1. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq
Musnad Ahmad 1Sahih
Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: O people, you recite this verse: ʿO you who believe! Take care of your ownselves. If you follow the (right) guidance (and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no hurt can come to you from those who are in errorʿ (al-Ma'idah 5:105]. We heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿlf the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.ʿ
Musnad Ahmad 2Sahih
✧ When I heard a hadith from the Messenger of God ﷺ, God benefited me with what He willed of it; and when someone other than him narrated it to me, I would ask him to swear an oath, and if he swore to me, I believed him. Indeed Abu Bakr narrated to me—and Abu Bakr spoke the truth—that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "There is no man who commits a sin, then performs wudu and does it well"—Mis'ar said: "and prays," and Sufyan said: "then prays two rak'ahs, then seeks God's forgiveness, Mighty and Majestic is He, except that He forgives him."

✧ We set out and traveled by night, hastening through our day and night until we emerged into the open, and the midday heat stood still. I cast my eyes around to see if I could find a shade to seek shelter in, and there I saw a rock. I made my way to it, and there was a remnant of its shade, so I smoothed it for the Messenger of God ﷺ, spread a fur for him, and said: "Lie down, O Messenger of God." So he lay down. Then I went out to see if I could find anyone from the pursuers. There I saw a shepherd of sheep and said: "To whom do you belong, O boy?" He said: "To a man of Quraysh"—he named him, and I recognized him, and said: "Is there any milk in your sheep?" He said: "Yes." I said: "Will you milk some for me?" He said: "Yes." I ordered him, and he restrained a sheep from among them. Then I ordered him, and he shook the dust from its udder. Then I ordered him, and he shook his hands from the dust. I had a waterskin with a cloth over its mouth, and he milked a portion of milk for me. I poured [i.e., water] onto the bowl until its bottom cooled, then I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and found him awake. I said: "Drink, O Messenger of God." He drank until I was satisfied. Then I said: "Is it time to set out?" He said, so we departed, while the people were seeking us, but none of them caught up with us except Suraqah b. Malik b. Ju'shum on a horse of his. I said: "O Messenger of God, the pursuer has caught up with us." He said: "Do not grieve; God is with us." When he drew near to us and there was between us and him the distance of a spear, or two, or three, I said: "O Messenger of God, this pursuer has caught up with us," and I wept. He said: "Why do you weep?" I said: "By God, I do not weep for myself, but I weep for you." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ supplicated against him and said: "O God, suffice us against him with what You will." So the legs of his horse sank into hard ground up to its belly, and he jumped off it and said: "O Muhammad, I know this is your doing, so ask God to deliver me from what I am in. By God, I will blind those behind me among the pursuers. Here is my quiver; take an arrow from it, for you will pass by my camels and sheep in such-and-such a place, so take what you need from them." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "I have no need of them." He supplicated for him, and he was released, and he returned to his companions. The Messenger of God ﷺ went on, and I was with him until we arrived in Madinah. The people met him, coming out into the road and onto the rooftops. The servants and children in the road shouted: "God is greatest! The Messenger of God ﷺ has come! Muhammad has come!" The people disputed over which one of them he would stay with. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Tonight I will stay with the Banu al-Najjar, the maternal uncles of 'Abd al-Muttalib, to honor them by that." When morning came, he went where he had been commanded. Al-Bara' b. 'Azib said: "The first of the Emigrants who came to us was Mus'ab b. 'Umayr, the brother of the Banu 'Abd al-Dar. Then Ibn Umm Maktum, the blind, the brother of the Banu Fihr, came to us. Then 'Umar b. al-Khattab came to us with twenty riders, and we said: 'What has happened to the Messenger of God ﷺ?' He said: 'He is right behind me.' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ came, and Abu Bakr was with him." Al-Bara' said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ did not come until I had recited some surahs of the Mufassal." Isra'il said: "Al-Bara' was one of the Ansar, from the Banu Harithah." So it is in the edition of the Islamic Treasure Society, and what is in brackets is not present in the edition of the Risalah Foundation. So it is in the edition of the Islamic Treasure Society, and in the edition of the Risalah Foundation: "the departure."

that the Prophet ﷺ sent him with Soorat Bara'ah (at-Taubah) to the people of Makkah, to say that no mushrik should perform Hajj after this year and no one should circumambulate the Ka'bah naked, and no one would enter Paradise except a Muslim, whoever had a covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a specific time, it would last until the stated time, and Allah is free from (all) obligations to the Mushrikoon and so is His Messenger (cf. 9:3). He went around doing that for three days, then [the Prophet ﷺ said to ‘Ali; “Go and catch up with him; send Abu Bakr back to me and you convey it.” So he did that. And when Abu Bakr carme to the Prophet ﷺ, he wept and said: O Messenger of Allah, is there something the matter with me? He said: ʿThere is nothing but good, but I was instructed that no one should convey it except me or a man from my family.”

