًا الْبِرُّ مَا اطْمَأَنَّتْ إِلَيْهِ النَّفْسُ وَاطْمَأَنَّ إِلَيْهِ الْقَلْبُ وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي النَّفْسِ وَتَرَدَّدَ فِي الصَّدْرِ وَإِنْ أَفْتَاكَ النَّاسُ وَأَفْتَوْكَ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Wābiṣah, “Have you come to ask about righteousness and sin?” He said, “I said, ‘Yes.’” He said, “Then he gathered his fingers and struck his chest with them, and said, ‘Consult your heart, consult yourself, O Wābiṣah’ — three times — ‘Righteousness is what the soul is at ease with and the heart is at ease with. Sin is what chafes in the soul and wavers in the chest, even if people give you a ruling and they give you a ruling again.’”
كُنْتُ آخِذًا بِزِمَامِ نَاقَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي أَوْسَطِ أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ أَذُودُ النَّاسَ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ «أَلَا إِنَّ كُلَّ رِبًا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ مَوْضُوعٌ أَلَا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ قَضَى أَنَّ أَوَّلَ رِبًا يُوضَعُ رِبَا عَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ لَكُمْ رُءُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُمْ لَا تَظْلِمُونَ وَلَا تُظْلَمُونَ»
✧ I was holding the rein of the camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the middle of the days of Tashrīq, driving the people away from him. He said, «Indeed, every ribā from the pre-Islamic era is abolished. Indeed, Allah has decreed that the first ribā to be abolished is the ribā of ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Yours is your principal capital; you shall not wrong nor be wronged.»

✧ «The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the consumer of ribā and the one who feeds it to others.»

✧ «A time will surely come when a man will not care whether he takes wealth lawfully or unlawfully.»

«إِنَّ أَحَقَّ مَا يَأْكُلُ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ أَطْيَبِ كَسْبِهِ وَإِنَّ وَلَدَهُ مِنْ أَطْيَبِ كَسْبِهِ»
✧ «The most rightful thing a man eats is from his good earnings, and his child is from his good earnings.»

خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ فَقَالَ «يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ» حَتَّى إِذَا اشْرَأَبُّوا قَالَ «التُّجَّارُ يُحْشَرُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فُجَّارًا إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّقَى اللَّهَ وَبَرَّ وَصَدَقَ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to al-Baqi' and said, “O assembly of merchants!” until they craned their necks. He said, “Merchants will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection as wicked sinners, except those who fear Allah, act righteously, and speak truthfully.”
«التَّاجِرُ الصَّدُوقُ الْأَمِينُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ»
✧ “The truthful, trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, and the martyrs.”

«بَايَعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى إِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ وَالنُّصْحِ لِكُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ»
✧ “I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to establish prayer, give zakat, and give sincere counsel to every Muslim.”
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَرَّ بِطَعَامٍ بِسُوقِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَأَعْجَبَهُ حُسْنُهُ فَأَدْخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَدَهُ فِي جَوْفِهِ فَأَخْرَجَ شَيْئًا لَيْسَ كَالظَّاهِرِ فَأَفَّفَ لِصَاحِبِ الطَّعَامِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «لَا غِشَّ بَيْنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ مَنْ غَشَّنَا فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by some food in the market of Madinah and was pleased by its appearance. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ inserted his hand into its interior and brought out something unlike the exterior. He expressed disapproval to the owner of the food, then said, “There is no fraud between Muslims. Whoever defrauds us is not of us.”

لِكُلِّ غَادِرٍ لِوَاءٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يُقَالُ هَذِهِ غَدْرَةُ فُلَانٍ
✧ “Every treacherous person will have a banner on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said: This is the treachery of so-and-so.”

✧ “No one monopolizes except a sinner,” twice.
«الْجَالِبُ مَرْزُوقٌ وَالْمُحْتَكِرُ مَلْعُونٌ»
✧ “The importer is provided for, and the monopolizer is cursed.”

