Go and perform ṭawāf around the House and between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah, then come out of iḥrām.” He said: So I performed ṭawāf around the House and between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah, then I came to a woman from the women of Banū Qays, and she began to delouse my head. I began to give fatwā to the people with that. A man said to me: O ‘Abdullāh b. Qays, go slowly with some of your fatwā, for you do not know what the Commander of the Faithful has introduced in the rites after you. So I said: O people, whoever we have given a fatwā to, let him be cautious, for the Commander of the Faithful is coming to you, so follow him. When he arrived, I came to him and mentioned that to him. He said: “If we follow the Book of Allah, the Book of Allah commands completion, and if we follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out of iḥrām until the sacrificial animal reached its place of sacrifice.”

✧ We entered upon Jabir b. Abdullah, and he asked about the people until he came to me. I said: I am Muhammad b. Ali b. al-Husayn b. Ali. He reached with his hand to my upper button and my lower button, then placed his mouth between my breasts, while I was then a young lad. He said: Welcome to you, O son of my brother. Ask whatever you wish. So I asked him while he was blind. Then the prayer time came, and he stood up in a woven cloth, wrapping himself in it. Every time he placed it on his shoulders, its ends came back to him because of its smallness, while his cloak was beside him on the clothes hanger. He prayed. I said: Tell me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He gestured with his hand, counting nine, and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed nine years without performing Hajj. Then it was announced among the people in the tenth year that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was going to perform Hajj. Many people came to Madinah, all seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do as he did. We went out with him until we reached Dhu al-Hulayfah. Asma' bt. Umays gave birth to Muhammad b. Abi Bakr. She sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking: How should I proceed? He said: "Perform ghusl, wrap yourself with a cloth, and enter ihram." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the mosque, then mounted al-Qaswa' until his she-camel stood upright with him on al-Bayda'. I looked as far as my sight could reach: in front of him were riders and walkers; to his right, the same; to his left, the same; and behind him, the same. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us, and the Quran was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. He proclaimed the talbiyah of tawhid: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Inna al-hamda wa al-ni'mata laka wa al-mulk, la sharika lak." The people proclaimed what they were proclaiming, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not rebut anything of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued his talbiyah until we reached the House with him. Jabir said: We intended only Hajj; we did not know Umrah. When we reached the House with him, he touched the corner, performed ramal in three rounds and walked in four. Then he advanced to the station of Ibrahim and prayed. He recited: {And take the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.} [al-Baqarah 125] He placed the station between himself and the House. My father used to say, and I do not know that he mentioned it except from Jabir, from the Prophet ﷺ: He used to recite in the two rak'ahs: Qul huwa Allahu ahad and Qul ya ayyuha al-kafirun. Then he returned to the corner and touched it. Then he went out from the gate to al-Safa. When he reached al-Safa, he recited: {Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the rites of Allah.} [al-Baqarah 158] "I begin with what Allah began with." So he began with al-Safa. He climbed it until he saw the House. He declared the oneness of Allah and magnified Him, and said: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is over all things competent. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." Then he supplicated between that, saying similar words three times. Then he descended toward al-Marwah. When his feet went down into the middle of the valley, Abdullah b. Abd al-Rahman al-Darimi said: i.e., he did ramal. When we ascended, he walked. When we reached al-Marwah, he did on al-Marwah as he did on al-Safa. When he was on the last circuit on al-Marwah, he said: "If I had known before my affair what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal, and I would have made it an Umrah. Whoever of you does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him exit ihram and make it an Umrah." Suraqah b. Malik b. Ju'shum stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, is this for this year of ours or forever? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers and said: "Umrah has entered into Hajj" like this, twice. "No, rather forever and ever. No, rather forever and ever?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers and said: "Umrah has entered into Hajj" like this, twice. "No, rather forever and ever. No, rather forever and ever." Ali arrived with sacrificial camels from Yemen for the Prophet ﷺ. He found Fatimah among those who had exited ihram; she had put on dyed clothes and applied kohl. Ali disapproved of that. She said: My father commanded me. Ali said: I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to incite him against Fatimah for what she had done, seeking a ruling from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what she mentioned. I disapproved of that. He said: "She has spoken the truth. What did you do when you assumed ihram for Hajj?" He said: I said: O Allah, I assume ihram with what Your Messenger assumes ihram. He said: "Indeed, I have the sacrificial animal with me, so do not exit ihram." He said: The total number of sacrificial animals that Ali brought from Yemen and that the Prophet ﷺ brought was one hundred camels. All the people exited ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had sacrificial animals with them. On the day of Tarwiyah, he set out for Mina, and we assumed ihram for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode and prayed with us Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Subh. Then he stayed a little while. When the sun rose, he ordered a dome of hair cloth to be pitched for him at Namirah. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode and traveled. Quraysh had no doubt that he would stand at al-Mash'ar al-Haram, as Quraysh used to do in the Jahiliyyah at Muzdalifah. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled until he reached Arafah. He found the dome had been pitched at Namirah, so he alighted there. When the sun declined, i.e., from its zenith, he ordered al-Qaswa' to be saddled. He came to the bottom of the valley and addressed the people, saying: "Indeed, your blood and your property are sacred, like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Indeed, every matter of the Jahiliyyah is placed under my feet. The blood of the Jahiliyyah is abolished. The first blood I abolish is our blood, the blood of Rabi'ah b. al-Harith, who was being nursed among Banu Sa'd, and Hudhayl killed him. The riba of the Jahiliyyah is abolished. The first riba I abolish is the riba of Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib; it is all abolished. Fear Allah concerning women. You have taken them as a trust of Allah and made their private parts lawful by the word of Allah. You have rights over them: they should not allow anyone you dislike to sit on your beds. If they do that, strike them with a blow that is not severe. They have rights over you: their provision and clothing according to what is reasonable. You will be asked about me, so what will you say?" They said: We bear witness that you have conveyed, fulfilled, and advised. He raised his index finger to the sky and pointed it toward the people, saying: "O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness." Then Bilal called the adhan once and the iqamah, and he prayed Zuhr. Then he called the iqamah and prayed Asr, praying nothing between them. Then he rode until he stood at Arafah. He made the belly of his she-camel al-Qaswa' toward the small rocks. Isma'il said: toward the small trees. He placed the line of pedestrians before him, then faced the qiblah. He remained standing until the sun set and the yellow light disappeared and the disk vanished. He mounted Usamah behind him, then moved on, having pulled the rein of al-Qaswa' so tight that its head touched the padding of his saddle. He said with his right hand: "Calmness, calmness." Whenever he came to a hill, he loosened the rein slightly so it could climb. He continued until he reached Muzdalifah. There he prayed Maghrib and Isha with one adhan and two iqamahs. Then he lay down until dawn. When dawn broke, he prayed Fajr with an adhan and an iqamah. Then he rode al-Qaswa' until he stood at al-Mash'ar al-Haram. He faced the qiblah and supplicated to Allah, magnified Him, declared His oneness, and proclaimed His unity until the light of dawn spread. Then he moved before the sun rose, with al-Fadl b. al-Abbas mounted behind him. Al-Fadl was a handsome man with beautiful white hair. When the Prophet ﷺ moved, he passed by women in howdahs moving quickly. Al-Fadl began to look at them. The Prophet ﷺ took his hand and placed it on al-Fadl's face. Al-Fadl turned his head to the other side. The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand on the other side. When he reached Muhassir, he moved a little quickly. Then he took the middle road that leads you to the largest jamrah. When he reached the jamrah near the tree, he threw seven pebbles, saying Allahu akbar with each pebble, pebbles like those thrown from the fingertips. Then he threw from the bottom of the valley. Then he went to the place of sacrifice and sacrificed sixty-three camels with his own hand. Then he gave to Ali, and Ali sacrificed the rest, and he included him in his sacrificial animals. Then he ordered a piece from each camel to be placed in a pot and cooked. They ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Then he rode and went to the House. He came to the House and prayed Zuhr in Makkah. He came to Banu Abd al-Muttalib while they were drawing water from Zamzam. He said: "Draw water, Banu Abd al-Muttalib. Were it not that people would overpower you in your water-drawing, I would draw with you." They handed him a bucket, and he drank.