Abu Bakr addressed us and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood last year where I am standing. Abu Bakr wept, then he said: Ask Allah to keep you safe and sound, for no one is given anything better, after certainly of faith, than well-being. And you should be truthful, for that goes with righteousness and they lead to Paradise. And beware of lying, for that goes with immorality and they lead to Hell. Do not envy one another, do not bear grudges against one another, do not sever ties with one another, do not turn away from one another; be brothers as Allah has commanded you.”

✧ Yes, I was shown what will be of the affairs of this world and the affairs of the Hereafter. The first and the last were gathered on a single plain, and the people were terrified by that, so they went to Adam ﷺ, while the sweat nearly bridled them. They said: O Adam, you are the father of humankind, and God, Mighty and Majestic, chose you; intercede for us with your Lord. He said: I have met the like of what you have met. Go to your father after your father, to Noah, for God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of Imran above the worlds. He said: So they go to Noah ﷺ and say: Intercede for us with your Lord, for God chose you and answered your supplication and did not leave on the earth any of the disbelievers. He says: That is not with me. Go to Abraham ﷺ, for God, Mighty and Majestic, took him as a close friend. So they go to Abraham, and he says: That is not with me. But go to Moses ﷺ, for God, Mighty and Majestic, spoke to him directly. Moses ﷺ says: That is not with me. But go to Jesus son of Mary, for he heals the blind and the leper and gives life to the dead [by God's permission]. Jesus ﷺ says: That is not with me. But go to the master of the children of Adam, for he is the first from whom the earth will split open on the Day of Resurrection. Go to Muhammad ﷺ, and he will intercede for you with your Lord, Mighty and Majestic. He said: So he goes, and Gabriel ﷺ comes to his Lord, and God, Mighty and Majestic, says: Give him permission and give him glad tidings of Paradise. He said: Then Gabriel goes with him, and he falls prostrate for the length of a week, and God, Mighty and Majestic, says: Raise your head, O Muhammad, and speak, you will be heard; and intercede, your intercession will be accepted. He said: So he raises his head, and when he looks at his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, he falls prostrate for the length of another week. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, says: Raise your head, and speak, you will be heard; and intercede, your intercession will be accepted. He said: Then he goes to fall prostrate, and Gabriel ﷺ takes him by his upper arms, and God, Mighty and Majestic, opens for him of supplication something He has never opened for any human. Then he says: O Lord, You created me the master of the children of Adam, and no pride, and the first from whom the earth will split open on the Day of Resurrection, and no pride, until the cistern will come to me with more than what is between Sana'a and Aylah. Then it is said: Call the truthful ones, and they intercede. Then it is said: Call the prophets. He said: Then the prophet comes with a small band, and the prophet comes with five or six, and the prophet comes with no one. Then it is said: Call the martyrs, and they intercede for whomever they wish. He said: When the martyrs have done that, God, Mighty and Majestic, says: I am the Most Merciful of the merciful. Admit into My Paradise those who did not associate anything with Me. He said: Then they enter Paradise. He said: Then God, Mighty and Majestic, says: Look in the Fire: do you find anyone who ever did any good? He said: So they find a man in the Fire, and He says to him: Did you ever do any good? He says: No, except that I used to be lenient with people in buying [and selling]. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, says: Be lenient with My servant as he was lenient with My servants. Then they bring out from the Fire a man, and He says to him: Did you ever do any good? He says: No, except that I commanded my children when I die to burn me with fire, then grind me until I am like kohl, then take me to the sea and scatter me in the wind. By God, the Lord of the worlds will never be able to overpower me. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, says to him: Why did you do that? He says: From fear of You. He said: Then God, Mighty and Majestic, says: Look at the dominion of the greatest king, for you will have the like of it and ten times its like. He said: Then he says: Why do You mock me when You are the King? He said: And that is what I laughed about until the forenoon. ✧ Qays narrated to us, he said: Abu Bakr stood, praised God Almighty and extolled Him, then said: O people, you recite this verse: {O you who believe, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves; those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided} [Al-Ma'idah 105] to the end of the verse, and you place it in other than its proper place. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: When people see wrong and do not change it, God will soon envelop them in His punishment. He said: And I heard Abu Bakr say: O people, beware of lying, for lying is incompatible with faith.