غَلَا السِّعْرُ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ النَّاسُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ غَلَا السِّعْرُ فَسَعِّرْ لَنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْخَالِقُ الْقَابِضُ الْبَاسِطُ الرَّازِقُ الْمُسَعِّرُ وَإِنِّي أَرْجُو أَنْ أَلْقَى رَبِّي وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ يَطْلُبُنِي بِمَظْلِمَةٍ ظَلَمْتُهَا إِيَّاهُ بِدَمٍ وَلَا مَالٍ»
✧ Prices rose during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, so the people said, “O Messenger of Allah, prices have risen, so set prices for us.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Indeed Allah is the Creator, the Withholder, the Expander, the Provider, the Setter of prices. I hope to meet my Lord with none of you seeking recompense from me for an injustice I committed against him in blood or property.”

تَلَقَّتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ رُوحَ رَجُلٍ مِمَّنْ قَبْلَكُمْ فَقَالُوا أَعَمِلْتَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ شَيْئًا؟ فَقَالَ لَا قَالُوا تَذَكَّرْ قَالَ كُنْتُ أُدَايِنُ النَّاسَ فَآمُرُ فِتْيَانِي أَنْ يُنْظِرُوا الْمُعْسِرَ وَيَتَجَاوَزُوا عَنِ الْمُوسِرِ قَالَ قَالَ اللَّهُ تَجَاوَزُوا عَنْهُ
✧ The angels received the soul of a man from among those before you. They said, “Did you do any good?” He said, “No.” They said, “Remember.” He said, “I used to lend to people and would order my young men to give respite to the one in difficulty and to overlook the one who was well-off.” He said, “Allah said: Overlook him.”

«الْبَيِّعَانِ بِالْخِيَارِ مَا لَمْ يَتَفَرَّقَا فَإِنْ صَدَقَا وَبَيَّنَا بُورِكَ لَهُمَا فِي بَيْعِهِمَا وَإِنْ كَذَبَا وَكَتَمَا مُحِقَ بَرَكَةُ بَيْعِهِمَا»
✧ “The two parties to a sale have the option as long as they do not separate. If they are truthful and make things clear, they will be blessed in their sale. If they lie and conceal, the blessing of their sale will be effaced.”
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ مِثْلَهُ
✧ Abu al-Walid narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Qatadah with his chain, the like of it.

«الْبَيِّعَانِ إِذَا اخْتَلَفَا وَالْبَيْعُ قَائِمٌ بِعَيْنِهِ وَلَيْسَ بَيْنَهُمَا بَيِّنَةٌ فَالْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَ الْبَائِعُ أَوْ يَتَرَادَّانِ الْبَيْعَ»
✧ “If the two parties to a sale disagree while the object of sale is still present and there is no evidence between them, then the statement to be accepted is what the seller says, or they may return the sale.”

«لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرِئٍ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ يَبِيعَ عَلَى بَيْعِ أَخِيهِ حَتَّى يَتْرُكَهُ»
✧ It is not lawful for a person who believes in Allah and the Last Day to sell against the sale of his brother until he leaves it.
«عُهْدَةُ الرَّقِيقِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَيَّامٍ»
✧ The guarantee for slaves is three days.

«مَنِ اشْتَرَى شَاةً مُصَرَّاةً أَوْ لَقْحَةً مُصَرَّاةً فَهُوَ بِالْخِيَارِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَإِنْ رَدَّهَا رَدَّ مَعَهَا صَاعًا مِنْ طَعَامٍ لَا سَمْرَاءَ»
✧ Whoever buys a sheep or milch animal that has been left unmilked for a while, he has the option for three days. If he returns it, he must return with it a sa' of food, not wheat.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the sale of fraud (gharar).

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling fruits until their ripeness appears. He forbade both the seller and the buyer.

