✧ Hafsah bint Umar became widowed from Khunays b. Hudhafah (or Hudhayfah - Abd al-Razzaq was unsure), who was one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and had been present at Badr, and he died in Madinah. He said: I met Uthman b. Affan and offered Hafsah to him. I said: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah. He said: I will consider it. I waited for some nights, and then he met me and said: I do not want to marry today. Umar said: I met Abu Bakr and said: If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint Umar. He did not reply to me at all, and I was more upset with him than with Uthman. I waited for some nights, and then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her, and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said: Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered Hafsah to me and I did not reply to you. He said: I said: Yes. He said: Nothing prevented me from replying to you when you offered her to me except that I had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention her, and I would not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If he had left her, I would have married her.