✧ He heard him when the Messenger of God ﷺ passed away. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ stood in this place of mine last year, then he wept, then he said: You must be truthful, for it is with righteousness, and both are in Paradise. Beware of lying, for it is with wickedness, and both are in the Fire. Ask God for pardon and well-being, for no man has been given after certainty anything better than well-being. Then he said: Do not sever relations, do not turn your backs on one another, do not hate one another, do not envy one another, and be, O servants of God, brothers.

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ passed away while Abu Bakr was in a part of the city. He said: Then he came, uncovered his face, kissed him, and said: May my father and mother be your ransom, how good you are alive and dead. Muhammad ﷺ has died, by the Lord of the Ka'bah... Then he mentioned the hadith. He said: Then Abu Bakr and Umar went walking together, leaning on each other, until they came to them. Abu Bakr spoke and did not leave anything that was revealed about the Ansar or that the Messenger of God ﷺ mentioned of their affair but that he mentioned it and said: You know that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: If the people were to take one valley and the Ansar another valley, I would take the valley of the Ansar. And you know, O Sa'd, that the Messenger of God ﷺ said while you were sitting: Quraysh are the guardians of this affair, the righteous of the people follow their righteous, and the wicked of them follow their wicked. He said: Then Sa'd said to him: You have spoken truthfully; we are the ministers and you are the commanders.

✧ I said to the Messenger of God ﷺ: O Messenger of God, do we act upon what has been already decreed or upon a matter newly begun? He said: Rather upon a matter already decreed. ✧ Some men among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, when the Prophet ﷺ passed away, grieved over him so much that some of them nearly had satanic whisperings. Uthman said: I was among them. While I was sitting in the shade of a fortress among the fortresses, Umar passed by me and greeted me, but I did not notice that he passed or greeted. Umar went on until he entered upon Abu Bakr and said to him: What surprises you? I passed by Uthman and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting. He and Abu Bakr came, while Abu Bakr was in authority, until they both greeted me. Then Abu Bakr said: Your brother Umar came to me and mentioned that he passed by you and greeted you, but you did not return his greeting. What made you do that? He said: I said: I did not do it. Umar said: Indeed, by Allah, you did, but it was your arrogance, O Banu Umayyah. He said: I said: By Allah, I did not notice that you passed by me or greeted. Abu Bakr said: Uthman spoke the truth, and something must have distracted you from that. I said: Yes. He said: What is it? Uthman said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, took His Prophet ﷺ before we could ask him about the salvation of this matter. Abu Bakr said: I asked him about that. He said: I stood up to him and said to him: May my father and mother be your ransom, you are more deserving of it. Abu Bakr said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the salvation of this matter? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever accepts from me the word which I presented to my uncle, but he rejected it, then it is salvation for him.

✧ Abu Bakr said when he sent me to Syria: O Yazid, you have relatives whom you may favor with leadership, and that is the greatest thing I fear for you. For the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever is given authority over any affair of the Muslims and appoints someone over them out of favoritism, upon him is the curse of Allah. Allah will not accept from him any exchange nor justice until He admits him into Hell. Fatimah the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq, asking for her inheritance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, of the faiʿ that Allah had granted to him in Madinah and Fadak, and what was left of the khurnus of Khaibar, Abu Bakr said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿWe (Prophets) are not to be inherited from and whatever we leave behind is charity. Rather the family of Muhammad may take their provision from this wealth.ʿ By Allah, I will not change any of the charity of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from how it was at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I will do the same with it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. So Abu Bakr refused to give anything of it to Fatimah, and Fatimah was upset with Abu Bakr because of that. Abu Bakr said; By the One in Whose hand is my soul, the relatives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are dearer to me than my own relatives. As for the dispute between me and you concerning this wealth, I did not deviate from the truth concerning them and I will not leave anything that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do but I will do it the way he did it.