«مَنْ ابْتَاعَ ثَمَرَةً فَأَصَابَتْهُ جَائِحَةٌ فَلَا يَأْخُذَنَّ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا بِمَ تَأْخُذُ مَالَ أَخِيكَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ؟»
✧ Whoever buys fruit and a calamity strikes it, he must not take anything from him. How can you take your brother's wealth without right?

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted the sale of 'arāyā for dried dates and fresh dates, and did not permit anything else.

✧ Whoever buys food, he must not sell it until he takes possession of it.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade a loan and a sale, and two conditions in a sale, and profit on what is not guaranteed.

«نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ بَيْعِ الْحَيَوَانِ بِالْحَيَوَانِ نَسِيئَةً»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling an animal for an animal on credit.

اسْتَسْلَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَكْرًا فَجَاءَتْ إِبِلٌ مِنْ إِبِلِ الصَّدَقَةِ قَالَ أَبُو رَافِعٍ فَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْضِيَ الرَّجُلَ بَكْرَهُ فَقُلْتُ لَمْ أَجِدْ فِي الْإِبِلِ إِلَّا جَمَلًا خِيَارًا رَبَاعِيًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَعْطِهِ إِيَّاهُ فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ النَّاسِ أَحْسَنُهُمْ قَضَاءً»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ borrowed a young camel. Then camels from the zakat camels came. Abu Rafi' said: He ordered me to repay the man his young camel. I said: I found among the camels only a fine four-year-old camel. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Give it to him, for the best of people are those who are best in repayment.

«لَا تَلَقَّوْا الْجَلَبَ مَنْ تَلَقَّاهُ فَاشْتَرَى مِنْهُ شَيْئًا فَهُوَ بِالْخِيَارِ إِذَا دَخَلَ السُّوقَ»
✧ Do not go out to meet the caravans. Whoever meets them and buys something from them, then when he enters the market, he has the option.

«لَا يَبِيعُ بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَى بَيْعِ بَعْضٍ وَلَا تَلَقَّوْا السِّلَعَ حَتَّى يُهْبَطَ بِهَا الْأَسْوَاقَ وَلَا تَنَاجَشُوا»
✧ None of you should sell against the sale of another. And do not go out to meet the goods until they are brought down to the markets. And do not bid against each other to raise the price.

«نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ ثَمَنِ الْكَلْبِ وَمَهْرِ الْبَغِيِّ وَحُلْوَانِ الْكَاهِنِ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the price of a dog, the earnings of a prostitute, and the payment of a soothsayer.

«لَمَّا نَزَلَتِ الْآيَةُ فِي آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فِي الرِّبَا خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَتَلَاهُنَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ ثُمَّ حَرَّمَ التِّجَارَةَ فِي الْخَمْرِ»
✧ When the verses at the end of Surat al-Baqarah concerning usury were revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and recited them to the people, then he forbade trading in wine.

«لَمَّا نَزَلَتِ الْآيَاتُ مِنْ أَوَاخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَتَلَاهُنَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ ثُمَّ نَهَى عَنِ التِّجَارَةِ فِي الْخَمْرِ»
✧ When the verses from the end of Surat al-Baqarah were revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and recited them to the people, then he forbade trading in wine.

✧ I asked Ibn Abbas about the skins of animals that die naturally. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Its tanning is its purification.

أَعْتَقَ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا عَبْدًا لَهُ عَنْ دُبُرٍ قَالَ «فَدَعَا بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَبَاعَهُ» قَالَ جَابِرٌ وَإِنَّمَا مَاتَ عَامَ أَوَّلَ
✧ A man among us freed a slave of his after his death. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for him and sold him. Jabir said: He only died the previous year.
«إِذَا وَلَدَتْ أَمَةُ الرَّجُلِ مِنْهُ فَهِيَ مُعْتَقَةٌ عَنْ دُبُرٍ مِنْهُ أَوْ بَعْدَهُ»
✧ When a man's slave woman gives birth to a child from him, she becomes free upon his death or after him.