✧ Abdullah b. Abdullah and Salim spoke to Ibn Umar during the nights when al-Hajjaj camped against Ibn al-Zubayr, before he was killed. They said: It would not harm you not to perform Hajj this year; we fear that you will be prevented from reaching the House. He said: “We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intending Umrah, but the disbelievers of Quraysh blocked us from the House. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered his sacrificial animal and shaved his head, then returned. I call you to witness that I have made Umrah obligatory upon myself. If I am allowed to reach the House, I will perform tawaf; and if I am prevented from it, I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did when I was with him.” So he entered ihram for Umrah from Dhu al-Hulayfah, then traveled. Then he said: “Their affair is one. I call you to witness that I have made Hajj obligatory along with my Umrah.” Nafi‘ said: He performed a single tawaf for both and a single sa‘y for both. Then he did not exit ihram until the Day of Sacrifice came, and he offered a sacrificial animal. He used to say: Whoever combines Umrah and Hajj and enters ihram for both together must not exit ihram until he exits from both together on the Day of Sacrifice.
Sunan ad-Darimi 1936Sahih

✧ He narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ returned from the Umrah of al-Ji'ranah, he sent Abu Bakr as leader of the Hajj. We set out with him until when we were at al-'Arj, the call for the morning prayer was given. When he stood to say the takbir, he heard the grunting of a camel behind him, so he paused from the takbir and said, "This is the grunting of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ camel al-Jad'a'. It seems that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has changed his mind about the Hajj, so perhaps it is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we may pray with him." But it was 'Ali on it. Abu Bakr said, "Are you a commander or a messenger?" He said, "No, rather a messenger. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with Bara'ah to recite to the people at the stations of Hajj." We arrived at Makkah, and one day before the day of Tarwiyah, Abu Bakr stood and addressed the people, teaching them their rituals. When he had finished, 'Ali stood and recited Bara'ah to the people until he completed it. Then we went out with him until the day of 'Arafah. Abu Bakr stood and addressed the people, teaching them their rituals. When he had finished, 'Ali stood and recited Bara'ah to the people until he completed it. Then on the day of sacrifice we departed. When Abu Bakr returned, he addressed the people, teaching them about their departure, their sacrifice, and their rituals. When he had finished, 'Ali stood and recited Bara'ah to the people until he completed it. On the first day of departure, Abu Bakr stood and addressed the people, telling them how to depart and how to stone, and he taught them their rituals. When he had finished, 'Ali stood and recited Bara'ah to the people until he completed it.