When we dispersed, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq sent for me afterwards and said: O Abu Barzah, what did you say? He said: I had forgotten what I said. I said: Remind me.
✧ When it was revealed: 'It is not by your wishes or the wishes of the People of the Book. Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it,' he said: Abu Bakr said: O Messenger of Allah, will we be recompensed for every evil we do? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: May Allah have mercy on you, O Abu Bakr. Do you not become weary? Do you not grieve? Do you not suffer hardship? This is what you are recompensed with.

✧ Abu Bakr wrote to them: These are the obligatory alms that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ imposed upon the Muslims, which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded His Messenger ﷺ. Whoever is asked for them from the Muslims in their proper manner should give them, and whoever is asked beyond that should not give it. For less than twenty-five camels, in every five camels: one sheep. When they reach twenty-five, a bint makhad is due up to thirty-five. If there is no bint makhad, then a male ibn labun. When they reach thirty-six, a bint labun is due up to forty-five. When they reach forty-six, a hiqqah that can be mounted by the stallion is due up to sixty. When they reach sixty-one, a jadha'ah is due up to seventy-five. When they reach seventy-six, two bint labun are due up to ninety. When they reach ninety-one, two hiqqahs that can be mounted by the stallion are due up to one hundred and twenty. If they exceed one hundred and twenty, then in every forty a bint labun, and in every fifty a hiqqah. When the ages of camels differ in the obligatory alms, whoever has reached the alms of a jadha'ah but does not have a jadha'ah and has a hiqqah, it is accepted from him, and he adds with it two sheep if they are easy for him, or twenty dirhams. Whoever has reached the alms of a hiqqah but only has a jadha'ah, it is accepted from him, and the collector gives him twenty dirhams or two sheep. Whoever has reached the alms of a hiqqah but does not have it and has a bint labun, it is accepted from him, and he adds with it two sheep if they are easy for him, or twenty dirhams. Whoever has reached the alms of a bint labun but only has a hiqqah, it is accepted from him, and the collector gives him twenty dirhams or two sheep. Whoever has reached the alms of a bint labun but does not have a bint labun and has a bint makhad, it is accepted from him, and he adds with it two sheep if they are easy for him, or twenty dirhams. Whoever has reached the alms of a bint makhad but only has a male ibn labun, it is accepted from him and nothing is with it. Whoever has only four camels, there is nothing due on them unless their owner wishes. In the alms of sheep, in their grazing flocks, when they are forty, one sheep is due up to one hundred and twenty. If they increase, two sheep are due up to two hundred. If they increase by one, three sheep are due up to three hundred. If they increase further, in every hundred one sheep. In alms, an old ewe, a defective one, or a billy goat is not taken unless the giver wishes. Separate flocks are not combined, nor is a combined flock separated for fear of alms. Whatever belongs to two partners, they settle between themselves equally. If a man's grazing flock is one less than forty sheep, there is nothing due unless their owner wishes. In silver, a quarter of a tenth. If the wealth is only one hundred and ninety dirhams, there is nothing due unless its owner wishes.

Affan and offered Hafsah to him. I said: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah. He said: I will consider it. I waited for some nights, and then he met me and said: I do not want to marry today. I think you should order the collection of the Quran. I said to Umar: How can I do something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do? He said: By Allah, it is good. He kept urging me until Allah opened my chest to it, and I saw in it what Umar saw. Zayd said: Umar was sitting with him, not speaking. I was sitting with Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq, the successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, one month after the death of the Prophet ﷺ and he was telling a story, then the call went out among the people, ʿAs-salatu jami'ah (prayer is about to begin),ʿ and it was the first time that this call of ʿas-salatu jami'ahʿ went out to the people. The people gathered and he ascended the minbar, which was something that was made for him to deliver speeches, and it was the first speech he gave in Islam. He praised and glorified Allah, then he said: O People, I wish that someone else could have taken care of this for me, for if you compare my way to the way of your Prophet ﷺ, I cannot be like him, for he was protected from the shaitan and the revelation used to come to him from heaven.

✧ Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed me to say when I enter the morning, when I enter the evening, and when I lie down at night: O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, You are the Lord of everything and its Owner. I bear witness that there is no god but You alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own soul, from the evil of Satan and his trap, and from committing any wrong against myself or bringing it upon a Muslim.