✧ O Allah, bless them in their measuring vessel and bless them in their sa' and their mudd.

كَانَ عِنْدِي مُدُّ تَمْرٍ لِلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَوَجَدْتُ أَطْيَبَ مِنْهُ صَاعًا بِصَاعَيْنِ فَاشْتَرَيْتُ مِنْهُ فَأَتَيْتُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مِنْ أَيْنَ لَكَ هَذَا يَا بِلَالُ؟» قُلْتُ اشْتَرَيْتُ صَاعًا بِصَاعَيْنِ قَالَ «رُدَّهُ وَرُدَّ عَلَيْنَا تَمْرَنَا»
✧ I had a mudd of dates belonging to the Prophet ﷺ, and I found something better than it, a sa' for two sa's, so I bought it and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "Where did you get this, O Bilal?" I said, "I bought a sa' for two sa'." He said, "Return it and give us back our dates."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ أَخَا بَنِي عَدِيٍّ الْأَنْصَارِيَّ فَاسْتَعْمَلَهُ عَلَى خَيْبَرَ فَقَدِمَ بِتَمْرٍ جَنِيبٍ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ يَعْنِي جَيِّدًا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «أَكُلُّ تَمْرِ خَيْبَرَ هَكَذَا؟» قَالَ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا لَنَشْتَرِي الصَّاعَ بِالصَّاعَيْنِ مِنَ الْجَمْعِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا تَفْعَلُوا وَلَكِنْ مِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ أَوْ بِيعُوا هَذَا وَاشْتَرُوا بِثَمَنِهِ مِنْ هَذَا وَكَذَلِكَ الْمِيزَانُ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent the brother of Banu 'Adiyy al-Ansari and appointed him over Khaybar. He came with fine dates. Ibn Maslamah said, meaning good ones. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Is all the dates of Khaybar like this?" He said, "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, we buy a sa' for two sa' of the mixed dates." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not do that; rather like for like, or sell this and buy with its price from this, and likewise the scale."

✧ Gold for gold, hand to hand; silver for silver, hand to hand; dates for dates, hand to hand; wheat for wheat, hand to hand; barley for barley, hand to hand; and there is no excess between them.

✧ Some people during the rule of Mu'awiyah stood up selling vessels of gold and silver for a deferred payment. 'Ubadah b. al-Samit stood up and said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade selling gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, dates for dates, barley for barley, and salt for salt, except like for like, equal for equal. Whoever increases or asks for an increase has engaged in riba."

✧ I used to sell camels at al-Baqi', selling for dinars and taking dirhams, and selling for dirhams and taking dinars—or perhaps he said, I receive—so I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, wait a moment, let me ask you: I sell camels at al-Baqi', selling for dinars and taking dirhams, and selling for dirhams and taking dinars." He said, "There is no harm in taking at the rate of your day as long as you do not part while there is something between you."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while his shield was pawned with a Jewish man for thirty sa' of barley.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah while they were lending in fruits for two and three years. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Lend in fruits with a known measure and a known weight."

جَلَبْتُ أَنَا وَمَخْرَمَةُ الْعَبْدِيُّ بَزًّا مِنَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ إِلَى مَكَّةَ فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَمْشِي فَسَاوَمَنَا بِسَرَاوِيلَ أَوِ اشْتَرَى مِنَّا سَرَاوِيلَ وَثَمَّ وَزَّانٌ يَزِنُ بِالْأَجْرِ فَقَالَ لِلْوَزَّانِ «زِنْ وَأَرْجِحْ» فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَ يَمْشِي قَالُوا هَذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ
✧ Makhramah al-'Abdi and I brought cloth from al-Bahrayn to Makkah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us walking and bargained with us for a pair of trousers, or bought a pair of trousers from us. There was a weigher weighing for a fee, so he said to the weigher, "Weigh and give more." When he left walking, they said, "This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

✧ He demanded repayment of a debt owed to him by Ibn Abi Hadrad in the mosque, and their voices rose until the Prophet ﷺ heard them while he was in his house. He came out to them and called, "O Ka'b!" He said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Reduce your debt," and he gestured to him, meaning by half. He said, "I have done so." He said, "Stand and settle it."

«مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا أَوْ وَضَعَ عَنْهُ أَظَلَّهُ اللَّهُ فِي ظِلِّهِ يَوْمَ لَا ظِلَّ إِلَّا ظِلُّهُ» قَالَ فَبَزَقَ فِي صَحِيفَتِهِ فَقَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَهِيَ لَكَ لِغَرِيمِهِ وَذَكَرَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ مُعْسِرًا»
✧ "Whoever grants respite to one in difficulty or waives it for him, Allah will shade him in His shade on a day when there is no shade but His shade." He said: Then he spat on his document and said, "Go, for it is yours," to his debtor, and he mentioned that he was in difficulty.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a man to offer the funeral prayer over him, and he said, "Pray over your companion, for he owes a debt." Abu Qatadah said, "It is upon me, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "In full settlement?" He said, "In full settlement." So he prayed over him.

✧ "By the One in whose hand is my soul, there is no believer on earth but I am the closest of people to him. So whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, let them call upon me, for I am his patron. And whoever leaves wealth, it belongs to his heirs, whoever they may be."

«إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الدَّائِنِ حَتَّى يُقْضَى دَيْنُهُ مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيمَا يَكْرَهُ اللَّهُ» قَالَ وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ يَقُولُ لِخَازِنِهِ «اذْهَبْ فَخُذْ لِي بِدَيْنٍ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ أَبِيتَ لَيْلَةً إِلَّا وَاللَّهُ مَعِي بَعْدَمَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ»
✧ "Indeed, Allah is with the creditor until his debt is repaid, as long as it is not in something Allah dislikes." He said: Abdullah b. Ja'far used to say to his treasurer, "Go and collect a debt for me, for I dislike spending a night except with Allah with me, after what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

✧ "The hand is responsible for what it takes until it returns it."

أَهْدَى بَعْضُ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِلَيْهِ قَصْعَةً فِيهَا ثَرِيدٌ وَهُوَ فِي بَيْتِ بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ فَضَرَبَتِ الْقَصْعَةَ فَانْكَسَرَتْ فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَأْخُذُ الثَّرِيدَ فَيَرُدُّهُ فِي الصَّحْفَةِ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «كُلُوا غَارَتْ أُمُّكُمْ» ثُمَّ انْتَظَرَ حَتَّى جَاءَتْ قَصْعَةٌ صَحِيحَةٌ فَأَخَذَهَا فَأَعْطَاهَا صَاحِبَةَ الْقَصْعَةِ الْمَكْسُورَةِ قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ «نَقُولُ بِهَذَا»
✧ Some of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ presented him with a dish containing fish while he was in the house of one of his wives. The dish broke and the Prophet ﷺ took a piece of the fish and placed it on a tray, saying, "Eat, your mother's sins have been forgiven." He then waited until a new dish arrived, took it, and gave it to the owner of the broken dish. Abdullah said, "This is what we say about it."

أَنَّ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَجَدَ عَيْبَةً فَأَتَى بِهَا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ عُرِفَتْ فَذَاكَ وَإِلَّا فَهِيَ لَكَ» فَلَمْ تُعْرَفْ فَلَقِيَهُ بِهَا فِي الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ فِي الْمَوْسِمِ فَذَكَرَهَا لَهُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ «هِيَ لَكَ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَرَنَا بِذَلِكَ» قَالَ لَا حَاجَةَ لِي بِهَا فَقَبَضَهَا عُمَرُ فَجَعَلَهَا فِي بَيْتِ الْمَالِ
✧ Sufyan b. Abdullah found a saddlebag and brought it to Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ. He said, "Announce it for a year; if it is recognized, then that is that, otherwise it is yours." It was not recognized, and he met him with it the following year during the season and mentioned it to him. Umar said, "It is yours, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to do that." He said, "I have no need of it." So Umar took possession of it and placed it in the public treasury.

أَنَّهُ عَامَ فُتِحَتْ مَكَّةُ قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَبَسَ عَنْ مَكَّةَ الْفِيلَ وَسَلَّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَلَا وَإِنَّهَا لَمْ تَحِلَّ لِأَحَدٍ قَبْلِي وَلَا تَحِلُّ لِأَحَدٍ بَعْدِي أَلَا وَإِنَّهَا سَاعَتِي هَذِهِ حَرَامٌ لَا يُخْتَلَى خَلَاهَا وَلَا يُعْضَدُ شَجَرُهَا وَلَا تُلْتَقَطُ سَاقِطَتُهَا إِلَّا لِمُنْشِدٍ»
✧ In the year Makkah was conquered, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said, "Indeed, Allah held back the elephant from Makkah and gave authority over its people to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the believers. Verily, it was not lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be lawful for anyone after me. Verily, it is sacred at this very hour of mine; its fresh herbage is not to be cut, its trees are not to be lopped, and its fallen objects are not to be picked up except by one who announces them."

Then a man said, "O Messenger of Allah, lost property that we find?" He said, "Announce it, do not conceal it, and do not hide it. If its owner comes, then hand it over to him; otherwise, it is the property of Allah, which He gives to whomever He wills."

✧ "Whoever seizes the right of a Muslim man by his oath, Allah has made the Fire obligatory for him and forbidden Paradise to him." A man said to him, "Even if it is something insignificant, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Even if it is a stick of arak."

✧ Abdullah b. Sa'id reported to us: Abu Usama narrated to us from al-Walid b. Kathir from Muhammad b. Ka'b b. Malik that he heard his brother Abdullah b. Ka'b b. Malik narrate that Abu Umama al-Harithi narrated to him that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he mentioned something similar.

✧ "There are three whom Allah will not speak to, nor look at, on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify them, and they will have a painful punishment." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, who are they? They have failed and lost." He repeated it. I said, "Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "The one who lets his garment hang below his ankles, the one who reminds others of his favors, and the one who sells his goods by means of a false oath."

أَنَّهُ اسْتَقْطَعَ الْمِلْحَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ الَّذِي يُقَالُ لَهُ مِلْحُ سدِّ ِمَأْرِبَ فَأَقْطَعَهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّ الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ التَّمِيمِيَّ قَالَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَرَدْتُ الْمِلْحَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَهُوَ بِأَرْضٍ لَيْسَ بِهَا مَاءٌ وَمَنْ وَرَدَهُ أَخَذَهُ وَهُوَ مِثْلُ مَاءِ الْعِدِّ فَاسْتَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْأَبْيَضَ فِي قَطِيعَتِهِ فِي الْمِلْحِ فَقُلْتُ قَدْ أَقَلْتُهُ عَلَى أَنْ تَجْعَلَهُ مِنِّي صَدَقَةً فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هُوَ مِنْكَ صَدَقَةٌ وَهُوَ مِثْلُ مَاءِ الْعِدِّ مَنْ وَرَدَهُ أَخَذَهُ» قَالَ وَقَطَعَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْضًا وَنَخْلًا َكَذَا بِالْجَوْفِ جَوْفِ مُرَادٍ مَكَانَهُ حِينَ أَقَالَهُ مِنْهُ قَالَ الْفَرَجُ فَهُوَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ مَنْ وَرَدَهُ أَخَذَهُ
✧ He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to grant him the salt flat called the salt of Ma'rib, and he granted it to him. Then al-Aqra' b. Habis al-Tamimi said, "O Prophet of Allah, I came to the salt spring in the pre-Islamic era, and it is in a land with no water. Whoever comes to it takes from it, and it is like perennial water." So the Prophet ﷺ asked al-Abyad to rescind his grant of the salt flat. I said, "I have rescinded it on the condition that you make it a charity from me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is a charity from you, and it is like perennial water; whoever comes to it takes from it." He said, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him land and palm trees in the Jawf, the Jawf of Murad, in place of it when he rescinded it from him. Al-Faraj said, "So it remains like that; whoever comes to it takes from it."

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَقْطَعَهُ أَرْضًا قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَ مَعِي مُعَاوِيَةَ قَالَ «أَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ»
✧ It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed a piece of land. He said, "Send Muawiyah with me." He said, "Give it to him." Yahya narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Gündar narrated to us about this narration.

دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي حَائِطٍ لِي فَقَالَ «يَا أُمَّ مُبَشِّرٍ أَمُسْلِمٌ غَرَسَ هَذَا أَمْ كَافِرٌ؟» قُلْتُ مُسْلِمٌ فَقَالَ «مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يَغْرِسُ غَرْسًا فَيَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ إِنْسَانٌ أَوْ دَابَّةٌ أَوْ طَيْرٌ إِلَّا كَانَتْ لَهُ صَدَقَةٌ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered my walled garden and said, "O Umm Mubashshir, did a Muslim plant this or a disbeliever?" I said, "A Muslim." He said, "There is no Muslim who plants a plant and a human, animal, or bird eats from it but that it is charity for him."

أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ حِمَى الْأَرَاكِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَا حِمَى فِي الْأَرَاكِ» فَقَالَ أَرَاكَةٌ فِي حِظَارِي؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «لَا حِمَى فِي الْأَرَاكِ» قَالَ فَرَجٌ يَعْنِي أَبْيَضُ بِحِظَارِي الْأَرْضَ الَّتِي فِيهَا الزَّرْعُ الْمُحَاطُ عَلَيْهَا
✧ He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the protected area of arak trees. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no protected area for arak trees." He said, "An arak tree within my enclosure?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "There is no protected area for arak trees." Faraj said, meaning al-Abyad, "Within my enclosure" refers to the land in which crops are grown and which is surrounded.

لَا تَبِيعُوا الْمَاءَ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «يَنْهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الْمَاءِ»
✧ Do not sell water, for I heard the Prophet ﷺ forbidding the sale of water.

أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَاسْتَأْذَنَهُ فَدَخَلَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ قَمِيصِهِ وَقَدْ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ فَالْتَزَمَهُ فَقَالَ مَا الشَّيْءُ الَّذِي لَا يَحِلُّ مَنْعُهُ؟ فَقَالَ «الْمِلْحُ وَالْمَاءُ» قَالَ مَا الشَّيْءُ الَّذِي لَا يَحِلُّ مَنْعُهُ؟ قَالَ «إِنْ تَفْعَلِ الْخَيْرَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ» قَالَ مَا الشَّيْءُ الَّذِي لَا يَحِلُّ مَنْعُهُ؟ قَالَ «إِنْ تَفْعَلِ الْخَيْرَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ» وَانْتَهَى إِلَى الْمِلْحِ وَالْمَاءِ
✧ He came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked his permission, and he entered between him and his shirt. Uthman said: He embraced him and said: What is the thing which it is not lawful to withhold? He said: "Salt and water." He said: What is the thing which it is not lawful to withhold? He said: "If you do good, it is better for you." He said: What is the thing which it is not lawful to withhold? He said: "If you do good, it is better for you." And he ended with salt and water.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ «عَامَلَ خَيْبَرَ بِشَطْرِ مَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْهَا مِنْ ثَمَرَةٍ أَوْ زَرْعٍ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dealt with the people of Khaybar for half of what comes out of it of fruit or crops.

كُنَّا نُخَابِرُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَنْهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ الْخِبْرِ بَسَنَتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثٍ عَلَى الثُّلُثِ وَالشَّطْرِ وَشَيْءٍ مَنْ تِبْنٍ فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَنْ كَانَتْ لَهُ أَرْضٌ فَلْيَحْرُثْهَا فَإِنْ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَحْرُثَهَا فَلْيَمْنَحْهَا أَخَاهُ فَإِنْ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَمْنَحَهَا أَخَاهُ فَلْيَدَعْهَا»
✧ We used to engage in sharecropping for two or three years before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from sharecropping on the basis of one-third, one-half, and something of straw. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us: "Whoever has land should cultivate it; if he dislikes cultivating it, he should give it to his brother; if he dislikes giving it to his brother, he should leave it."

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the sale of barren land for two or three years.
كُنَّا نُكْرِي الْأَرْضَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِمَا عَلَى السَّوَاقِي مِنَ الزَّرْعِ وَبِمَا سَعِدَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ مِنْهَا «فَنَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ ذَلِكَ وَأَذِنَ لَنَا أَوْ قَالَ رَخَّصَ لَنَا فِي أَنْ نُكْرِيَهَا بِالذَّهَبِ وَالْوَرِقِ»
✧ We used to lease land at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what grew on the water channels and for what the water reached of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from that and allowed us—or he said granted us a concession—to lease it for gold and silver.

«إِذَا خَرَصْتُمْ فَخُذُوا وَدَعُوا دَعُوا الثُّلُثَ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَدَعُوا الثُّلُثَ فَدَعُوا الرُّبُعَ»
✧ When you estimate the produce, take it and leave some; leave one-third, and if you do not leave one-third, then leave one-fourth.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the earnings of slave women.

✧ The earnings of a cupper are vile, the dowry of a prostitute is vile, and the price of a dog is vile.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ «حَجَمَهُ أَبُو طَيْبَةَ وَأَمَرَ لَهُ بِصَاعَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ»
✧ The translation of the sentence "أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ «حَجَمَهُ أَبُو طَيْبَةَ وَأَمَرَ لَهُ بِصَاعَيْنِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ»" into English is: "It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Hajj and ordered him to give him two Sa' of food".

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the stud fee of a stallion.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the stud fee of a stallion and the wages of a prostitute.
«مَنْ بَاعَ مِنْكُمْ دَارًا أَوْ عَقَارًا فإنه قَمِنٌ أَنْ لَا يُبَارَكَ لَهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يَجْعَلَهُ فِي مِثْلِهِ»
✧ “Whoever of you sells a house or real estate, it is likely that he will not be blessed in it unless he puts it into something like it.”
«مَنِ احْتَفَرَ بِئْرًا فَلَيْسَ لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ يَحْفِرَ حَوْلَهُ أَرْبَعِينَ ذِرَاعًا عَطَنًا لِمَاشِيَتِهِ»
✧ “Whoever digs a well, no one may dig around it for forty cubits as a watering place for his livestock.”

✧ Regarding preemption when their path is one? He said: “It is to be waited for, even if its owner is absent.”

قَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالشُّفْعَةِ فِي كُلِّ شِرْكٍ لَمْ يُقْسَمْ رَبْعَةٍ أَوْ حَائِطٍ لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ أَنْ يَبِيعَ حَتَّى يُؤْذِنَ شَرِيكَهُ فَإِنْ شَاءَ أَخَذَ وَإِنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَ فَإِنْ بَاعَ وَلَمْ يُؤْذِنْهُ فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهِ قِيلَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ تَقُولُ بِهَذَا؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled in favor of preemption in every unpartitioned share, whether a dwelling or a garden. It is not lawful for him to sell until he notifies his partner. If he wishes, he may take it, and if he wishes, he may leave it. If he sells without notifying him, then he (the partner) has more right to it.” It was said to Abu Muhammad: “Do you hold this opinion?” He said: “Yes.”
